"C-can I be excused today? I'm n-not feeling too good." Mai stated acting pitiful and sick. She always do this to her teacher and her guardian but escape something she didn't want to do.

But Naru just glare at her, seeing through her act. Seeing how everybody just stare at her in silence, Mai began feeling awkward and strode to Naru to whisper something. She quietly pull his sleeves and quietly muttered words on his ears.

"Naru, I know what you're doing. This will not effect me in some way and will just ruin your experiment."

Naru was surprised but quickly recovered and pointed a chair in the corner for her to sit with a helpless sigh. That means she is excused. She didn't forget to shut the curtains for Naru, making the whole room dark.

The others especially the principal saw this and was confused a little bit but cooperates when Naru started instructing them. The only light in the room is the red glowing ball from the gear Naru had set. Naru stood behind a chair as he tells them what to do.

"Tonight, something is going to happen... The chair on the first floor in the old school building will move... Tonight, the chair placed in the laboratory in the old school building will move..."

Naru gave Mai a glance and the brunette quickly rush to the window and pulled the curtains open. At the sudden rush of bright light, all five people quickly woke up from their semi-conscious state.

"Thank you for your cooperation." Naru said making the others look at him— to be exact, look at the chair in front of him.

That means his experiment is a success.

"Man, I'm so sleepy."

"Me too."

The SPR irregulars went to the old school building after failing to convince Naru to tell them what was that about. Kuruda-san went to her own class while Mai followed Naru out of the main building.

"Don't you have classes?" Naru asked her seeing her out of the school.

"I am excused. Besides skipping a class or two won't affect my studies." Mai answered with a smug look on her face.

"Well, it's not my fault you'll become even more stupid."

"I am not stupid. Don't you know that I am first in the entrance exam and is CURRENTLY FIRST in our whole grade level?" Mai conceitedly rebut him and even show him three of her quizzes that had a 100-point-mark on top. It was given to her a while ago and as usual she's the number one.

"Whatever."

Naru gave up picking up on her and let her follow towards the old school building. The others are packing up stuffs that they set up yesterday. Since the second poltergeist phenomenon happened, Bou-san decided to at least set up a few gears to catch whatever it is to catch.

Naru went to get some equipment from the van and called for Mai and John to help him while Ayako and Bou-san do their own separate work.

When they arrived at the laboratory in the first floor, Mai saw a tall man wearing a white dress shirt and black trousers using a clutch to walk. She then recognized him as Naru's assistant who got injured on the first day.

She didn't noticed before since she was so focused on his injury and rushed him to the nearby clinic, but she can sense an immense energy coming from that man. It was the same as the energy she felt and saw when she met martial artists.

But what is more amazing in that man was his five shikis and and his precious right eye that was covered by his fringe. She didn't noticed it at first but seeing him struggle to walk and with his fringe shaking, she had a glimpse of his eye.

"Mai, what are dazing of for? Get to work!"

Hearing her boss' annoyed vice, she quickly went to John's side to set up the camera while Naru and Lin set up the radar. But she didn't forget to observe the tall guy secretly while working. She can tell something is wrong with his eyes.

Can he see ghosts with his right eyes that he always cover it? Oh! I heard someone who has electromagnetic vision is working for BSPR as a technician. Is he that 'someone'? That means if he uses that eye, he can see energies like me?

Mai stood up after they finished setting up the infrared camera on the tripod. She saw Naru drew a circle around the chair he had put on the center of the room and adjust the angle of the camera.

She suddenly turned around and she was almost startled when one of Lin's familiars came her face. She almost show surprise and panic but thankfully she remain calm and pass through the shiki that is in the form of a comet-like figure. She felt very cold after touching the shiki but walked to Naru as if nothing ever happened.

Blast it! That was so close. He knew I was observing him and was testing me. Those shikis are hard to avoid! This man is so dangerous!

"Mai, cover up all the windows in the lab with the veneer boards there." Naru ordered her, making John jumped.

"Roger that."

