Fate Finds a Way
So sorry guys! I was supposed to have this posted two days ago!
Summary: Instead of going back home, Sam recluses in the woods, succumbing to his nature as that of a man and wolf. He protects his tribe from the very beings that made him into what he is. His peaceful yet violent life is interrupted by a tiny slip of a girl that calls out to him like no other.
Pairing: Bella/Sam
A bead of sweat ran down Sam Uley's forehead as he chopped wood for his fireplace. Today was an unusually hot day, the sun beating down on him. He was the picture of perfection. His long, raven-black hair was in a single braid down his back, his face partially hidden behind a low shaven beard.
His muscles bulged underneath the skin with each swing of the ax, his naked chest glistening with sweat, his stomach clenching with every stroke of the ax, his breath coming out in short puffs.
He stood to the side of his yard, behind him a small wooden cabin that he'd built. It's been five years since he became a wolf, and five years he's been alone. After two months of running on all fours, he finally changed back into that of a man.
Believing to be so long since anyone has seen his face, he stayed in what became his home, becoming somewhat of an artisan. He built his home from the ground up, only making a few trips out into the world in all of his five years.
He was nothing but a rumor. Some claimed to see the missing teen, who was now a man, and some believed he was nothing but a ghost. He hunted his meals, cooked, and cleaned them. The woods were an abundance of nutrients. A river not too far from his home gave him access to fish.
He had access to bear and deer, some fruit if it was in season. Sometimes he'd go to the port, which was a rarity within itself, and shop for seeds to grow his garden. He had an overflow of greens like mustards, collared, carrots, lettuce, peppers, etc., including fruits. He'd even planted a few trees, having fruit ranging from apples to oranges.
All furniture in his home was hand-carved, and he was able to install a few appliances necessary, but aside from that, he lived life as a hunter.
The occasional vampire would somehow access his property, and it gave him something to do. He was protecting his tribe. He wouldn't allow another boy to go through what he had. Any vampire that wandered on his land, never made it out alive.
Washington was slowly getting colder as the months came and went, and Sam had to prepare. He chopped his last few chunks of wood, setting them to the side.
He sat the ax in a tree stump, gathering up his pieces. He started walking towards the porch, freezing as his ears picked up the sound of rustling not too far away. Sam's cabin was hidden behind a forestry of trees and vines, making it hard for humans to find his sacred place.
He waited, setting his wood down. It didn't sound like the pace of a vampire, the rustling seeming uneven for a monster so perfect. Sam prepared himself to scare someone away. No human had ever come so far, and it was quite annoying to have his quiet solitude tainted.
He narrowed his eyes as a woman pushed forward past the thick bushes, halting in place they both stared at one another. She was very pale, standing at about 5'2, long brown hair flowing down her back and across her shoulders. She was dressed in a black short-sleeved shirt, a pair of grey joggers, and hiking boots.
Sam could see her eyes trail across his body, her white cheeks turning a light shade of pink as she met his eyes. She rubbed her arm in embarrassment. "I'm sorry. I seem to have gotten turned around. I've lost my bag, and I was wondering if you had any water?" Her voice was like crisp air, something Sam didn't realize he needed.
He nodded, inkling his head towards his porch. "Sure, come on in," He could hear her light, hurried footsteps as her shoes crunched on the leaves. She paused right before the door, taking off her boots, admiring the porch. "Did you build this?" She asked, stepping into the cabin, looking around in awe.
Straight ahead was the kitchen, and to the left of the home lied a small laundry room, and to the right was a living room, filled with the normal necessities in a home. "I did. Everything in here I made on my own," He went into the kitchen, grabbing a glass. "Ice?" He asked.
She nodded, smiling in thanks. "Again, thank you. I'm just not having a good day," She chuckled. Sam took the class over, his hand brushing against hers in passing. "It happens. So, what's your name?" She took a sip of the water, sighing in relief as the cool liquid slid down her throat.
She stuck out her hand, smiling as he shook it. "My name is Bella. And you?" Sam smiled in return, his eyes drinking her in like a starving man. "Sam. It's nice to meet you, Bella. I'd be happy to help you find your way back on a hiking trail. I know these woods pretty well. Just give me a moment. Take a seat, I don't mind,"
Bella smiled in thanks, taking a seat in the rocking chair. It was huge of course, swallowing her whole, but it was still comfortable. The living held a 4-squared window, that overlooked the forest, giving her a great view of the sky.
She frowned as the sunny sky seemed to get dark, storm clouds blocking the sun in just a matter of minutes. "Shoot." She muttered, standing. She hurriedly made her way towards the front door, a soft groan leaving her lips as the rain poured from the sky, drenching everything in its path.
"It looks like I'll be having a house guest," His voice startled her slightly. It was deep, and very rich in sound, making her wish he'd never stop talking. "Seems like it," She stepped away from the door, shivering as the cold air blasted in.
Heat engulfed her body, two very large hands planting themselves on her small shoulders. "I'll put on some tea. Make yourself comfortable Bella,"
As Sam started the tea, Bella admired his cozy home, finding that this was the type of place people dreamed of. "Are you a contractor Sam?" She called, admiring the tables and chairs. "Used to be," He responded, and she hummed in return.
She found it odd that he had no tv or any technology except an older house phone. He was apparently old-fashioned. What Bella thought would be just a few hours turned into a day. She had never slept next to a man before, but she must say that being "accidentally" cuddled is the best feeling ever.
Sam slept in a King-sized bed, and she wondered how a man like him wasn't married or had a girlfriend. He was stunning. The rain held up through the night, and it didn't look like she'd be going anywhere for a while. The following day she got to know Sam a bit. For one, he was insanely attractive, and rather sweet, although she felt like there was more than meets the eye.
He'd been living on his own for a few years, and rather liked his quiet life. Bella could understand, preferring life to herself. He was strangely attuned to everything, able to pick up on little things here and there. She found that he ran a very high temperature although he was perfectly healthy.
The rain was still coming in short spurts on the third night. She had woken for a glass of water, and after quietly slipping out from under his arm, she made her way to the kitchen. Lightning flashed outside, briefly illuminating the side yard, making Bella peer out in that direction.
At first glance, she thought it was nothing, but after the second flash, she could have sworn she saw someone. Uncertain about what she saw, she decided to wake Sam who had a very different demeanor. After alerting him of her suspicions, he stalked towards the front door, shooing her a quick look. His brown eyes seemed to brighten with each flash.
"Whatever you hear, stay inside," At that, he disappeared into the rain, his body disappearing into the night. Against his instructions, Bella walked to the front door, watching as Sam rounded the corner of the house. She quickly moved to the living room, able to see him very well. The strange figure seemed to move towards him, and Bella watched as Sam suddenly shifted in his own body, a large, black mass taking his place.
She gasped, taking a step back from the window.
She watched in pure terror as the person and the large mass fought, the person quickly losing the battle. She let out a small shriek as body parts went flying. She turned away from the window, freezing in place. She took another glance out of the window, unable to see a damn thing.
The creaking of the wood by the door had her attention, her eyes widening at the figure before her.
There he stood, his long hair no longer in a braid, but dripping water from the rain. His naked body glistening with water. A deep gash on his chest slowly disappeared right before her eyes.
"What are you?" She asked, pushing herself flush against the wall.
As he regarded her with an intense stare, did she really want to know?
