Chapter 83

Tris' POV

I had a feeling that confronting Cara about the possible experiments in Erudite would be disappointing, but I had to try. I couldn't help but try my hand at being a Candor for just a short amount of time, as I looked for any signs that she could be lying to me. I have to admit I looked for all of the clues that Christina often saw in me during our initiation together. But I didn't see any of them, which leads me to believe that either Cara was telling me the truth, or she is a really good liar. Something tells me though that she was telling me the truth, as she expressed her own opinions about the awful things that Jeanine was doing. I can't imagine that she would go against her own words and perform the same kind of experiments, especially on little kids.

We walked back to the infirmary together, mindlessly talking really. She was absolutely amazed by the Dauntless compound as this was her first time being in this faction. I would imagine it will probably be her last. She didn't seem too keen on the whole idea of this place. She did however mention having a younger sibling that transferred here this last year. I wondered who it could be. We unfortunately didn't get that far, I was actually prepared to ask her all the questions about who her sibling was, but then she said that she had to get back to her work. I didn't fight her on the matter, seeing that with just a quick glance my eyes landed on both Caleb and Tobias in the waiting room. Although their exchange wasn't anywhere near arguing, I could see the tension rolling off of them in waves. Thankfully Zeke and the others were close by as a buffer if needed.

"No, not like that!" Tobias says, I can hear the frustration in his voice. Oh boy. I excuse myself from Cara as I walk into the waiting room and Cara walks back into Uriah's room. I rush through the entryway of the room, I'm baffled to find the route of the problem is a few blocks of cheese and some steak knives that are both on the floor near the table in the waiting room. I look up at a very amused Zeke and Marlene… As they are both trying to hold back their laughter. Umm, what did I miss?

"What do you mean "not like that?" I imitated you perfectly," Caleb points out. Neither Caleb nor Tobias have noticed my presence yet.

"You did not," Tobias says, his facial expression shows his complete hatred for Caleb.

"Well then do it again, " Caleb demands. I can see the growing frustration on Tobias' face. I clear my throat, letting my presence in the room be known. "Can you do this?" He asks me, as he waves the knife that he is holding towards the cheese.

"Yes, I can." I don't bother to mention where I learned how to, Caleb should remember Mother taking the time out of her busy day in Abnegation for my knife throwing lessons. She wanted me to be good and ready for when it was my time to join Dauntless. I could never thank her enough for doing that, because not only was I out of shape from being raised in Abnegation, but I had also just given birth to Sara… I needed a lot of help.

"Can I ask you both what the cheese blocks did to either one of you to torture them like this?" I ask, not bothering to hide my amusement.

"Caleb came by to discuss a few things..." Tobias says as he makes his way towards me. He leans his head back against the wall next to me, as he looks at me with devotion. I wonder if he is doing this to be near me and to get away from Caleb, or is he doing it to just irritate Caleb even more than he already is right now. It's no secret at all that Caleb and Tobias have always had their differences between them. More so after my pregnancy with Sara, of course.

"Oh and?" I ask, glancing between the both of them. Is there anything new?

"He just wanted to know about our initiation, seeing that Uriah had just finished his… He wanted to know about the skills that we taught him. That's when the whole knife throwing thing came up," Tobias says. I can see the amusement behind his eyes. I can't help but wonder what he is thinking right now.

"Well at least he didn't throw the knives at this Prior again," Zeke says, while pointing at Tris with amusement in his voice. Marlene shakes her head with laughter, as she tries to bite down on her lip to keep the sound down. Shauna sits in her chair with her hands covering her beat red face.

"Wait, you threw knives at my-?" Caleb begins to say with anger filled in his voice. Oh shit. Since when does he act like the over protective brother, he never was before. "At my little sister?" He continues, gesturing at me. What? Anger boils through me as the name "little sister," rolls off his tongue. I watch as Tobias suddenly stands up straighter in an intimidating way, while turning towards Caleb preparing for whatever he throws at him.

"She isn't your little anything..." He says with his Four's mask and tone clearly in place. Oh boy, here we go.

