Nessie's POV

I am pulled over twice on my way to La Push. The first time I am able to charm my way into a warning. The second time the officer was a woman. I didn't know that Leah and Kalen had moved. When I dropped by their old house there was a new family there. So I headed to the Clearwater house, Seth agreed to drive ahead of me so that I wouldn't lose my way. I feel horrible. The same day I decide to leave everything behind and assume that my son no longer needs me is the same day that he ends up in the hospital. Kat rides with me.

"Thought Chuck was my friend. Can't believe he didn't tell me that him and Leah moved," I say to Kat.

"Mm, you haven't been around a lot," Kat replies.

I nod. It's true. Kat and I mostly have a texting relationship these days. "I know."

"How's my dear brother?" Kat asks with a smirk.

Seth turns down the road leading to the beach. I follow. "He's um… you know how he is."

"I know how he is… I heard that he is how he is with you recently," Kat chuckles.

"Ew," I reply, "I get the twin thing but it creepy that he tells you about his sex life."

"He just said that you two have been spending a lot of time together. I figured it might mean that you might work things out," Kat replies.

"I know you love your brother and your niece but Fox and I just share a child… and while we may from time to time alleviate our loneliness together… it doesn't mean we're getting married or anything."

"You two are married," Kat reminds me. I sigh… that's true. Aro saw to it that we wed. There were no papers filed so there was never a divorce if we're getting technical about it. Then I married Jacob… same situation… This is why I never wanted to get married anyways. Edward was so adamant about it. It was so silly. It wasn't even just a piece of paper. It was literally just a… a circus.

A long moment of silence passes, "Jacob and I had sex," I reveal.

"Shut the fuck up," Kat's jaw drops, "when? Where?"

"Last night. His place. Before I left," I replied.

"Details!" Kat claps her hands together.

"It doesn't matter. It was a mistake. We're not getting back together," I reply.

"I don't understand," Kat crosses her arms.

"We were drinking… It kind of just happened. Anyways, I was foolish. Thought it meant something. It didn't. Jacob was clear about that. So I left… Sometime between me leaving and highway 22 he changed his mind and tracked me down but… I dunno. He was right."

"So you wanted to get back together with Jake but now that he wants to get back together with you… you don't?" Kat asks. I can feel her eyes burning holes into me.

"It's complicated."

"It's not complicated. Calculus is complicated. World politics is complicated. Astrophysics is complicated… You and Jacob make sense!"

"Calculus isn't that complicated," I grin and glance over at Kat just in time to see her roll her enormous brown eyes. "Is this it?" I ask as we pull up to a large house overlooking the ocean. "Wow, this is nice."

"Yeah… Kalen wasted no expense," Kat says pointing to the large deck that faces the water. I look down the beach. Equally nice houses line the waterfront. I'd imagine the taxes would be enormous. Waterfront properties usually are. Shame that it rains all the time.

I get out of the car and look up towards the house. Jacob must have seen me pull up from the window. He stands at the door with his arms crossed.

"You sent me to voicemail?" I confront him.

Jacob shrugs, "you had your whole fucking phone disconnected," he says.

Looks like this is going to be confrontational.

"Whatever, where's River?" I brush him off and head towards the house.

"Hey, um… we're going to take off," Seth says, pulling Kat back towards his car as she attempts to follow me in.

Kat glares intensely at her imprint and then sighs, "ffffine," she waves to me, "I'll call you later," she said giddily and then whispers in Seth's ear. Seth's eyes widened. Fuck. Shouldn't have told her about Jake and I. Now the whole pack will know… Not that Jacob would be able to keep it from them anyway. They all live inside each other's mind.

As I approach the front door it becomes clear that Jacob is going to obstruct the entrance.

"Renesmee," Jacob greets me with a grim look. My stomach drops. He never uses my full name.

"Do you mind? I'd like to see my son" I motion for him to move.

"Really? Because you kind of abandoned him just a couple of hours ago."

"Okay. What the hell do you want from me? You got in contact with me. Remember? I'll only be a minute. I just want to check on River. Then you can carry on pretending as though I don't exist. I know that will make you happy."

Jacob's expression turns from anger to hurt. He opens his mouth to say something else but hesitates and then steps out of the way.

When I find River he is out of it and sleeping. I check the pain medication on the bedside table to make sure that it is appropriate. Despite our clan separating, Carlisle was gracious enough to allow me to visit and intern with him here and there. He always made a point to ensure patients were getting appropriate pain meds. I decide I won't wake him so I leave the guest room and walk out to the kitchen.