"U-uhm, Mai. Maybe I'll do that instead of you. You're a girl and you shouldn't be doing heavy jobs like this." John proposed completely worried for the girl making the latter chuckle in joy.

"Come on, John. You're treating me like a little girl! Don't worry, I'm strong you know?" Mai answered with a laugh while picking up a board and a hammer. John followed suit and held the board for her.

"I have been doing community services with the army and the police department for almost ten years now. And do I need to remind you who put a hole on the wall on the first poltergeist activity for us to escape?" Mai continued while hammering like a professional. John sighed in relief and assisted her.

"Wait. You said do community services with the Army and police department?" John asked in a surprised tone.

Crap. I spoke too much.

"Y-yeah. My dad is a military officer and I live with him in the barracks when I was a child." Mai answered, slightly embarrassed. She is still working while the shiki is still filling her and observing her. She had passed through it numerous time now and she is having a hard time not shivering every time that happened.

I was suddenly thankful for the harsh training I received from my military father. Little thing, please leave me alone!

"You live in a military barrack? That means you're sleeping with so many men soldiers there?" John asked with worry still not erased in his tone.

"Don't worry! My father happen to snatch a room for ourselves and those uncles and big brothers are kind to me and won't do me harm."

More like he used me to have the largest room in the barracks. Come to think of it. How and where is he now? I better call him later.

"Besides, my dad's work made him so busy and will be transferring to one place in another. That will inconvenience my learning so we bought an apartment near the school for me to live in." Mai explained seeing the priest's worries and panicked face.

"Is that so? I'm relieved." The priest sighed in relief but his worried face came back after a few seconds making Mai flinch again.

"But that means you're living alone."

Man. This priest is so much of a saint that I worry for him. No, not a saint. He's more like an angel adding his appearance in the image.

"I am okay, John. And don't worry about my expenses. Naru there is paying me for this job." Mai answered, easing all the priest's worries for her.

They didn't noticed a certain stoic man glaring at his charge after he heard the name Mai called her boss. Naru just sighed at him and signaled him to be quiet for a moment and will be explaining later.

Mai finished sealing up the place and was currently outside the sealed room, signing their names on the wall and the paper that Naru had pasted. The two went home together after that, leaving Naru to handle the issue with Lin.

"Don't worry about her. She's just a highschool girl. She didn't and won't notice anything." Naru said after explaining the thing about his nickname

"You better. And be careful around that girl. She practiced martial arts and I noticed her observing me while working." Lin notified the young man and sighed.

"What do you mean?"

"I noticed her look at my familiars for a second after entering the room. I don't if she really saw it or just surprised to see a new person but she had began observing me since then."

"That was just her nature. She is smart and will be suspicious but—"

"But that also means we have a high possibility of being discovered. Bou-san and the others already knew who you are and agreed to keep it a secret to protect you. We can't have another person risking another identity reveal." Lin scolded him.

Naru sighed and nodded at him. His thought of hiring the brunette to the company was decided to be postponed for a while. Seeing the man's reaction, even if he go on his way and really hired the girl, he won't be having a good and peaceful life while having Lin hold a grudge against him.

Naru called everyone in the old schoolhouse the next morning and destroyed the wall Mai and John built up after having them confirm that nothing is wrong with their signatures. They saw that the chair was lying in the corner of the room instead of it's initial position inside the circle. John was stunned by this and followed Naru who showed them his laptop screen.

In that screen show the chair still located on the circle. A seconds later, it visibly wobble and was suddenly levitate a few inches from the floor before it was thrown to the corner. Everyone was stunned by this fleeting event.

"Oh my gosh! It moved!"

"I knew there are spirits here!"

Lin, who is filming what happened stood still while his shikis continued to bother Mai who is patiently forcing herself to act normal. She even pretended to be be shocked after they saw the footage.

T_T.. Come on. Please leave me alone already! Big boss, please take these familiars away from me! I am begging you!

Mai lamented inside of her while acting so normal. She was feeling so cold as the shikis passed through her back and forth. In the end, she shivered.