"She was until you corrupted her!" Caleb nearly shouts out. I glance around the room at our closest friends, my eyes land on Zeke in an instant, he inches closer, ready to pounce in case anything were to happen between Caleb and Tobias.

"You better watch yourself Caleb," Tobias says, his fists are balled up by his side. If Caleb isn't careful, he might be the one checking into the infirmary instead of helping out in one. I don't blame Tobias, not one little bit.

"Caleb!" I warn.

"No Tris, let the man talk. I mean he waited until you were a grown woman, safe, and when you no longer needed him to now show up and act like the older protective brother that he should have been years ago," Tobias says, while glancing between Caleb and I. My blood boils even more at the words that just came out of Tobias' mouth. I know he didn't mean to insinuate that I am weak… But that's what he just did. It's the one thing that I hate most about myself, to be portrayed as weak. Haven't I worked hard enough to prove that I am not weak or a stiff from Abnegation anymore? I'm brave and I'm Dauntless now. Haven't I proved that enough with the hell that I have been through to get to this point in my life?

My eyes suddenly catch on to a moving figure that is passing by right outside of the waiting room. I notice that Cara is giving me the eye, telling me that I need to follow her. My mind suddenly tunes out the words that are being exchanged between Caleb and Tobias, as I wonder how to get out of this room without looking suspicious. Although if they keep this shit up I won't have much to worry about, seeing as I might kill them both at this point. I finally snapped myself out of it, having had enough of them both.

"That's enough, the both of you! Caleb why don't you just get back to helping Uriah," I suggest, ready to be as far away from him as possible. The look in his eye catches me off guard. It's a look that he always had when he was being deceitful. What the hell is that about? I shrug off the creepy feeling that I have inside of me right now as I walk out of the room not saying another word.

I walk into the bathroom while making sure that Caleb or Tobias hasn't followed me. I can see something on Cara's face, that something is definitely very wrong. "What is it Cara?" I ask the moment I am inside of the bathroom with the door shut.

"I need to borrow a secure computer from you ASAP," she says. Something on her face tells me that she is onto something that can help us.

"I'll be right back," I say, while turning back around and leaving her behind. I walk out of the bathroom on a mission. I may be upset with Tobias' words, but Cara seems to be on to something very big. I have to just go with it, if we want to ever get to the bottom of things.

I walk back down the hall and back into the waiting room. I get Tobias' attention quickly, noticing that Caleb has already left. Tobias walks out, joining me in the hallway.

"Tris, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean," he begins to say, but I don't let him continue his words. He doesn't need to.

"I know," I say simply. I wish we could get into this right now, but we don't have the time. "Listen, Cara needs a secure computer, it's very important," I say, letting the anxiousness that I am feeling show in my voice. He presses his lips together into a thin line, thinking for a few seconds before digging into his pockets and handing me the keys to his office.

Cara sits anxiously in front of Tobias' computer. She slips in the hard drive and then hits certain keys into the keyboard. I watch as suddenly under her fingertips a window opens up with several files. I look a little closer to them, catching words like serums, testing and experiments. I feel the chills running down my spine as I realize what it is that we are looking at. The mixture of emotions that I am feeling right now run through me as I process everything before me. I fist my hands into balls, as I place my arms across my chest in disbelief. My brother, my blood, no he is a fucking traitor!

Cara continues to sift through the countless amount of files on the hard drive. Looking for what, I'm not exactly sure. I begin to think about what we need to do with all of this information. Obviously Caleb needs to be stopped, someone needs to put an end to this once and for all. Then I see it, Cara opens up a file that says Uriah Pedrad. The file has charts that have been logged in with every injection that they had ever given to him and how often. I'm even shocked when we both notice that one of the latest entries was made just a few hours ago. Right under our damn noses he continued to do "his work." The file also includes the serum, along with its ingredients and the information continues from there. It includes the doctor that treated him back in Erudite when he was presumed brain dead, the paperwork that both Zeke and Hana signed to pull the plug, along with more charting of new medications and the therapy that Cara says they used to help people out of medically induced comas. She continues to point out certain medications that they used to keep Uriah sedated, and the list seems to keep going for miles.

