"Mellie, I'm talking to you twice in one day. You must be very bored."
"I need advice."
"I'm listening."
Olivia had been trying to get off the sofa to refill her bowl of popcorn. She was still mindlessly flipping through channels. Being lazy was a treat for Olivia. Fitz was putting the babies to sleep. Karen was getting ready for bed.
"Jake is not Kelly's dad."
"What?"
"She's getting darker. Her dad is a black guy. A really nice black guy. His name is Marcus Walker."
"The mayor?!"
"Yeah, he wants to be public with our relationship. I don't know Liv. He's a black activist with a white woman."
"He wants to be with you, and he doesn't want Kelly?"
"He didn't know Kelly is black until he saw her at a restaurant with me and Marisa earlier today. He wants us to be a family. Marisa hasn't completed any adoption paperwork. I'm taking antidepressants. She wants to give me a few months to change my mind. Kelly is staying with her. It can be temporary or permanent."
"So what are you going to do Mellie?"
"I don't know. My baby is black. She was pink, and now she's golden brown. I can't teach Kelly how to be a black woman."
"He can help you with that."
"Karen is going to be confused. She won't understand how a white woman can have a black baby."
"I will explain the situation to her before we leave for Virginia."
"Thank you. I guess I will give Marcus a chance. He wants me and Kelly to move in with him."
"Go for it. You should give him a chance."
"Okay. I'll call you later. I'll get a hotel when you bring Karen to visit."
"That's great."
Olivia dropped the phone on the sofa. After that conversation, she needed a glass of wine. The activist was not so pro black when it came to his relationship. Hopefully, they would be happy together.
