At some point, Maya and Josh had both drifted back to sleep. By the time they woke up next, snow had built up on the window sill, blocking out a portion of the grey light coming from outside. Maya rolled over and picked up her phone from where it had shifted in the night.
"There's a weather advisory" She muttered, placing her phone back down and rolling back over, settling her head against Josh's chest.
"What does that mean?" Josh asked, still half asleep, his eyes still closed.
"It means we're not going anywhere today" she replied, pulling the quilt they had been sleeping under a little higher up over her shoulders.
"Fine by me" he said through a yawn he was trying to stifle. As much as she would like to lay there for the remainder of the day, now that she was awake, Maya's need for caffeine was biting at her. On a normal day, she might have challenged Josh to a game of rock paper scissors to see who would have to leave their warm nest and brave the cold air of the apartment, but since she'd woken Josh up in the middle of the night for her own selfish gain, she decided to be nice and get up to brew it herself.
"Where are you going?" Josh complained, as she wriggled out of his embrace.
"Coffee!" Maya replied as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. Josh flinched at the cold as Maya pulled the blankets back so she could crawl out of the fort they had constructed.
"Jesus" she yelped as her barefoot hit the cold hardwood floor. Putting the idea of coffee aside for a second, Maya hurried to Josh's bedroom and went straight to his wardrobe. She pulled a pair of thick socks out of one of the drawers and shoved her frozen feet into them. She then rifled around until she found a second pair of sweatpants that would fit over her own, and a massive old hoodie of Josh's that was oversized on him, and fit more like a dress on her.
"Is the heat even on in here?" Maya asked as she shuffled out of the bedroom and towards the tiny kitchen. The sound of a none committal grunt came from the pillow fort. Maya disregarded it and made herself busy with making coffee.
She had to keep moving in order to keep warm, so while she waited for the coffee to brew, she ambeled over to the fridge and poked her nose inside, seeing if there was anything in there worth making for breakfast.
"How do you feel about eggs?" Maya called, surprised that she couldn't see her own breath judging by how cold it was. Josh didn't answer, which she took to mean that he had fallen back to sleep.
She supposed she couldn't blame him, she had kept him up for a few hours going over and over the finer points of her life's latest challenge. The least she could do now, would be to let him get a few more minutes of sleep while she made breakfast, just as long as he didn't get too used to it, she joked to herself.
Once the coffee machine beeped, she pulled down the mug she knew Josh's liked the best, the one printed with a pattern of dancing coffee pots, and poured him a large cup. She added the dash of half and half cream that she knew he preferred, and shuffled across the cold apartment, ducking back under the blanket fort to deliver the coffee.
She nudged Josh with her knee to get him to sit up. When he opened his eyes, his face broke into a goofy grin.
"What are you wearing?" He amused, looking at her multiple layers of clothing. Maya rolled her eyes.
" You can laugh now, but wait until you get out here" She responded, thinking about how hard Josh would have ribbed her if she had thrown on the knit toque she had been thinking about.
"It can't be that bad"
"You'll see. Now shut up and take your coffee. I have to go turn the eggs before they burn" Maya comanned, shoving the cup into his hands and ducking back out of the tent.
"Wait, you're making breakfast?" Josh called after her.
"Don't act surprised!" Maya defended, secretly agreeing with his shock. Maya was a decent cook, and a better baker, but she rarely put her skills to use. Why bother when any type of food she could ever want could be delivered within half an hour.
She walked back over to the shove and pushed around the scrambled eggs she was cooking slowly on low heat. She took a long gulp of the coffee she had poured for herself and she carefully turned the eggs.
"Jesus christ!" Josh yelped as his own feet hit the cold floors.
"I told you!" Maya called over her shoulder, smiling to herself.
"Yeah yeah" Josh called as he headed into the bedroom in search of socks of his own. Maya divided the mixture of eggs, sauteed veggies and cheese into two bowls and passed one to Josh as he entered the kitchen, properly dressed for the cold.
"To what do I owe this honour?" Josh asked jokingly, taking a bite of the steaming eggs she offered him.
"Just a little apology for waking you up this morning" Maya said simply, taking a bite of her own breakfast. Josh raised his eyebrows at her.
"Interesting," Josh said knowingly. " I had something else in mind for that"
Maya rolled her eyes at him, but she was smiling.
"Eat your breakfast horn dog"
"I'm done!" Josh said, showing her his empty bowl.
"Jeeze, where did you put it all?" Maya asked in shock.
"If you took normal sized bites, instead of eating like a little bird, you would be done too" Josh joked.
Maya looked at him pointedly before taking a huge bite of her breakfast, being sure to chew carefully and shallow before sticking out her tongue to show her empty mouth.
"There" She said stubbornly, placing her bowl down and placing her hands on her hips.
"Was that an adult enough sized bite?"
Josh rolled his eyes at her but reached out to grab her hips, pulling her closer to him.
Maya went reluctantly, pretending to be mad.
"It was very grown up" He confirmed, ducking his head down to kiss her. Maya pulled back.
"Ew I probably taste like egg!" Maya protested, ducking away, and reaching for her coffee cup.
"Drink up!" Maya demanded, gesturing at Josh's cup. " Because you taste like green onion"
Josh let out a laugh but gamely took a large gulp of his own.
Maya placed her coffee cup and hopped up on the tiny slice of kitchen counter that was free.
"Alright, now come here"
"Yes maam" Josh said jokingly, crossing the kitchen in one large step to stand in front of her. His hands slid around her hips while she interlaced her own fingers behind his neck.
"Ahh coffee grounds" Maya said against his lips, his breath in her mouth. "Much better" she teased, leaning into his kiss as his tongue pressed into her mouth. His hands slid under the many layers of sweatshirts she was wearing and landed on the bare skin of her hip. She gasped when he touched her skin.
"Your hands are freezing," She muttered, out of breath from their kiss.
"Sorry" he muttered against her neck, where he had been kissing his way down to her collarbone. He went to retract his hand from her sweater, but she caught his wrist.
" I didn't mean you should stop" she breathed, her eyes closed and her head rested back against the kitchen cabinet, unable to focus as his tongue grazed her ear. Josh smiled against her skin, and instead of moving his hand off her skin, he moved downward, past the waistband of her sweatpant.
She gasped when he touched her, the cold of his skin making the sensation that much more intense. Her head fell forward against his shoulder. She felt herself begin to lose control. She turned to kiss Josh's neck, her teeth grazing his skin in the way she knew he liked.
"Alright that's it" Josh muttered, wrapping one of his arms around Maya's back and pulling her off the counter. Maya let out a playful squeal as she wrapped her legs around Josh's hips, one of his hands on her lower back and the other under her butt, holding her weight. He carried her across the small apartment until they fell into the fort they had made, Josh on top of her and the pillows fell down around them.