"There is no wonder why all of our attempts to counteract the serum haven't worked. Caleb has been lying to us all along. I wouldn't be surprised if he has been altering the results of each test that we have taken to cover his tracks," Cara points out. Shit, he has been in and out of the lab with Uriah all day. I close my eyes taking a few deep breaths while trying to keep myself calm. When will this nightmare end? "Is Uriah Divergent?" Cara asks. Shit. What? I must look stunned, as she waits eagerly for the answer to her question, but she just continues talking, not bothering to wait for my answer. "Not that it matters to me, not one little bit," she says. Really! Something about the way she says it makes me almost want to believe her. "I'm just trying to connect all of the dots. Jeanine Mathews was always trying to break through the Divergent's brains and do experiments on them. Since Caleb seems to be continuing with her work… It would make total sense on why they picked Uriah," she explains. "But you are right about wanting to protect that part of him," she assures me. I can't help but nod my head, agreeing with her.

"So you mean to tell me that Caleb, your nerdy ass brother, is behind all of this?" Zeke asks, leaning against the wall with his mouth hanging wide open in nothing but total shock. Tori stands next to him with her arms crossed over her chest, speechless by what I just told her, Zeke and Tobias. Soon after Cara and I confirmed all that we needed to on Caleb's hard drive we wasted no time at all in figuring out what we had to do next.

First we cleared it with Dr. Harris to get Cara not only a place for her to work, but we also got her a much needed assistant. We made sure that the assistant hadn't been anywhere near Caleb since he arrived at Dauntless. We had to make sure that they weren't compromised in any way, shape or form. We made sure to keep everything discrete, seeing that we didn't want to make Caleb suspicious that we were onto him. Not until I at least had a moment to speak and inform all of the other leaders of the factions about what was going on. But we also knew that we had to move really fast, as we didn't know what Caleb's next move would be or what his timeline for his plan was. Our plan moving forward was simple… Now that we knew all of the ingredients of the serum, Cara said that creating an antidote to help Uriah would be a breeze. Therefore, as she started to work on helping Uriah, I worked on getting Caleb locked up once and for all where he in fact wouldn't be able to hurt anyone else. Dr. Harris was more than happy to oblige and help us the moment the shock wore off, that is. I think shock is clear across the board in Dauntless tonight, as so many are coming to find out what kind of person my brother truly is.

After securing Cara and her assistant in their newly secret lab, I rushed back to the waiting room pulling both Zeke and Tobias aside and asking them to get Tori to meet us here. We are currently in the medical conference room, I took a laptop with me and the hard drive so I could show them the proof to all of the allegations that I had just laid out in front of them earlier.

"Tris, you know what we will have to do to Caleb, right?" Tori asks while raising her right hand to her lip and tugging on it. I can see both the outrage that she has for Caleb and the concern that she has for me on her face.

"Fuck!" Zeke says, running his hand through his hair. "This whole damn time… It was him. They faked his death? Who the hell did we end up burying?" He continues. I can see the growing rage in his eyes, I wonder if he will soon lash out at someone.

"You okay?" Tobias asks, looking down at me. He slowly wraps his arm around my shoulder, holding me closer to his body.

"No." Then something I didn't think about until now hits me. Oh my god, "what am I going to tell my parents? How am I going to tell them that their perfect son…" I trial off, unable to finish my sentence. Just the thought of seeing my parents disappointed, even if it's not at me, makes me even more outraged at Caleb.

"Tris, don't worry about that now. I can call Andrew. He is a councilman after all, so he needs to be involved in Caleb's...Sentencing anyway," he says. I can see the caution that he is using with me, as he speaks his words.

"No, I need to be the one to do it. It's only right. I can't be a coward and not do this myself," I say.

"Okay, but I'll be right there with you the whole time," Tobias says. He glances back up at Zeke who is on the borderline of losing his control.

"So what now? When do we arrest him?" Zeke asks. I can feel the rage rolling off of him in waves. His hands are balled up into fists at his side, he is swaying back and forth ready to charge out of the room at any moment to beat the crap out of Caleb. Not that I would stop him. Caleb may be my blood, but Dauntless has taught me that blood sometimes doesn't matter. Sometimes those that are around you are more like your family than the blood that you share. Caleb stopped being my brother a long time ago, but that also doesn't mean I wish him any harm. I only hope that he isn't sentenced to death for his horrific crimes.

