A/N: This idea came after I watched the tv show "The Mist."

It was a dismal night. A human Katherine woke up, still on the ground. She was injured. There'd been an attack. The wolf had disappeared after Peter had fought it off, as well as after a quake had happened. The only thing she could think of was to get up and find Peter. Her human body didn't want to go anywhere, though. She didn't know the cause of the quake, but the last thing she remembered was Peter chasing the wolf off and then the earthquake. Then some kind of mist.

A lone coyote was surveying every inch of the woods, aware that a strange mist had appeared after an earthquake, but now was gone, and wanted to make sure everyone she cared about was okay. That's when she smelled blood. That's when she knew that Katherine was injured.

The coyote raced through the woods, following the scent. If Katherine was out here, so was her dad.

Katherine was on her back, ready to just let herself go back to sleep, when she heard paw steps and a familiar whine. Then she saw a coyote with blue, glowing eyes. She saw her real close to her.

"Go, Malia. Go find your dad. Peter might need you more. Besides, family always comes first."

Kat watched her go, before closing her eyes.

After the earthquake and mist, Damon had ended up in these woods. He didn't know what town he was in, so he went to investigate.

After a while of walking, he saw someone injured that he didn't think he'd ever see again.

He blurred to her side and knelt there, assessing her condition. She'd clearly been attacked by a wolf, considering the claw marks. She'd also been injured by the quake, since a wolf wouldn't cause blood on either side of her head, much less piece of wood in her leg.

He rested his hands on either side of her head.

"Katherine, can you hear me? Open your eyes. It's me," he called, looking at her, while using his senses to listen to her. He could tell that she was on the verge of critical condition.

Katherine was in a field, when she heard a very familiar voice. She'd know that voice anywhere. After all, Katherine had once loved him the most. She'd lied that night, when he'd asked her to tell him her feelings. She'd done it to protect him from Klaus. She'd thought he might kill him for loving her, so she'd made him hate her. She'd also done it to make him let her go, thinking his love for her would get him killed someday.

Katherine looked up at him, surprised to see him in Beacon Hills, but was too weak to really show it.

"Damon?" she half-whispered.

"It's me. I somehow appeared in these woods."

"It probably happened after the strange mist," she replied.

He wondered what she meant by a strange mist but didn't ask. His first priority was to save her.

"Can you digest vampire blood?" he inquired of her.

"I don't know, but there's a doctor at the hospital that knows about what exists. Melissa McCall," she replied and explained.

"Then let's get you to the hospital," he replied.

She let him gently pick her up in his arms. As he did so, she layed her head on his shoulder and wrapped her arms around his neck weakly, closing her eyes. Then she felt the wind, as he blurred her to the hospital.

Melissa was working at the hospital, directing where to put the wounded. There'd been a building that had collapsed when the mist had gone through the town. A lot were injured, some were missing, and others were okay.

When she saw an injured Katherine and no Peter Hale, she assumed the stranger that had brought her here was someone from her past. After all, the way she spoke of her enemies, none of them would be kind enough to get her to the hospital.

She rushed over and told him to get her on a bed in one of the empty rooms. No one needed to see anything supernatural that didn't know what existed.

When she got someone else to direct, she entered the room he'd put Katherine in.

"What's your name?" she had to ask, as she hooked her up to an ivy and breathing mask.

"Damon Salvatore."

"It's nice to meet you. Everyone's hands are tied, so you're going to help me," she replied.

He did everything as told, helping her save Katherine.

When Katherine woke up, she was in the hospital. She saw that Damon was seated on her bedside, a hand on her right one, which told her that he'd been waiting for her to wake up.

She gave a smile.

"Hey," he greeted. "Feeling better?"

"Quite. You decided to stay," she replied.

"Well, I wasn't going to let you die. Besides, you're the only person I know in this town," he replied.

"Well, welcome to Beacon Hills then. It's actually, a lot like Mystic Falls. Except it's most populated by werewolves, instead of vampires."

"In that case, I shouldn't stay long," he replied, realizing the danger.

"As long as you don't anger any wolves, you'll be fine," she assured him.

Melissa came in to check on her and saw that she was awake.

"You're awake," she commented.

Katherine looked at Melissa.

"You know me well enough that you know a werewolf attack is minor to me. It takes more than a werewolf attack to kill me. Speaking of. Have you seen Peter? Peter chased the wolf off. I haven't seen Peter since."

"No. I haven't. We've had our hands full since the mist."

"When can I get out of here? I promise I'll be careful. I sent Malia to find Peter, and if she hasn't come back, then she hasn't found her father. I need to find him."

"Alright. You can go, but be careful," she replied to her. Then Melissa left.

"Who's Peter?" Damon had to ask.

"A werewolf I fell for when I was a vampire, back when I had to leave after Klaus wasn't killed. I came here after Peter changed. He and I got along pretty well, since he's a lot like me. Eventually, I changed him. So did his daughter, Malia," she informed him.

After she explained, Damon realized why she cared so much about this Peter. He was there for her, when no one else was, because they were the same.

After she'd gotten ready, she'd went back into the woods with Damon, looking for either Malia or Peter, or even both of them. She loved Peter, more so than she'd loved Mason, a wolf Damon had killed that she'd loved several years ago. Damon had killed him, thinking he was just a piece in one of her plans. He had but also hadn't been, so she'd been upset at him killing Mason, but now, those times were over with. Mason had been a good guy, but when she'd met Peter, they'd hit it off because they were so much alike. They were the same. A lot of people hated him for past things he'd done, but there were a few people that would miss him if anything happened to him, her included. And it was a plus that she had a vampire on her side. She wanted so badly to find Peter. He was her protector. She just didn't know where he was. But he wasn't the only one that was missing. There were other people missing in the town, too. That was no coincidence from her experience.

She and Damon heard a noise, and they looked to see a coyote. Damon didn't know who it was, but she knew, since Malia was the only one with blue eyes.

"Let me guess. You didn't find him," she guessed, looking at the coyote.

The coyote began to approach, but since she seemed to know the coyote, Damon didn't do anything.

"It's okay. We'll find him. He'll be okay. You know how resilient he is. Why don't you go home? Damon and I will keep searching."

Malia did as she was told, heading back to the loft.

Kat watched her go, and then she continued searching with Damon.

After weeks of searching for Peter and the other missing people, they finally had a clue, finding out what had happened. And so, they found a way to open up the alternate reality, which she realized brought your fear to life. They then, finally found Peter and the other missing people, and were able to get them back home.

After Peter had been saved, as well as the other missing people, Damon decided that he wasn't needed anymore, so he said his goodbyes and went back to Mystic Falls. In the meantime, Kat helped Peter get better after the physical and mental torment and torture from the alternate reality.

After Peter was all better, as were the other missing people, there was peace, the mist never appeared again, and everyone got a happy ending.
