Sitting on the sofa Kate pulled her knees up dipping her hand in to the tin of Favourites that had been a gift from the old lady next door to say thank you for the help over the past few months. She had also a little something for each of the kids. They all had the same; a blanket with a koala sat in a gum tree.

It was truly Christmas limbo when she awoke that morning, she had to double check what day they were actually on and was surprised that it was only the 29th, all the days had seemed to merge in to one, a bit like the lockdown in march only with more booze and food to snack on. It was always a odd period as the year drew to its close no one really knowing what day it was stuck in a food coma from all the sweets and food left over from Christmas

"what you watching?" Mike asked walking in

"just a film" She smiled

"yes, I can see that. What film?" he asked sitting next to her

"Anna and the king. It's a non-musical version of the king and I. it claims to be based on the memoirs of Anna Leon-Owens although even she did take some artistic license with what she wrote" Kate smiled. "though I must say I prefer the musical, there isn't the romantic suggestions between anna and the king." she said pulling her knees up on the sofa

"oh right" Mike smiled nodding acting like he was interested

"and you don't really care" Kate half laughed

"not Really" he smiled "do you want a sanga"

"go on then. Is there any of the ham left?" she asked

"yeah loads" he smiled "although I was going to do that with egg and chips for tea tonight"

"oh right. Cheese and tomato sandwich then will have to do"

"unless you want a mozzarella and tomato panini" Mike suggested

"oh yum that will be better" she smiled

"right one mozzarella tomato and pesto panini coming right up" he smiled

He returned moments later and handed her a plate with the panini on "there we go" he smiled

"thanks" she said taking a bite and slightly regretting it as the molten cheese burnt the roof of her mouth slightly

Later that evening Kate curled up on the sofa. They were watching an old film about the second world war based on the true story of 2 Australian woman. A nurse and a nun both of which survived being prisoners of war in Papa New Guinea. It showed their unlikely friendship and the hardships they faced

"i thought I would just do nibbles for new years that way we can just eat what we want when we want and it will do for staying up to see this year out" she smiled

"sounds perfect" Mike grinned

" I know its just us but that way we can pick and have snacks through till midnight" she smiled

"whatever you want" Mike smiled focusing on the film

Resting her head on his shoulder Kate sighed "god I can't wait for this year to be over" she said as the news came on with Covid updates. There was nothing new to report locally but it was getting worse in other parts of the world.

"same" Mike sighed "lets just hope 2021 will be a better year to come"

"doubtful especially with this new strain that has been reported in Europe but we can hope." she said

"positive thoughts" mike smiled

"yeah" she smiled "anyway. Early night, I think. I need lots of sleep if I am going to see this year out. Care to join me" she grinned

"I thought you'd never ask" he grinned