"We arrest Caleb and then hand him over to Candor for further judgement and his sentencing," Tobias answers. "Tris, you don't have to be with us when it happens, you can stay with the others if you want," Tobias says, taking my feelings into account.

"No, I need to be there," I say, determined to see this through. I explain to him that he is also a suspect in one of the complaints I received in my office about kids being experimented on. Tobias nods, probably not knowing what else to say to me. Although we all know that Caleb has indeed dug himself into a large whole that no one will be able to get him out of this time.

It has been hours since Caleb's integration has taken place. At least that's what it feels like it has been, as I sit on one of the benches in the integration room in Candor. I still don't understand how we got here. How did he get here? What changed him so much?

My mother and father soon arrived here shortly after Tobias, Tori, Zeke and I escorted Caleb to Candor. I called Daniella on the ride over here, explaining to her that I needed the file on the complaint that was made about the possibility that someone was doing experiments on some of the children. When I informed her of the situation at hand, she insisted on not only bringing me the file but also staying with us. I didn't have the strength in me to disagree with her.

Tobias had called my parents, informing them of a growing situation with Caleb and that they needed to get to Candor as soon as possible. He gave them as little information as possible, respecting that I should be the one to tell them what is in fact going on with their son. I couldn't even imagine how this was going to turn out. I had just got off the phone with Cara, who in fact almost done with a possible antidote for Uriah when the double doors opened revealing my mother and father in dismay. My mother, who has always carried a smile on her face, looked shell shocked as she couldn't believe what was actually happening. My father on the other hand, looked absolutely outraged. I admit I have seen my father upset and outraged before, most of the time it was at me, but never at Caleb. He looks more Dauntless dressed in grey than Abnegation at this point in time, with his hands balled up into fists at his sides and his lips pressed together into a straight line. I thank goodness that Caleb isn't cleared for any visitors at this time or he would be in so much trouble right now. My father spots me sitting down on a bench, he wastes no time at all walking over to me, leaving my mother alone who seems lost right now in the entrance of the room.

"Beatrice, where is Caleb? What's happened? What has he done?" My father continues to shout at me. I ask him to sit down, but he refuses to while letting his anger get the best of himself.

"Please Andrew, let Beatrice talk," my mother who has now finally caught up to us pleads with him. She grabs a hold of his arm, forcing him to sit down on the bench beside me. He glances at my mother with anger set on his face, his frown deepens as he nods his head, allowing her to drag him to the bench.

"I just…Need to know what is going on," he says, in a more calming tone. I can see the defeat in his eyes at the thought of one of his children being in such trouble. I try, I really try to get my mouth to open to form the words that I have to say to explain to him what has happened, but how do I do that? How do you explain that your only son, your first born has done some really horrible things to innocent people? Things that had begun with a monster of a woman, whom he must have believed was right all along. Leaving him feeling like he should continue her horrific work. I take a deep breath, trying to find the right words to say to my father and mother. I start at the beginning, having them recall my friend Uriah and how he was pronounced brain dead. I inform them that he wasn't really brain dead after all, but he was held in a medically induced coma instead. We were led to believe that there was no hope for him at all, leading us to pulling his plug and burying him, or so we thought. I inform them of the hard drive that both Cara and I found in Caleb's briefcase and how he is the one in charge of all of these experiments on not only adults but innocent children as well. I am forced to watch my mother shed tears for the awful things that her son has done to this city. My father on the other hand goes into complete denial, demanding to see his son and the evidence against him. I tell them that he is with Four and the others. It was agreed per Caleb's request that this would be handled as discreetly as possible. Jack Kang had agreed with him, not wanting yet another city spectacle happening in his faction. Daniella remained quiet, a sight that I never thought I would see in her, as she always has something to day. But not today, today she has been a silent supporter for me. Except when she excused herself to go get coffee for everyone. I guess there is a little Abnegation in all of us. Tobias comes out with Jack and the others trailing right behind him.

