Chapter 82

Tris' POV

My heart beats fast as my breath matches beat per beat. Uriah is alive? Uriah is alive? Uriah is alive? How can this be? Uriah is alive!

I sit down at the round table in the waiting room. It's funny, I see everyone around me, but I don't really see them. There is no sound, nothing. Zeke is sitting next to Shauna, they seem to be talking, but I hear absolutely nothing. I feel moisture on my face, I think it's tears, but for some reason... I'm not really sure. My mind continues to wander back and forth through time…

I remember seeing Uriah lying face down on the floor with blood coming from his head. He wasn't moving at all.

I'm standing against the wall, watching as Uriah lays in a hospital bed, there are tubes in his mouth and I can hear the annoying beeping sound that is coming from all of the machines that he is attached to. He isn't moving, he can't breath on his own. The Doctors said there were no brainwaves.

I lean back into the uncomfortable plastic chair as the sadness washes over all of us… The Doctor waited the thirty days that Zeke and Hana requested. There had been no improvements, no signs of life in Uriah's body. The Doctors ran the last set of tests before asking for Zeke and Hana's signatures. The Doctors and nurses worked to remove all of the tubes and turned off all of the machines. Tears fell from our eyes as we all said our final goodbyes to Uriah.

We buried him. Who did we actually bury though? Who would do such a thing?

"Tris?" Tobias' voice breaks me from the fog that I'm in. My head snaps up in his direction, as I now notice that his hand is on my thigh rubbing small circles with his thumb. When did he start doing that? "Sweetheart, can I get you anything?" I can hear the concern that he has for me evident in his voice. I can't help but wonder what he thinks about all of this… Although Tobias and I have both talked and agreed that Uriah's death wasn't our fault, we both continued to feel the burden of his death on our shoulders every day.

"Is he alright?" I finally ask. I can see the concern Tobias has for my sanity, as he realizes that I didn't hear a single word that anyone has been saying this whole time. I see his facial expression frown even further than what it was the last time I looked up at him. He sighs out heavily before he begins to repeat what I obviously missed. He goes on telling me about the findings in Uriah's blood. He seems to be under some kind of serum, but they are having trouble identifying the exact one that is in Uriah's bloodstream. They began an hourly regimen of peace serum and they are hoping it counteracts the serum that Uriah is under. Although the serum isn't having much of an effect on Uriah as Doctor Harris would have hoped. He seems to be calming down a little, he's not struggling as much to get free from his restraints. But he still isn't our Uriah. God, what did they do to him? Who did this? I watch as Tobias gives me a sad smile, before standing up. I continue to watch him as he walks away towards the complimentary coffee cart. He pours two cups of coffee and comes back towards his original seat, handing me a steamy cup of coffee. I glance down at the steam while lost in thought…

"Caleb," I whisper.

"What was that?" Tobias asks, shocked that I said anything.

"What about Caleb? I mean…He is in Erudite, maybe he can help us?" I point this information out to Tobias. He looks at me, while being skeptical. I know what he is thinking, sure I haven't spoken to my brother for some time. The last time we spoke it didn't go very well...At all.

Flashback

"Beatrice?" A voice from behind me says. I turn around to find Caleb standing right behind me. He is holding a book in his hands, his hair is longer than usual and I notice the rectangular glasses that are now sitting on his face.

"You have a tattoo?" He says, his voice muffled. I watch his eyes taking all of me in.

"And you have glasses," I say, pointing that out to him. Weird, he never needed glasses before. Infact..."Your vision is perfect, Caleb. What are you doing?" I ask, trying to make sense of why he feels the need to wear them.

"Um..." He glances at the tables around us. "Come on. Let's get out of here."

We exit the building and cross the street. I have to jog to keep up with him. Across from Erudite headquarters is what used to be a park. Now we just call it "The Millennium." It is a stretch of bare land that has several rusted metal sculptures. We find a private place to stop and talk. He takes off his glasses and shoves them in his shirt pocket. I see his eyes glancing over mine nervously, like he's ashamed of me. No big surprise, ever since it came out that I was pregnant with Sara, that look from him has grown all too familiar to me. I wonder if there will ever be a time again when he will look at me like he used to, like he knows me and loves me.

"What are you doing here?" He asks, nearly spitting out at me. He obviously doesn't appreciate my surprise visit.