"I-it's it just me or it's really getting chilly here?" Mai asked as she hugged herself. She was really really cold but she acted as if the wind just blew by. He situation is more serious than she had displayed.

I swear he must've hated me from injuring him—not that it's entirely my fault! He must've been doing this to revenge against me! Trust me, Lin-san, I will remember this day!

Naru ignored her complaint and turned to the SPR irregulars and Kuruda-san for him to explain the situation. Bou-san kind-heartedly handed Mai his jacket and Mai noticed that those shikis finally went back to their master.

"Thank you everyone. This concludes my experiment." Naru announced with a satisfied smirk on his face.

"What is it, Naru? Did you solve it?" Bou-san asked with an excited look.

"Yes. I concluded that there are no spirits here and there is no need for exorcisms." Naru answered, shutting his laptop down.

"What?! That is impossible! We clearly have those poltergeist activities! Don't you dare deny it!" Ayako responded in an irritated tone.

"Everything that had happened until Mai was attacked and except with John's incident was caused by land subsidence. The others are caused by poltergeist." Naru answered her, voice is still calm.

"That doesn't make sense."

"The video you saw a while ago is the result of my experiment. The one that I had done in the principal's office. I performed an autosuggestion to all of you yesterday that this chair will move last night. All of the windows, doors and all openings are all covered in veneer boards and no one couldn't have break in to tamper this scene since John and Mai confirmed that nothing had been altered and changed I their signatures written on the boards. So the event that happened here last night is a poltergeist"

"Then we have to start the exorcism! And what do your autosuggestion or whatever have to do with all of these?" Ayako asked him, a bit calmer than before.

"Half of all poltergeist cases are attributable to humans. "

"Like pranks?" Ayako asked him while John and Bou-san started to piece up things.

"No. It is a type of energy that humans have. Most of the cases happen subconsciously. For example, when someone is stressed out. He or she craves for attention and wants to be noticed. His or her stress build up energy as he or she continued to be depressed. These kind of energy can cause poltergeist cases but cannot be ruled out as a work of spirit."

"Autosuggestion is similar to hypnotism. I ordered your subconscious mind to move this chair and the moment you laid eyes on this chair after the session shows that my experiment is a success. This also means that someone among you is causing this poltergeist activities." Naru finished and looked at the highschool girl standing opposite to Mai.

The others who realized things also look at the young girl as the latter stared at them, looking so stunned and confused.

"M-me? A-are you trying to say I did it?!" Kuruda-san asked after recovering from shock but her speech still stammered as she asked for an explanation.

"Among everyone else in this room, it was safe to assume that it was you. I had the feeling from the very beginning that this had something to do with you. For example, when we first met, you said that you can see spirits from the war in this building."

"However there is nothing that can be served as a proof that this school was attacked or used as a hospital during the war. Not even a trace that there is a hospital near here at that time. It is what obvious that you're reading too much into it. In other words, you're simply lying."

"I am not making things up! I—" Kuruda-san tried to deny but stopped when her conscience acted up.

"I knew that the case of this building is nothing out of ordinary and I was honestly perplexed we experienced events that are poltergeist-like. Despite the fact that my recordings clearly shows that there are no spirits here and with Hara-san's evaluation of the building. So this started my theory of having a human being causing the events."

"This was commonly applies to young teens, young children and female psychics. Often individuals under extreme stress end up causing something like this and the person causing the poltergeist become the victim of the poltergeist to satisfy their desire of getting attention. If these cases happened in a household, the suspects will be the inhabitants but in this particular case where no one lives here, who could me the most likely suspects?" Naru asked and crossed his arms, his serious stare suddenly made Mai a bit edgy.

I suddenly have a bad feeling.

"It could be Kuruda-san and Jou-chan." Bou-san answered giving the two highschool girls a meaningful gazes.

"That is correct. They fit the criteria of having the possibility to cause poltergeist."