"Where is Caleb? I demand to see my son now!" My father says. You can see the rage and the tension that is riddled within his whole body.

"Mr. Prior, please calm down. Caleb is cooperating with us and the investigation against him," Jack says, with his hands resting in his pockets. "We will be taking into account his cooperation in all of this when his final judgement is passed on," Jack says, I can see he is holding back as best as he can.

"So what aren't you telling us?" I ask. I can see it in each of their faces…That something is happening. There is something more that they discovered.

"Seems that Caleb believed in Jeanine's work so much… That he wanted to carry her mission out," Tobias answers for everyone. "The break ins, the missing files, the weapons… It was all Uriah under the simulation that Caleb had put him under. He wanted to finish what Jeanine had started," Tobias finishes. My stomach sinks realizing that that would have meant a war on Abnegation then.

"I want to see Caleb. I want to see the evidence against him now! There has to be some kind of mistake!" My father yells out. My mother on the hand hasn't said so much as a word. She knows for a fact that Caleb is more than capable of doing all of this, just like I do. The last few years that we spent in Abnegation together proved that. She wipes her silent tears that have fallen down on her cheeks with not so much as a sound.

"Mr. Prior, it has been agreed that you will sit out on this decision. Caleb is your son after all, so it is a direct conflict of interest," Jack says. I can see the color red instantly darken on my father's face when he gets even angrier.

"I am the councilman of this city!" He roars.

"When it comes to this case you're not. Right now you're a father struggling to come to terms with his son's actions," Jack counteracts. Although I understand my father's frustration, I totally agree with Jack in this instance. It would be highly unethical if my father was a part of the deciding factor in this investigation against Caleb.

"Andrew, please settle down," my mother begins to say, reaching out for his arm. But he pulls it free from her grasp, he stares at her for a few seconds before storming out of the room. My mother takes a deep breath before turning her attention back towards us, "he is just at a loss right now, we both are. We both knew that Caleb was always capable of so much…But nothing like this," she says the last part in near tears again. I can't take the sight of my mother in such a state as I encircle her in my arms. "But I know that he has to pay for his actions," she says, pulling back from me. She pats my arm that has now fallen between us. "He was just always so easily able to be manipulated by people. If something was explained to him and it made sense in the end…Then it must have been true. I would imagine that's what Jeanine did, she took advantage of him. Not that it is in any way an excuse, but it more than explains how we all got here," she explains. I would imagine that she is trying to make sense of all of this in her own head. The reason why we all got here and where we are right now.

We finally arrive back at Dauntless, I can feel the strain from the day's events wearing down on me. Unfortunately I know we are nowhere near ending the day just yet. Not long after Father left the integration room, Jack Kang had announced his punishment for Caleb. He explained to us how he took everything into account for Caleb's benefit as much as possible. Including factoring in Caleb's cooperation in the matter. There are also arrest warrants out for those that assisted Caleb in his scheme. Therefore Jack came to the conclusion that Caleb would not get the death serum after all. But he would get his memory swiped instead and be exiled to the factionless. Jack Kang feared that if Caleb's memory was not swiped that it would leave too much room for errors for this not to happen again in the future. Caleb's mind is an ocean full of information waiting to come out and cause god knows what in the future. We just can't let that happen, not again. All of the leaders, minus my father of course, agreed on the judgement that was to be passed onto Caleb. We said our goodnights and our farewells. Tobias even offered to take me in to say my farewell to Caleb, but I refused. That man stopped being my brother long before we both left Abnegation. I would rather think of him as dead, than the man that he has come to be.

Zeke, Tori, Tobias and I all walked back through the double doors of the infirmary. We don't bother stopping off at the nurse's station as it's the same nurse from when we left earlier. Was that only just a matter of hours ago? It feels like it has been days now.

We walk silently through the halls and pass the empty waiting room. Zeke is the one that reaches Uriah's room first. He doesn't stop to bother to knock on the door, instead he slowly turns the door knob, cracking the door open. We walk in one by one walking into a room full of Uriah's closest loved ones. Zeke rushes to Hana's side, taking her hand in his, silently questioning what is going on, as Cara stands beside Uriah's struggling body. She's holding what seems to be a filled syringe.

