Chapter 77

Tris' POV

"Are you nervous?" Zeke asks, glancing back at me through his rearview mirror. Ever since we left Dauntless no more than ten minutes ago, I have been practicing deep and calming breaths that my mother taught me long ago. It's very odd not knowing where my wedding is taking place today or what it will look like. Tobias wasn't kidding when he told me that he would take care of all of the arrangements.

The only thing that was left for me to do for the wedding was for me to choose my wedding gown, along with choosing Christina's and Shauna's bridesmaid's dresses. It was a no brainer as to who I would choose as my bridesmaids. In truth, I wouldn't have it any other way. Shauna and Christina made it quite easy to find their dresses, it probably helped that I don't know that much about fashion in the first place to really care. Although when I saw the dresses that they picked, I knew they were the ones. Their dresses are cut slightly differently, but both are the same dark shade of grey. My dress, although white and made with lace accents, is simple with a grey and black sash that is tied together at my lower back. I loved that it has two colored ribbons, both of them matching our past and now our future.

"Just a little bit," I answer Zeke. I place my hand on my stomach, wishing for the butterflies that are flying around in there to settle down.

I wonder if half of my nerves are due to the fact that I don't know exactly what I am about to walk into. In Abnegation after a suitable amount of courting, the man would typically ask the girl's father for his blessing to marry his daughter. If approved, every member of the family, including their dependents would attend the ceremony. Which is a pretty simple ceremony where each of them then vows to render themselves to the other for life. It usually ends with the woman washing her new groom's feet. The reception is usually held at the newlywed's new home where everyone cooks them a meal for their first night as a married couple. After dinner all of the women in the faction help out by cleaning up, while the men help with any heavy lifting that needs to be done in the home. I've yet to hear about the Dauntless traditions other than what Christina has told me. Although she told me not to pay close attention to them, as Tobias has decided to go in a different direction for us. Umm, whatever that means.

Late last night before Tobias left me to spend the night at Zeke's, he did clue me in on one small detail, the transportation. He made it clear to me that Zeke would pick me up around 6:30 this evening and to make sure that I was ready by then. He told me that if all ends well we will be getting married right at sunset. He even had Zeke black out the windows of one of the Dauntless cars so I wouldn't be able to see where we were going. That man of mine sure thought of everything.

"What makes you more nervous… the whole not knowing what to expect, or the whole you're about to give your life away to someone thing" Zeke asks, while laughing towards the end. Although there are marriages in Dauntless, many of them also don't believe in the notion of legally giving themselves to someone for the rest of their lives Although Shauna did tell me that she and Zeke have spoken about marriage quite often lately than they ever did before. I would imagine that they will eventually tie the knot too.

"A little bit of both, I guess," I simply say. Even though I can't look outside as the city passes, I stare at the blackened windows anyway.

The car comes to a stop, as Zeke says we are here. The door opens on cue, revealing the most gorgeous colorful sunset. I am in complete awe as I see the person before me holding the car door, my father. He did come to my wedding after all. He smiles while holding out his hand for me to take, I don't hesitate at all to place my hand in his as I make my way out of the car. It's not until I stand, that I take it all in and the tears begin to fall down my face.

I look down noticing that there are rose petals at my feet that go all the way up towards the aisle and end at the trunk of our old secret tree. Our closest friends and loved ones stand there smiling at me on either side of the rose petal covered aisle. Standing at our special tree is Tobias, my husband to be, who is smiling and in complete awe of me. Zeke stands right next Tobias, with one hand on his shoulder. Our daughter is standing in front of him, while holding on to his hand. She has never looked so lovely, as she stands there smiling in her white lace princess style dress. Tears roll down my cheeks, taking everything in. I then look up, although the magnificent sunset is all the light we need… I see mason jars that have lit candles in them hanging from the large branches of our special tree above us. It's gorgeous, simple, it's just us… are all the words that come to my mind.

"Shall we get this show on the road?" My father asks. He stands before me holding his arm out for me to take. I loop my arm around the silk grey fabric of my father's suit that only Abnegations wear for special occasions. It's when I see my mother on the other side of me doing the same thing that I start to cry, as I recognize the Abnegation tradition of both the mother and father giving their daughter away. I bite my lower lip to keep my emotions at bay, as my mother leans in kissing my cheek and then my father does the same. We begin to slowly step forward towards my waiting husband-to-be and my precious daughter. When we are just a few feet away, my mother is the first one to tell me how proud she is of me before she leans in and kisses my cheek one last time. My father then turns to give me a kiss on the cheek telling me that, "I will always be his little girl." He then takes my hand and places it into Tobias' waiting hand. He pats Tobias on the back, before wishing us all of the best that this world has to offer us. Tobias guides me up to the final steps to where Mathew Rivers, a Candor judge, stands. All of our friends and family close in around us in a circle with big smiles on their faces and filled with love and happy thoughts.

