Alice soon spotted Edward, roaming about the streets of Volterra, biding his time until it was noon. There had been no need to split up, for Edward's scent lingered in the air. Jacob had struggled valiantly not to lunge towards him, phasing in front of all the nearby humans. Instead, he and the other wolves waited in a deserted street just outside of Volterra, while Alice and Jasper sought out Edward.

Being small, Alice easily pushed her way through the crowd towards Edward.

"Edward," she whispered. "Come with me and Jasper. The wolves are here and they want to slowly torture you before killing you. We can get you away."

Edward raised a sceptical eyebrow. "Alice, may I remind you that only hours ago, you were perfectly willing to hand me over to the very wolves you're trying to save me from now."

"Of course I had to keep up pretence in front of the family! Edward, you're my brother. I will always love you and try to help you, and support your decisions. Jasper too," Alice lied, glibly.

"Edward," Jasper said, appearing next to Alice. "We know you want to die. We understand you can't live without Bella, and why you killed Renesmee. Come with us. We'll- we'll kill you ourselves. Quickly and as painlessly as we can. I doubt the Volturi will be so lenient with you given this will be the second time you attempt exposure."

Detecting nothing suspicious in either of their minds, Edward nodded. If he hadn't been so arrogant and gullible, maybe he would have noticed the flash of euphoria in Alice's eyes, or the glint in Jasper's, though their minds remained void of betraying thoughts.

The mated pair led Edward out of Volterra, and into the deserted street. Upon seeing and smelling the wolves, Edward tried to leave, but Alice and Jasper's grip on him was too tight, and he could not break free.

"What are you doing, Alice?" he asked, through gritted teeth.

"Oh, Edward," she replied, sadly. "Did you really think either Jasper or I could ever support you after what you've done?"

Without waiting for a reply, Jasper threw Edward onto the ground. Jacob, already in wolf form, instantly pounced on the murderer of his imprint. Jared, Paul and Sam held the vampire down, while Jacob slowly tore little chunks of Edward away, rejoicing in the screams of agony he heard.

Once he was satisfied with the physical pain he'd caused Edward to feel, Jacob nudged the other wolves slightly, indicating he wanted them to back away, which they did. Standing on top of Edward, almost covering the vampire's body with his own, Jacob bit into his neck and swiftly tore it away from his body. Jasper casually threw a lit lighter on the pile of body pieces, and watched with grim pleasure as it went up in flames.

Edward Cullen was no more.

There were to be two funerals. One for Bella and one for Renesmee. The news of Bella's death spread quickly throughout Forks, hardly surprising considering the size of the town. But Renesmee's death was, naturally, kept private. There was to be a simple ceremony just for the Cullens and wolves. Sam and Carlisle had agreed to temporarily lift the treaty, enabling the Cullens to be on the reservation, where Renesmee was to be buried, just for the funeral.

Charlie had been distraught to hear of Bella's death, and easily believed the lie he was fed, about Edward being unable to attend the funeral due to extreme, overwhelming grief.

A few days after Renesmee's funeral, Jacob went to visit her alone.

"I love you, Renesmee. Always," Jacob said, quietly. "All I wanted was for you to be safe and happy, but it was not meant to be. I wish I could have got to know you, for I'm sure you would have turned out a most incredible person. I'm sorry your life was cut short, by your own father no less. It wasn't fair, Renesmee. But when in life is anything fair?

"I don't know how to live knowing my imprint is dead. I don't know what to do with my life. It was turned upside down when I found out about you, and it's just a mess now. I'm just a mess. But I'll try work something out. Then one day, I'll join you. It'll be a long time, but you have your mother with you while you wait. She's an amazing person. I can't think of anyone who would be a better mother to my imprint." Jacob placed a delicate flower in front of the tombstone, and stood up, sighing. "Goodbye Renesmee."

Jacob's world had gone from normal, peaceful, if a little difficult, to dangerous and full of shocking twists. It was falling apart, but he was determined to rebuild his life. People had been falling, one by one. Harry Clearwater, then Bella, then Renesmee. All should have lived longer. All died as a result of vampires. It was cruelly unfair, but it had still happened.

Edward had been blinded by grief and rage, arrogance and stubbornness, and he had fallen because of it.

Jacob did not want to dwell on it. He could never forget Renesmee or Bella, but they were gone, and better left in the past. The Cullens would be moving away from Forks, leaving the poignant memories behind. Jacob, while he could not flee due to his loyalty and obligations to the tribe, would leave those memories behind too.

One by one, they had fallen, and Jacob refused to be the next.
