Entry 73
I have an idea on how to control Toothless' tail. I have no clue if it'll work, but here's the gist: I'm going to take a strip of leather left over from the saddle, tie it to the tailfin, and try to pull on it while we're flying. Hopefully this will give me enough control to keep him in the air. I'll update once it's done.
…
That definitely did NOT work. First off, it was so awkward sitting on the saddle. I've never ridden any animals before, and it was really nerve wracking, feeling all his muscles shifting underneath me. We barely made it into the air, when I felt the tail lose its position. I yanked on the leather, but all that did was pull the tail straight up, sending Toothless into a sudden turn. I flew off the saddle, landing in the lake, and he did too a moment later.
So, now, that's my first order of business. I need something to keep us attached while flying. I took the saddle off, and now it's here at the forge, waiting for modifications. I think I'm going to add a hook to it, to connect a tether onto my belt. That way, no matter how the tail controlling goes, at least I'm not going to fly off him again.
Gobber will be leaving soon. Once he does, I'm going to make those changes real quick. But even with that taken care of, I still need a new strategy for the actual tail. Pulling on it the way I did wasn't successful… I'd prefer to use my feet. Maybe tomorrow, I'll try tying the leather strip to my foot and pulling it that way. Or maybe instead of leather, I could switch it for some rope… yeah, I like that more. Rope is more sturdy, anyway.
Somehow though… I feel like this isn't going to work either. I feel like I need to be thinking bigger, more elaborately… Whatever the outcome, I'm going to give it a try anyway. And if it doesn't work… then I'll really get thinking.
Until next time…
