Backatcha
"Sir?"
"What is it, J?" Tony asked, stepping out of the shower. He grabbed a fluffy white towel from the warming rack and wrapped it around his waist.
"I believe you should view your timer."
Tony froze for a few seconds. "J?"
"Yes, Sir."
"Who?"
"I believe that it happened while you were in the forest with Captain America and Thor, Sir. Given you met Captain America earlier, Sir, I believe The God of Thunder is your soulmate."
Tony blinked and then laughed, somewhat hysterically.
"How is this my life, J?"
…
Thor reached out to shake Tony's hand, and for a moment, Tony wondered if he was going to say something, but he didn't. Did Asgardians even have timers? Was Tony doomed to have a soulmate that lived on a different planet? Literally?
Jesus.
He said goodbye softly, knowing he was probably saying goodbye to his chance at the special bond that people wrote sonnets and novels about, and then he hopped into his car and he drove off with Bruce, because what else was he going to do?
Beg the alien god to love him?
Not likely. Tony had never begged for a thing in his life; he didn't beg in Afghanistan, he didn't beg Obie, he certainly wasn't going to beg now.
…
"Sir, Thor has arrived on the Helicarrier. He's requesting your presence."
Tony dropped his hammer in surprise. "Thor?"
"Yes, Sir. Mr Fury has sent along the message."
"Huh. Uh. Do you think he knows, J?"
"I would imagine so, Sir. Fury has just pinged you again; he's quite insistent."
Snorting his amusement, Tony shook his head. "He does know that if he tries to demand that I come, I'll only take longer?"
"I'm sure he does, Sir. But I believe it is Thor that is making demands at the moment."
"Tell them I'll be there soon, J."
He looked at the shiny red and gold suit and smiled. It was a good job he'd finished fixing it.
…
"Man of Iron!"
Tony let the faceplate flip down as he landed. Thor, Fury and Coulson were waiting for him in the landing bay.
"What's with the welcoming committee?" Tony asked, brow furrowing.
"I wish to speak with you," Thor said, his tone lowering. "Mr Fury and the Son of Coul insisted on waiting with me."
Tony leant to the side to look around Thor's shoulders. "Hi. Can we help you?"
"Stark—"
"You can go now, Nick," Tony said, waving cheerfully.
"What is this about?" Fury asked, looking between them.
"None of your business," Tony replied. He glanced at Thor. "Shall we?"
Thor grinned at him and lifted his hammer. "After you, Man of Iron."
…
They stopped on top of Stark Tower, but rather than leading him inside, Tony simply leant back against the railing.
"You are my soulmate," Thor said, stepping close. "Did you not know?"
"Uh. I was… informed by my AI after the battle, yes. I didn't know when we first met."
"You knew and yet you let me leave?" Thor asked, and Tony cursed silently when he realised that Thor was sad.
"It… was nothing personal?" Tony offered, a little awkwardly. "I just… I guess I didn't think you'd believe me? And you know, I just died again and it was just… all a lot, I guess?"
"Yes. Please don't do that again," Thor said, nodding his head.
"Uh. Die?"
"Yes."
"I mean… everybody dies sometime, Thor. It's the way of the world."
"I will fetch you a golden apple," Thor said firmly, as though it was a foregone conclusion.
"You can't be serious? Thor, I'm the last person you want to get involved with on earth! Trust me, there is so much wrong—"
"Anthony."
Tony blinked. Nobody ever called him Anthony. Ever.
"You are my soulmate. I have waited over a thousand years for you to grace me. Having only a few years with you would pass in the blink of an eye."
Over a thousand years. What.
"I uh, think maybe we need to get to know each other first?"
Thor smiled. "That is why I am here. I am hopeful that you will allow me to stay with you?"
"I… yeah. Yes, of course you can stay with me."
Thor smiled and reached out to cup Tony's cheek. "I will try my hardest to make you happy every day, Anthony. This is my vow to you."
"I… backatcha, Thor. Backatcha."