"But Taniyama-san didn't participate in the autosuggestion." Kuruda-san inserted, still uncomfortable with the fellow student.

"I didn't participate because I already know what he is going to do and I would ruin the experiment if I had joined. And to save you from asking, I saw some uncles in the military do this experiment to test out serial killers to check if they have supernatural power or not. " Mai answered them in a steady voice, not noticing the shock on their faces when she said 'serial killers'.

"I had gathered information from students who knew Mai and Kuruda-san. They said Mai had been treated as a problem student eversince junior high while Kuruda-san is famous for having the ability to see ghosts. The two of them were both idolised and criticized. But when you compare the two, Kuruda-san is the one using her 'psychic abilities' to out attention to herself unlike Mai who got infamous because of gossips."

Mai shivered every time she heard something about herself and she guessed Naru got all of these information from her friends, Keiko and Michiru since they knew about her and Kuruda-san.

"So what would happen if the building she claimed as 'haunted' because of some events was ruled out as a work of Land Subsidence? She would be disdained and would be alone again. She would lose her status and will be terrified of what it will bring. Her unconscious state of mind would be under great pressure and her mind would start thinking negative things and her unconscious mind will start on its own." Naru explained further as they listen to him, especially Kuruda-san who is the subject of the matter.

"So you proposed the Land Subsidence theory to see if you're thoughts are true?" Bou-san asked.

"Yes."

"Wait! If she panicked that she will be busted when you propose the Land Subsidence theory, what happened to Mai then? That incident is clearly a poltergeist! She was pushed!" Ayako asked as Naru looked at Mai who sighed in defeat.

"I might've scared Kuruda-san when I declined her request of being introduced to Naru. Coupled with my infamous background, she might have thought I would hurt her so she unconsciously released energy to push me down the stairs to get rid of me." Mai answered making the fellow student panicked.

"N-no! I-I didn't mean it! I swear!" Kuruda-san defend herself in fear.

"Calm down if you don't wanna cause a poltergeist activity again. I promise I wouldn't hurt you, okay?" Mai said in a flat tone, sighing helplessly but it somehow made the teenager calm down.

"Kuruda-san, you might not be aware of this but you probably have some level of PK." Naru announced making the former blush at the compliment while he look at Mai at the same moment. He was about to speak when Mai showed five of her fingers to stop him from speaking.

"Stop! I know what you're going to say! PK is short for Psychokinesis. It is the ability to move objects without touching it." Mai said while her palm covers her face. She had a feeling this would happen. Her instincts really never go wrong.

"Correct. I am surprised you have a brain bigger than a monkey."

"Hey! May I remind you again who top the highschool entrance exams?!" Mai lashed out and point angrily at him.

"Wait! I still have questions to ask! What about me being locked up and what about the footage being static?" Ayako asked still not convinced.

"The base is left alone most of the time and Kuruda-san has plenty of time erasing the footages and as for the incident of you being locked up, it is caused by a nail stuck on the doorsill. It's tiny but it's enough to get the door stuck. " Naru answered, taking out a nail out of his pocket.

"A nail?!" Ayako asked and snatched it from Naru's hand.

"It's you, isn't it?!" She asked Kuruda-san next, who is clearly guilty.

Mai, on the other hand, watched them curiously since she wasn't present at the time that happened. She is then reminded of how she locked up her daycare teacher using the same method.

"I think it's a revenge prank after how unpleasant you act on your first meeting but that solves this case and we are ready to leave. I hope everything is clear now?" Naru asked them as they shake their head.

"Now, what do we tell the principal?" Bou-san asked.

"We just had to tell him that we exorcised the spirits of the dead soldiers and that the building was cleanse of evil spirits."

"But wouldn't that be lying to the principal? He at least deserves to know the truth." Masako, who hadn't spoken all this time, voices her opinion.

"Yes. But Kuruda-san is trying to cope with her stress right now and telling the truth will add pressure to her and would cause further difficulties in the future." Naru answered her making the others smirk mischievously.