"I wanted to see my big brother," I say, trying to sound casual. He presses his lips together as if trying to keep himself from saying the wrong thing, not buying a word of what I just said. "You don't look very pleased to see me," I decided to throw in there.

"Well, what did you expect? I mean come on, this isn't even allowed, Beatrice. Also lets not forget that you stopped being my sister the day you allowed that boy to touch you," Caleb hisses.

"His name is Tobias. Your niece's name is Sara," I correct him, trying to keep my blood from boiling out of control. How dare he? Suddenly his gaze is no longer on me, but on his shoes, as though they are the most interesting thing in the world at this moment. What the?

"You think you made the right choice?" He asks, as he continues to look down. But I know what he is referring to, our choice to leave our factions. I wonder if he feels the same guilt that I do, from leaving our parents and our faction…

"I didn't think there was one, but… In the end, yes," I continue. "I needed to join Sara and Tobias. Wherever they are is where I belong," I firmly say. "How about you?" But he doesn't answer me, he looks around nervously instead. He is afraid that others might see us. I grab his arm, dragging him closer to an odd shaped sculpture.

"What's going on?" I ask, folding my arms. "What is wrong?" This just can't be about faction before blood. There is more to it, I just know it.

"Something big is happening, Beatrice. Something is wrong." As he speaks, his eyes widen and become glassy. "I don't know what it is, but people keep rushing around, talking quietly and Jeanine gives us speeches about how corrupt Abnegation is all the time, like almost everyday."

"Do you believe her?" I ask.

"No. Maybe. I don't know... I don't know what to believe," he shakes his head.

"Yes you do. You know who our parents are. You know who our friends are. Susan's dad, you think he's corrupt?" I say, hoping to get through to him.

"How much do I know? How much did they allow me to know? We weren't allowed to ask questions, Beatrice. We weren't allowed to know things! And here..." He finally looks up with defeat in his eyes.

"You know things had changed the last few months that I was back home. Mom and Dad bent the rules for the both of us. It's no one's fault but your own if you didn't want to know more," I say, pointing out the truth to him.

"This coming from my slut sister who couldn't keep her legs closed," he spits out. I turn away not wanting him to see the pain in my eyes. It's one thing for people other than my family to call me a slut, but from my own brother ... It's just really painful.

"This isn't Candor, Caleb. There are liars here," I firmly say. I just want to get this over and done with.

"Yeah and you are the expert at lying." Maybe I was wrong to come. "Don't you think I would know if I was being lied to," he says.

"If they're as smart as you think, then no. I don't think you would know," I point out.

"I think you should go, Beatrice." He interrupts me, obviously not wanting to think of the possibility that I might be right and he might be wrong.

"With pleasure," I say, giving up the fight. There's just no point. "Oh and not that it will matter to you, but Mom told me to tell you to research the simulation serum."

"You saw her?" He says, looking hurt that he didn't get to see her. "Why didn't she-"

"Because...Erudite doesn't let the Abnegation into their compound anymore. Wasn't that information available to you?" I don't wait for his answer. I push past him, walking away from him.

Flashback Ends

Without thinking, I reach into my back pocket and pull out my cell phone. I look at my phone in my left hand, thinking thoroughly about what I'm about to do. I don't have his number, but that won't stop me. If I need to, I'll go to Erudite. Sure the last time I saw him, things didn't go well at all, but this wouldn't be for me. Not to mention that this would bust his large ego… There is nothing more in this world that Caleb loves more than to show off his brains. I nod, calling the operator at Erudite.

"Tris?" Tobias questions, as he sits besides me. I raise my phone to my ear, while signaling with one of my fingers for him to give me a minute. I see the frown on his face get deeper than I ever thought would be possible.

"Erudite headquarters, this is Denise. How can I direct your call?" I hear on the other side of the line.

"Yes, hello. Um... I'm looking for Caleb Prior," I say, I can hear the determination in the tone of my voice. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that I won't stop until I get the help that we need for Uriah. I can hear the sound of keys being typed on a keyboard.

"Yes, Caleb Prior. Should I connect you to his personal line, or will his laboratory do?" Denise asks. I bite down on my thumb nail, thinking about my answer. On the one hand, saying his personal line will ensure that he would at least get a voicemail from me if he doesn't answer. On the other hand, the laboratory line might open me up to others that might be willing to help us if he is unwilling too. I decide to go with the ladder.

