Entry 78
Today was almost a disaster.
In Training, I used the light trick Toothless loved on a Terrible Terror, leading it right back to its cage. Like always, I got a few bewildered stares, but it seems like Astrid is REALLY losing her patience. When I left to get the rest of my supplies for Toothless, she stormed off as well. Had I known where she was going, I would have taken a different way to the Cove, but I'm no clairvoyant. As I was walking through the woods, I began to hear yelling in the distance and the sound of an axe cutting into wood. The closer I got, I recognized Astrid's voice… So I tried to sneak by as silently as possible. Unfortunately, luck was not on my side (then again, when is it?) and she was soon staring right at me. I froze for a moment, since I was holding a very suspicious basket and all, before quickly cutting around the corner. I heard her footsteps following mine, and I ducked behind a rock just in time, hearing a frustrated grunt come from her direction. Cautiously, I made the rest of the trip to the Cove, checking over my shoulder every few seconds.
When I got to Toothless, he was eyeing me suspiciously. He must have picked up on my apprehension, but I didn't feel like trying to explain. So, I just dumped his fish, and he seemed to forget it pretty quickly.
Putting together his saddle rigging was easier than I expected. Here's a basic gist: on the left side, the rope attaches to the lowest rib on the tailfin, running between his left main and secondary wings, and to the back of the stirrup. Another rope follows the same path, but attaches to the front of the stirrup. On the right side, the rope attaches to the top of the tailfin, running between his right wings and to the back of the stirrup. Same deal here with the second rope on this side as the other. Then, I tied the ropes together at the base of his secondary wings, just to keep them from shifting too much around his tail. I think it all looks good, and now all that's left is to test it! Once Toothless is done eating, I'm going to take him to the cliffs by the "Dragon Nip Fields", as I've named them. I noticed a rather powerful updraft there, and I think it would be the perfect spot to try out the controls.
I just hope it all works… I really, really want to make it up to Toothless, to let him fly again. I don't know if I could live with myself if he was entirely flightless because of my ignorance.
Isn't it crazy how much a person's views can change in a matter of weeks?
Until next time…