"Good. You're all here just in time," Cara says, smiling at us.

"Time for what?" I ask, while Tobias keeps his right hand on my lower back.

"My sister did it, she created the antidote," Will says, proudly. Wait? What? What did he just say? I must have so many questions written all over my face because Cara and Will both look at each other and burst out into laughter.

"Yeah, Cara is my twin sister," Will informs me.

"I'm still older than you…Obviously mom gave me more brain cells than you," Cara says, bantering with him. I smile, I had no idea they were siblings, let alone twins. I guess it makes sense though, I always thought she looked familiar, but I couldn't figure out why. Guess now I know the reason why. Everyone in the room laughs at their banter, as she inserts the needle into the I.V. drip and pushed the plunger down. We all sit patiently in silence as we watch the yellow liquid snake around the cord of the I.V. and the liquid disappears into his arm. We stare at the man that continues to struggle to free himself from his restraints. It seems like hours have passed and there is still no change. Cara checks Uriah's vitals every fifteen minutes or so, looking for any change or any sign of hope whatsoever. Finally we all begin to see a change in Uriah, as all of our jaws drop to the floor watching as Uriah finally stops struggling. Slowly his breathing slows down and he seems to calm down his behavior. He continues to improve slowly over the next hour. Then Cara injects him with another dosage. It doesn't take long after the second injection for us to start seeing more changes within him. He begins to blink and clear his throat. We watch as he slowly glances towards his hands that are still tied up, he flexes his fists open and closed. Then it happens, he finally looks at each and everyone of us, his eyes start to redden with unshed tears as he drinks each one of us in.

"I...I'm finally free," he says. Hana, who was already crying and whimpering, jumps up and runs to Uriah's beside and finally gets into the bed with him. Zeke on the other hand, stays frozen, while standing in place with tears running down his face. Marlene whimpers loudly, as she too stands up and runs towards the bed and jumps into the bed on Uriah's other side. Hana and Marlene both sandwich the poor man, as the rest of us all move closer towards Uriah's bed. I can see the relief on Tobias' face, the happiness and the overwhelming shock that he is feeling right now is written all over him.

"Can someone get these damn things off of me? Please! And can someone get me some damn Dauntless cake…I'm freaking starving!" He shouts out. We all laugh at the typical Uriah that we all love and miss so much. Tobias scrambles to free Uriah's wrists from the handcuffs. Uriah turns his hands quickly the moment they are freed, grabbing a hold of Tobias' hands tightly. "Thank you," Uriah says, with appreciation heard all throughout his voice. "Thank you."

"It was my fault," Tobias begins.

"No. None of this was your fault…It doesn't matter anymore. What matters is that we are all here now," Uriah says, glancing at each and every one of us. "And we are all going to be okay," he says, smiling.

"Oh god, Erudite made him mushy!" Zeke yells out, smiling wider than I have ever seen him smile before. "Alright group hug," he says, holding both his arms wide open and moving towards all of us. We all embrace each other tightly. Poor Cara is stuck in the middle.

"Um, I don't even know you people," she says, joking.

"Well…You're fucked then because you're family now, bitch," Zeke jokes.

I laugh and cry at the same time as I take in this special moment. This moment that I wished would come, but never thought it would. Taking in all that I have been blessed with, all that we have been blessed with. I glance over at the love of my life, he is happier than I have ever seen him. I can't help but think about what I always told Tobias before he left for Dauntless so long ago. ""Just two years of loss, for a lifetime of happiness," and what a happy life it truly is.

I fell in love with him long ago when we were kids. But I don't just stay with him by default as if there's no one else available to me. I stay with him because I choose to, everyday that I wake up, every day that we fight or lie to each other or disappoint each other. I choose him over and over again and he chooses me.

Just as I insisted on his worth, he has always insisted on my strength, insisted that my capacity is greater than I believe. And I know without being told, that's what love does when it's right... It makes you more than you were, more than you thought you could be.