"His laboratory will be just fine," I answer, while closing my eyes and praying that I'm doing the right thing.

"I'll go ahead and connect you. Thanks for calling Eurdite's headquarters and have an intelligent day," she says. The line quickly goes quiet for what feels like forever.

"Laboratory, this is Cara," A woman says over the line breaking the silence.

"Hi, my name is Tris… I'm Caleb Prior's sister," I say. Truthfully at this point I'm not sure what to hope for.

"Oh Caleb. He is actually, um he doesn't come in for another hour. Can I leave him a message?" She asks. I bite my lower lip not knowing what the hell to do or say. I forgot how early it still is… I look up at the clock on the wall realizing it's not even seven in the morning yet. I decide to take a risk, after all I am Dauntless.

"Actually I was hoping to get some help regarding a case in Dauntless," I say, hoping that her need for intelligence will take the bait.

"Case? What sort of case? I'll be more than happy to help you," she says, her voice sounding genuinely interested. I internally smile, thrilled by her words. I inform her that we have a member in the infirmary that seems to be under some kind of serum that we just can't identify and need some assistance with. She happily agrees to come in and help us. She offers to inform Caleb of the current situation, since Caleb seems to be running the lab these days and he might be more helpful in identifying the serum and helping Uriah. I leave out the important information that Uriah was supposedly brain dead and that we buried him a few months ago. Along with the fact that he is Divergent, they don't need to know that.

"You sure about this?" Tobias asks me the moment I hang up the phone call with Cara. I look up into his worried eyes not being exactly sure about what to say to him…. But I know that I have to say something.

"We need answers, they might have them for us." With that Tobias agrees, nodding his head.

We sit in silence, or what is the closest to silence that we can get to. The only sounds in the room are Marlene's constant whimpers and Hana's sniffles. Everyone in this room watched as the Doctors and nurses worked together to pull Uriah's plug. We all sat around in his hospital room waiting and praying as we watched his breathing slow and then his heart beat suddenly stop. I'm sure everyone has the same question on their mind that I do as we sit here, once again waiting and watching. How did we get from there, to here? How did they fake Uriah's death with him being right under our noses? Hana and Zeke were the last ones with Uriah after he was pronounced dead. They were with him for well over an hour holding his hand and crying with Hana's youngest son. Yet here he is breathing, fighting and his heart is beating fast and strong…As he struggles to get free. Only he isn't our Uriah, to us he isn't even in there. He looks at each one of us with vacant eyes, seeing right through us.

When Marlene finally took her turn to sit with Uriah, she tried so hard to connect with him but she failed miserably just like the rest of us. She even tried to touch him, but she only ended up with a bunch of scratches on her hand as he tried to fight off her touch. She ran out of the room, bleeding and crying. Doctor Harris treated the wounds on her hands, but he couldn't treat her broken heart. I may have walked away without a scratch on me, but I didn't have any luck with breaking through to him either. The peace serum has only been helping to calm him down for just a short amount of time, it seems to be wearing off pretty quickly. Doctor Harris has to wait for sometime in between doses, before he can read minister more of the serum to Uriah.

"Tris? Tris? Sweetheart, they're here," Tobias says, as he walks into the waiting room. Behind him is a woman with long blonde hair and green eyes. I can't help but notice the resemblance between her and...Will. Huh? She walks into the room smiling widely. I can see the excitement in her eyes and on her face, at the possibility of solving a mystery. Although I am quite surprised when I see Caleb walking in right behind her. He looks around the room at everyone while showing his confidence, but he leaves me for last. When his eyes land on me there is no spark in them like when we were kids, it's more like an annoyance that he has to put up with me. Well I hate to say this, but the feeling is mutual at this point. I remind myself why I called him in the first place, to help Uriah.

"Beatrice," Caleb says, simply.

"It's Tris," I spit out. I try to keep myself calm, but the sound of my given name off of his lips really fuels the boiling in my blood.

"Excuse me, Tris," he corrects himself. "It's good to see you," he says. His smile is fake, as I can see it's all for show. We both stare at each other, neither one of us is willing to show any sign of defeat to the other. I cross my arms over my chest, I will not be the one to speak first...

