This afternoon after bringing some herbs to Kaede, Rin and I went for a walk. The two of us have become so close since I returned to this era last year. I'd always thought she was such a sweet little girl but unfortunately we'd never had much time to really get to know each other when we were looking for the jewel and Naraku. Now she was one of my closest friends.
"What's it like to be pregnant?" she asked. She had been very excited about my baby ever since I told her. I thought it was sweet and I was happy to tell her everything that was going on.
"It's so wonderful, Rin," I replied. "I mean, these first few weeks have been kind of hard since I've been so sick a lot of the time. I've been so happy though. Just knowing our baby is there is such an amazing feeling."
"That's really nice," Rin said. "Is Inuyasha happy too?"
"He's very happy. That's part of what makes it such a great experience. I love how happy he is about it."
"You two are so sweet," Rin giggled. "Do you think the baby will have his ears?"
"I hope so."
"Me too. One time I told Inuyasha that his ears are adorable and he got mad at me but they are. It makes me want to rub them but I'm sure he wouldn't like that."
I laughed a bit. "I'll tell you a secret: he actually enjoys it. If he ever has a hard day, I just rub his ears and he feels better."
"Wow, really? That's so cute!"
As we walked I noticed Rin glancing up at the sky every now and then with a sad look on her face.
"Is everything okay, Rin?" I finally asked. "You seem a little down."
She sighed. "I'm sorry. It's just that I haven't seen Lord Sesshomaru in weeks. He hasn't come to visit me ever since you guys rescued me. He hasn't even written to me or sent me anything. I know he's busy but he's never gone this long without at least sending me a letter. I just hope he hasn't forgotten about me."
"I'm so sorry, Rin. I know Sesshomaru could never forget about you."
"I hope so. It just makes me wonder why he's stayed away from me for so long."
Looking back on everything that went down with Rin's kidnapping, I had a pretty good idea of why Sesshomaru was avoiding Rin. "It could be because he's scared of losing you again."
Rin looked surprised. "Do you think so?"
"I'm pretty sure of it. Sesshomaru was extremely distressed when he came to us and told us you were missing. He never came out and said it but it was obvious that he was very afraid that he would never see you again."
"Why doesn't he just tell me that?"
"The men in their family don't seem to be very good at expressing their feelings."
That made her giggle a bit.
"My guess is that he wants you to stay here in the village, away from him, so you can be safe."
"I don't want to be away from him though."
"Of course not." I thought of something to make her feel better. "You know, Inuyasha tried to make me leave once because he was worried about my safety."
"He did?" Rin said incredulously. "But Inuyasha loves you so much."
"He did it because he loved me. It was a long time ago, we had just gotten back to the village after a big fight, it was actually after a fight with Sesshomaru. Inuyasha had been very seriously injured after that fight and both of us almost died. But the next day, he took me over to the well. He gave me a hug and told me he had been very scared that he would lose me. That was actually the first time he ever really told me how much he cares about me."
"What happened next?" Rin said with interest.
"He took away the sacred jewel shards I was holding onto and told me to go back to my era and never come back. Then he pushed me down the well and I couldn't get back through."
Rin gasped. "How did you get back?"
"I'm still not entirely sure. Maybe it was because we hadn't finished finding the jewel shards or maybe it was because I wanted to see him so badly. I spent a few days away and I was worried about him the whole time. Whenever I went back home at that time he always followed soon after to come to get me but he never did and I was terrified that something bad had happened or that he had died of his injuries. But I came back and I told him how much I missed him and how worried I was so he let me stay."
"Wow," Rin said thoughtfully. "Do you think Lord Sesshomaru really cares about me that much too?"
"I'm sure he does, Rin."
"Well...I still wish he'd come to see me."
"I understand. Next time I see him, I'll tell him."
"Thanks, Kagome. You really know how to make me feel better."
"That's what friends are for, Rin."