The ceremony wasn't too long. Tobias and I agreed a long time ago that it would be best to keep it short, sweet and right to the point, but that doesn't mean it meant any less to either one of us. We also agreed that the ceremony should also represent who we both are today and who we were in the past… Abnegation and Dauntless. I was really taken aback when Tobias spoke his vows during the ceremony. I'm used to Tobias being my Tobias when we are alone together, but never in a million years have I ever seen him be his true self in front of others. I'm sure many of our friends and family here shared the same shock that I did today…

"Good evening everyone!" Mathew Rivers begins. "It was long ago that this place was a safe haven for two rebellious children from Abnegation. They first began as friends who loved and supported each other. That soon turned into an unbreakable bond that turned into love and complete devotion. This place has been a witness to their laughter, through all of their tears and their many hardships. It is now that they ask for you to join them at this special place in taking ourselves out of the usual routines of our daily living to witness a unique moment in the lives of Tobias and Beatrice. Today they will join their lives in the union of marriage."

"Marriage is a commitment in life where two people can find and bring out the very best in each other. It offers opportunities for sharing and growth that no other human relationship can equal, a physical and emotional joining that has the promise of a lifetime."

"Let us bow our heads in prayer. Lord, we thank you for gathering everyone here today. We ask that you help Tobias and Beatrice to remember the strong love that they share. To work that love into practical things so that nothing can divide them. May their love always inspire them to be kind in their words, considerate of the other's feelings and concerned for the other's needs and wishes. Let them increase their faith and trust in you. Bless their marriage with peace and happiness and make their love fruitful for your glory and their joy, both here and in eternity. Amen.

While the commitment begins with the two of you, its effect radiates outward. It touches your family and friends and ultimately all of society. When this commitment is seriously made and continuously fulfilled, it leads to the richest and most rewarding of human relationships.

Your relationship will take more than love, it will take trust to know in your hearts that you want only the best for each other. Dedication to stay open to one another, to learn and grow even when it is difficult to do so and faith to go forward together without knowing what the future holds for you both."

"While love is our natural state of being, these other qualities are not as easy to come by. They are not a destination, but a journey. Marriage is a give and take between two personalities, a mingling of two endowments which diminishes neither, but enhances both."

"Seeing that no moment is without meaning, we ask that you take this marriage as a beginning of your lives together. Today signifies the creation of a new home and a new family for you both. May you be fulfilled by each other's love and friendship. May you be overjoyed by the promises you are about to make and the life together you will create."

"Remember that in every marriage there are good times and bad, times of joy and times of sorrow. Marriage is a journey... a time of adventure and excitement enhanced by the love, trust, dedication and faith that you share in one another."

"May the promises you make to one another today, be lived out to the end of your lives. Tomorrow can bring you the greatest of joys, but today is the day it all begins.

Tobias and Beatrice, do you with your family and friends as your witnesses, present yourselves willingly and of your own accord to be joined in marriage?"

"We do," Tobias and I both say without hesitation.

"Will you promise to care for each other in the joys and sorrows of life, come what may and to share the responsibility for growth and enrichment of your life together?" Mathew asks.

"We will," we both say in unison once again. I feel Tobias' hand squeeze mine ever so slightly at our words. It's not until I feel Tobias reach up and wipe my tears away that I notice that I have tears running down my face. I look up seeing that Tobias has a battle of his own, as he too fights off the moisture in his eyes.

"At this time Tobias and Beatrice would like to share their vows that they have both written to each other. Tobias," Mathew says, gesturing towards my groom. Tobias takes a deep breath trying to get a handle on his emotions, as I do the same. Our friends that are standing beside us all smile and chuckle as they too are feeling the overwhelming emotions that are running between us.

"Beatrice…Bea...Tris..." he says, with a sudden burst of laughter as he says all of the names that have ever slipped from his mouth. "Tonight we stand here in the very spot that we had so many stolen moments together as kids. You were first my friend and then you became my best friend… and then the love of my life. It felt like yesterday that we stood where we are standing right now as children... playing, climbing and laughing. We shared the most joyous and the most painful events here," he continues. "You've taught me how to be selfless, how to be brave and most importantly how to love. Even at such a young age I knew I needed you in my life, for you to be mine and for me to be yours. You've given me more than I could ever ask for." He takes another deep breath, smiling down at me with tears in his eyes as he continues. "So here I stand at our special place as I make this promise to you… "I, Tobias Eaton, take you Beatrice Prior to be my wife. I give to you in the presence of these witnesses my promise to stay by your side in sickness and in health, in joy and in sorrow, as well as through the good times and the bad. I promise to love you without reservations, comfort you in times of distress. Encourage you to achieve all of your goals, laugh with you and cry with you, grow with you in mind and spirit. Always be open and honest with you and cherish you for as long as we both shall live," he says, as his emotions continue to threaten to get the better of him. I mouth the words "I love you to him."

