Entry 87
I think I've come up with a plan.
I am going to try and show the Vikings the true nature of the dragons. I have no idea how it will go, but I can't just do nothing. Best case scenario, they watch long enough to see that I'm not in danger. Worst case scenario… I end up dead.
I'm going to tell Astrid my plan as soon as I see her. It's really early in the morning, as the sun hasn't even begun to rise yet, but I can't sleep. I guess I might as well visit Toothless one more time, just in case this goes wrong. And if something does happen to me, I'm going to make sure Toothless is safe. I trust Astrid will keep his secret… But I'm going to say my goodbyes, just in case.
…
Toothless didn't seem to understand. I brought him an extra serving of his favorite fish, and told him that no matter what happens in the future, I won't let any harm come to him. I told him that if it's Astrid who comes next time, not to worry, because I told her to. And… I told him he's the best friend I've ever had. That was really hard, and I got so overwhelmed my emotions nearly got the better of me. Toothless just looked on with confused, worried eyes. I gave him one last scratch, then headed out.
When I got back to town, Astrid was up. I pulled her aside and explained my plan for the Kill Ring. I asked her to protect Toothless, should something happen, but she didn't respond at first.
"Hiccup… you… you can't be serious?" She said finally.
"Astrid-"
"You don't think they'll really listen, do you?"
I couldn't say anything to that. The truth is, I DON'T know if they'll listen. Vikings are impatient, stubborn people; I just hope I can hold their attention long enough. "Just promise." I said.
"I don't want you to get yourself hurt."
"Funny. You were perfectly fine with it yesterday."
She glared at me. "I guess, but… it's different now. Not that I care, but… I don't want you doing anything you can't handle."
"It'll be okay, Astrid. I need to do this. So, please, promise me."
She looked me up and down, seemingly torn. "Fine." And with that, she headed off into town.
Now, I'm just waiting for my time. My heart won't stop racing and as much as I know I should, I can't bring myself to eat. I feel sick… though I know it's just anticipation. I really, really hope this works. For Toothless' sake… and for mine.
Until next time…
-H