"Um...Tris, right?" The woman asks, holding her right hand out for me to take. She glances between Caleb and I, as if she is purposely saving either one of us from each other. "I'm Cara, we spoke on the phone earlier." I return her smile, while taking her hand and firmly shaking it. I cringe at the thought that I may have been a little too rough at first with her, as I was still lost in my anger with Caleb.

"Yes Cara, it's nice to meet you," I say, while releasing her hand. She doesn't waste anytime at all, as she is eager to get right down to business. She asks to be taken to the Doctor in Uriah's case so that she can go over Uriah's labs, as well as order more in case they need them. Tobias is sceptical about leaving Caleb behind with me, as he turns to me with a questioning look as to why Caleb has yet to move from his spot. I imagine he only leaves us alone knowing damn well that there are far too many witnesses around us for either one of us to start anything. I take a deep breath, realizing that Zeke and the others are staring at me. They are questioning what Caleb and Cara are doing here. I turned my back on Caleb with no problem at all, as I explained to the room full of Uriah's loved ones that I called my brother over at Erudite for help and got not only him but one of his assistants who was willing to help us. They were all quick to show their gratitude towards Caleb for coming out and helping us get Uriah back. Something about Caleb's reaction to them catches my eye. Sure in Abnegation taking credit for a good deed was frowned upon, we rarely accepted any form of appreciation, but he doesn't seem uncomfortable by the attention. It's something else, something deeper than that, but I can't put my finger on what is going on with him.

Cara's POV

It's very intriguing being escorted by a man who is named after a number. Four seems to be polite like the Abnegation, although he is quite intimidating and scary like the Dauntless. Caleb wouldn't say very much to me on our ride here, as he always likes to keep his private life to himself. The most I know about him is that his former faction is indeed knowledge only comes from the fact that I was there during his choosing ceremony, as it was also my own. I don't care to know why he chose to leave that life behind. As well as I can't even imagine what made him take that course, as I was born and raised in Erudite and that's all I know.

I chose to work alongside Caleb's in his laboratory because of his reputation that Jeanine gave him during our initiation days. She often praised him and favored his opinions about experiments and serums. I'll admit he is an impressive act to follow. I loved the idea that serums could help cure people from certain diseases and sicknesses, something that Caleb spoke to me about numerous times and he told me that that would be our mission. Lately, I have been having the impression that there has been more going on with Caleb than what meets the eye. I don't know what it is, but my gut has been telling me to be careful, since his huge knowledge of serums, chemicals and the resources that he uses often reminds me more of Jeanine than anything else. Although Jeanine was considered to be one of the top geniuses in Erudite that was ever known… I never fully agreed with the measures that she would take. Experimenting on the innocent, finding reasoning behind her madness and far worse she never enclosed her true motives to her victims. Jeanine's work knew no limits, which is what frightens me about Caleb. He seems to be taking almost the same path as she once did.

I sit down at the table and chair inside of the patient's room. I haven't been told very much about how the patient got to be the way he is. From what I gather, the patent disappeared for some time, upon returning he wasn't like himself at all. He was more aggressive and he didn't recognize anyone. What worries me the most is the glassiness in his eyes and the non-responsiveness to his own name or even just plain words in general. Which tells me that this isn't your ordinary type of serum that we are dealing with. From the chemicals that were found in his blood, I can see the typical compounds of a typical serum that is normally used, including the compound that will make the serum long lasting. Which explains why the mystery serum hasn't worn off even after all of the numerous peace serum injections that Doctor Harris has given him. But I also noticed some other compounds that are typically not used that I too am unable to identify. I decide to run a more invasive test in hopes to help us further. Caleb has been over seeing the laboratory here, making sure that they are following all of the correct procedures. I honestly don't see the need, but he is the boss.

"Excuse me, Cara?" I'm surprised to see Tris standing before me. I have been so lost in my findings that I didn't even hear the door open. The room has been so peacefully quiet ever since I gave the patient a sedative to help him sleep that I lost all track of reality.

"Yes," I answer.

"I was wondering if I could buy you a bad cup of a coffee?" She asks, her eyes roam around the room. I know without a shadow of a doubt that she has more than just a cup of coffee on her mind. I quickly agree, needing a break from this never ending puzzle before me. I stand, walking out of the room behind her.