"At this time Beatrice would like to share her vows for Tobias. Beatrice," Mathew says, looking down upon me. I take a deep cleansing breath before I begin to speak.

"Tobias…Four..." I say, matching what he said to me at the beginning of his vows as I attempt to break the ice. All of our friends and family laugh, as I laugh along with them. "Since we were little kids I knew I was in love with you. I want nothing more than to make you happy, to love you and only you. I, Beatrice Prior, take you Tobias Eaton to be my husband. To build our dreams together, to support you through times of trouble and rejoice with you in times of happiness. I promise to give you respect, love and loyalty. This commitment is made in love, kept in faith, lived in hope and made new with every day of our lives," I say, as more tears run down my face. Christina nudges my back while handing me a handkerchief, as we all laugh once again in the moment.

"Your wedding rings are the outward and visible sign of the inward and invisible bond which already unites your two hearts in love." While Mathew speaks, Tobias turns towards Zeke who gracefully hands him my wedding band. He cradles the ring at my finger, as Mathew asks Tobias to repeat after him.

"I give you this ring. Wear it with love and joy. As this ring has no end, my love for you is also forever." He slides the ring in place on my finger as he finishes his words. I realize this is it, this is finally it, we will finally be one.

I turn towards Shauna who hands me what will now be Tobias' wedding band. I turn back, cradling the ring towards Tobias' finger. As I too say the words, before slipping the white gold band on his finger.

"I give you this ring. Wear it with love and joy. As this ring has no end, my love for you is also forever. May the wedding rings that you have exchanged today remind you always that you are surrounded by enduring love," Mathew says, while I slip the ring on Tobias' finger. I squeeze his hand gently, while again thinking that this is it.

"Tobias and Beatrice, may your life together be blessed with prosperity and good health. May you always share open and honest communication between each other. May you respect each other's individual talents and gifts and give full support to each other's professional and personal pursuits. May you cherish the home and family that you will create together. May all the years to come, be filled with moments to celebrate and renew your love. May your love be a life-long source of excitement, contentment, affection, respect, and devotion for one another," Mathew says smiling. as he glances between Tobias and I.

"Now by the power vested in me by the city of Chicago, it is my honor and delight to declare you husband and wife. Tobias you may kiss your bride."

Tobias wastes no time at all as he pulls me into him by the hand that he is holding. Leaning in, he kisses me without any hesitation. Our lips meet with tenderness, love, and passion, forgetting about everyone that is with us at this special moment.

"I am pleased to present the newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. Eaton!" Mathew says, not bothering to wait for Tobias and I to finally break apart from our first kiss as man and wife. Tobias and I finally break away from each other when arms encircle each one of us, tearing us apart as laughter and cheers break through.

I was surprised to see the tables and chairs all lined up behind our special tree. Once we took turns hugging and laughing with everyone, Tobias walked all of us around our large tree that was blocking the view of what would be our reception. It's the simplest, most elegant, gorgeous thing I have ever seen. I'm so touched by all of the hard work that my now husband has put into all of this. The tables are decorated with simple, crisp white linens with a touch of color and sparkle from the red rose petals and a large mason jar with a candle inside of it in the center of each table. They go absolutely perfect with the smaller mason jar candles that are hanging from all of the tree branches that light up the space. Tobias explained to me that he felt it was only right that our beginning as well as our future be represented, so he took my most favorite Abnegation meal and infused it with some of our favorite food from Dauntless. He also had a large Dauntless two tier chocolate cake made for this special occasion. It has a grey tone icing on the first tier of the cake and black icing on the second tier. I love the cake topper that sits in the center of the cake so much, it has a man and a woman embraced in each other's arms, with their hands joined together and flames surrounding them both. We spend the night away laughing, eating and enjoying those that Tobias and I cherish most in this world. I was even able to get Tobias to dance with Sara and I. I held my little girl in my arms, as Tobias held us both against his chest while we slowly swayed back and forth to the beat of the soft music. I couldn't have asked for a better wedding than what Tobias had planned for us. Finally after all of our struggles, heartache and loss, we are now husband and wife and no one can ever come between us again.