"Where is everyone?" I ask Jacob. The kitchen is large and white with sleek marble countertops and a glossy white backsplash that lines the walls. Kalen spared no expense with his place. It's lavish. Reminds me of his condo in the city where I stayed for a while after I ran away.

"Kalen and Leah have left for the city for some conference that Kalen is involved in. Misty is at a friend's house. It's just us," he replies.

"Just us and River," I add.

"And River," he confirms.

"Okay well… it looks like River is out for the night so I guess I'll head over to the motel and see him in the morning," I nod.

"That's not a good idea," Jacob says, "look… The reason all of this happened is because Sam was out to get you."

"What?" I don't understand, "Sam? What'd I do to him?"

"Okay… well… when you left town his pack and my pack came together and agreed that there would be no more vampires," he says in a sullen tone.

"You did?" I cross my arms. Not sure why I'm surprised.

"This was before we worked out our arrangement where you could visit River," Jacob admits. "And you never stayed overnight and you never went into town or anything… To be honest, I kind of forgot about the whole thing until we went to breakfast at the diner and word got out. Sam's pack came looking for you. River got caught in the crossfire… don't worry. I'm not finished with Sam… but you shouldn't go too far."

"Is that right? You're going to protect me," I chuckle cynically.

"My pack is guarding the perimeter," Jacob ignores my tone.

"Seth, Quill and Embry are outside?" I ask, going to the sliding glass doors that lead out the 2nd storey deck that overlooks the beach. I peer out. I don't see them, "why don't you invite them in?"

"I literally just said that they are guarding the perimeter," Jacob says, annoyed.

"Can't they guard from inside? I haven't seen the boys in forever," I reply.

"This isn't a reunion, Nessie. They're working," Jacob huffs.

"I was going to hunt," I glare at Jacob for being so condescending.

"There is pizza in the fridge," he replies.

"Human food?" I sigh.

"Make do with it, you're not leaving this house," he replies.

I sigh and walk over to the fridge and open the double doors. I take out the pizza box and grin when I see the re-corked wine sitting next to it, "Italian," I look at the year, "not a vintage. Good. Then I have nothing to feel guilty about," I take out the wine and see Jacob roll his eyes. "What?"

"Quite the drinker now, are we?" he asks, judgmentally.

"I have to in order to reconcile with my horrible taste in men," I shoot back and yank the cork out and begin my search for an appropriate wine glass.

"Here," Jacob says sharply, opening a cupboard and handing me a long-stemmed glass.

"What are you? An animal? You don't drink a Pinot Nero out of a riedel. Pinot Nero goes into a zalto," I move past him and grab the appropriate glass.

"You're the worst," Jacob mumbles under his breath.

I am about to shoot back my own insult when my phone starts to vibrate. I pull the device out of my back pocket. Fox… what does he want? "Hello?" I answer as I flip open the pizza box and assess the leftovers. It doesn't look appetizing.

"Nessie, where are you? You're an hour late," Fox says.

Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

"Shit. Fox, I'm sorry," I glance up just in time to see Jacob scowl in disapproval of who I am speaking to. I look away. It's River's birthday but also, today, is my other baby's birthday. Emma. We made plans to spend it together as a family. I was supposed to return after my day with River and we'd have an evening together. "I'm not going to make it."

"What? Why?" Fox asks, "where are you?"

"La Push… River got hurt, I needed to come back. Is Emma okay? Let me speak to her?" I plead.

"Uh… Ness, this is kind of a big one. 16… she's pissed," Fox whispers, "what should I tell her?"

"This is not the time to bring up that she has a secret brother, okay. Let me talk to her," I ask again.

"Emma… your mom," I hear Fox say. The phone muffles a little as he passes it off to Emma.

"Emma, baby, I'm so sorry I- … Emma? Hello? … Fuck," I look down at the screen to see that the call was ended. "Great." When I glance back to Jacob I see he is wearing a smug grin. "What?" I ask curtly.

"Oh nothing. Just always wondered if you were as shitty of a mom to the hellspawn as you are to River. Guess so," he replies with venum.

That hurt. I feel like I was just punched in the gut. I have nothing to say to that. No retort. No clever comeback. I take a bite out of a slice of pizza and throw it back into the box. I grab the glass and bottle of wine, and go out onto the deck, slamming shut the glass door behind me, leaving Jacob alone in the kitchen.