"So something tells me there is more to this than just a cup of coffee," I ask, getting straight to the point. My mother always joked about how I was always so perfect for Candor, because I have always had issues with censoring my mouth.

"Have you noticed anything that is out of the norm?" She asks. What? Without verbalizing my thoughts, she continues. "Like experimenting… Or testing that involves humans?" She finally gets out.

"You mean like what Jeanine was doing? No, not since she was executed." But I'm extremely curious…"Why did you ask that?" She goes into some of the cases that she comes across at her work, some signaling that people, more like kids, are being experimented on. I can't believe my ears, the thought of something so disgusting happening once again within my faction makes me literally sick to my stomach. Haven't we moved on from this?

I enter the patient's room originally planning to go back to studying more of his lab tests and his chart, but my eyes land instantly on Caleb's briefcase. I can't seem to stop thinking about what Tris told me earlier about the possibilities of our faction once again testing on people. I've had my suspicions about Caleb for a long time now, but nothing like this. I look behind me into the hall, I can hear his voice traveling down the empty hallway. I know instantly that he is in the waiting room with Tris and Four. I may not be sure of what the main topic is about, but whatever it is, I can hear the tension in all three of their voices.

I close the door behind me as I move quickly across the room and towards the briefcase. The sound of metal scraping against metal calls my attention towards the patient's bed. He is no longer asleep, but in fact he is trying to get free once again from his restraints.

"Hello, I'm Cara. I'm working on your case. Can you tell me your name?" I ask him. Sure I know his name already, but up until now I don't think he even knows his own name, let alone anything else for that matter. Every so often I ask, hoping that the peace serum is just having some sort of delayed effect. This time, he stops for a moment and looks up directly into my eyes. He doesn't speak, but he does acknowledge me… Which is something he never did before until now. I rush over to his chart and notate the change in his behavior. I write down the date, time and the behavior from him that I just observed. I place the chart back down along with the pen and return back to my mission. I glance back at the door and then back at Caleb's briefcase. I raise back up on my feet, opening the door once again and pausing to hear to make sure Caleb is still occupied with Tris and Four.

"She's my little sister," Caleb yells. I never heard him raise his voice before.

"She isn't your little anything… She's my wife," Four says in a calm tone. That's weird a man like that, I would imagine he wouldn't take lightly to someone yelling at him, but here he is not only taking Caleb's outburst but not giving into him either.

I shut the door quietly once again, this time I'm determined to get to the briefcase. I carefully open it, not knowing exactly what to look for. I see several files and binders, but I also see a USB hard drive. I close my hand around the hard drive, then I close the briefcase and place it down in its original spot. I straighten up, thinking fast on my feet as the adrenaline is pumping through my veins. I snatch my purse from the table, placing the hard drive into one of the inner pockets. I sling the purse strap over my shoulder and head for the door.

I walk down the hall as quietly as I can. I continue to hear the argument going on between Four, Tris and Caleb as I pass the entrance to the waiting room and head towards the bathroom. I meet Tris' eye as I am passing by, hoping that with just a small gesture that she understands the need to follow me. Thankfully I hear her words immediately as she tells them to quit acting like children and she walks out of the room behind me. I enter the bathroom, letting the door swing closed behind me knowing that Tris won't be too far behind.

"What is it, Cara?" Tris asks the moment she enters the bathroom. Her question sounds alarmed, but she isn't trying to be rude at all.

"I need to borrow a secure computer," I simply say.

I sit down at Four's desk, hitting different commands on the keyboard of his computer. Tris didn't hesitate to ask for Four's keys to his office when she saw the desperation in my eyes. We rushed as fast as we could down the paths of the hallway that led to his office, all while I explained to Tris that I have had my suspicions about Caleb and his cause to Erudite for sometime now. Of course I'm hoping that my instincts are completely wrong.

I am surprised by the contents of the files before me on the hard drive. There are numerous files with the words titled Divergent, serums, mind control and experiments on them. There are over forty files with experiments on them that are all numbered. I feel disgusted as I realize all of this has been happening right under my nose this entire time. I knew Jeanine was Caleb's mentor, he looked up to her, but I never thought he would take after her, let alone continue her horrific work after she was gone. I look up at Tris who is standing beside me, her arms are placed across her chest, her face is red and her jaw is clenching. I have no doubt in my mind that there will be so much hell to pay when Caleb's experiments are exposed.
