The sky was almost painfully blue. Claire was dressed in a black skirt-suit, unusual as that look was for her, and ignored everyone's glances. Bucky had decided to come, finally, to bid goodbye to someone who was his friend, too. Once upon a time.

Steve, as one might expect, was a mess.

Tony, invited because he was Howard's son, no doubt, was the only other Avenger to come with them to Peggy's funeral. She had become well over ninety, in the end, though she'd assured Claire last time she saw her, how she had no ambition to go for a hundred.

Steve had gone to see her twice a week right up until that morning when she'd been found in her bed, having died utterly peacefully in her sleep.

Peggy had left him a large box of old letters and photographs she'd kept since the war - all things she assumed he and Bucky would cherish more than anyone who was not alive at the time and regarded it as pure history.

He left red and white roses at her casket, Bucky clinging to his arm as much as he clung to his, untilt the two of them retreated to their spot in the church. It was much later, at the newly covered grave, that Claire stole a moment and spoke to the stone that was already in place, as Peggy had seen everything sorted herself before she left this world behind.

"Thank you for taking my advice, all those years ago," Claire told the worldly remnants of the old woman her friend had once loved so dearly. "He needed to get to say goodbye, especially to you. Thank you for being part of our lives."

And she went home, to her own family, which would always include the two supersoldiers.