"Oh my, oh my. Is Kazuya-kun being gentle today? What happened?" Bou-san and Ayako asked in a mocking tone only to be glared at by their boss.

"I don't want the principal to give us a low rating if Kuruda-san cause troubles because of stress. I may be like this but I don't want repeat working here again." Naru answered and start packing.

Kuruda-san couldn't bear to face anyone at the moment and hung her head down in guilt. She suddenly felt a tap on her shoulder and turned around only to find Mai's neutral face near hers. She was freaked out and scared but she was held by her before she even laid out a plan to escape.

"Hey. If you ever got lonely, you can go to Keiko and Michiru who is in the same class as you. They were great friends as long as you are honest to yourself and to them. You can tell them all of what happened, they will listen to you. They love listening to gossips but they don't spread others' secrets." Mai said having a small sweet smile on her face. A genuine smile and not the scary smile she had seen they day she threatened Mai. And it was because of her friends.

Kuruda-san calmed down and nodded, feeling a bit comfortable with Mai but she tense up when the other brunette's face suddenly got serious.

"And be careful of what you say. Think first before acting out. This is confidential but I'll tell you this. I hope you remain silent about this. More than 10 years ago, the military discovered an illegal underground research center in the suburbs. The suspect is a crazy scientist wanting to learn more about psychic abilities. Those children, rumoured psychics or real psychics alike are kidnapped and been cruelly experimented on." Mai whispered and show a picture of a military report on her phone.

There are also pictures of the scene and those children. They're weak, malnourished and was in a brink of death! Kuruda-san was scared and stunned as she read through the words printed. Mai took it away after a while and tap her shoulders again.

"This happened long ago but it doesn't mean it cannot happen now. There are many crazy people in the world. Be careful of saying things about yourself. It may dig you own grave one day. Consider this as a warning and a gift from me for you own sake." Mai said and went to help Naru and Lin.

No one knew what they talked about but Kuruda-san promised to herself that she will really change for her safety and her future self. She was still scared of Mai but she knew she was a bit kind to warn her like that even if they aren't friends or something. Her whole impression of Mai changed completely. She went to her class and left the old school building behind.

"Not going to class again?" Naru asked Mai as she handed him the last box.

"No. I hand in all my homeworks and papers yesterday and was allowed to take a day off the school today."

"I am really doubtful on how you even get the top rank."

"Hah! You're just jealous, Naru."

"Why would I? I am obviously more smart and good-looking than you."

"Narcissistic jerk! Humph!"

"Mai! I am a bit curious since a while ago but what does Naru mean when he said you're a bit troublesome since junior high? Did you get into fights?" Bou-san asked her, not really believing what he himself had said.

"Yeah. There are rumours that I had been sent to jail for beating up people but in truth, they are all thugs to disrupts peace around the area. I always brought them to the police station after I had beaten the crap out of all of them." Mai answers with a wide uncanny smile on her face.

"Whoa! I didn't know that you're so strong despite your small physique."

"Of course! I train with so many muscle-headed guys as I grew up!" Mai answered proudly but was mocked by a certain kimono-clad girl who is just around the same age as she.

"Ah. So that's why you're also muscle-headed."

"Hey! That's rude!" Mai answered not knowing why the girl is a bit hostile to her.

"Geez. Naru and this chick is really alike not only on their hair colour but also in attitude. You sure you two are not related or something?" Mai asked sarcastically and heard her phone ring.

This chick... How crude...

"No. They're not blood-related or something. But before I forgot, let me take your number. Let's meet up in a cafe or something!" Bou-san said also bring out his phone. John and Ayako also didn't lose the opportunity and exchange numbers with Mai.

"Alright! I need to go. I have to pick up a package in the police station. Naru dear, remember to pay me up! You have my number, don't you?" Mai asked stretching her right hand for a handshake.

"Yes." Naru answered and accepted her hand. Mai shook hands with him and smile wider as she thought of something. Naru, who saw her uncanny smile took his hand back and stepped a few feet away.

What is she planning?

"And next time you scam a girl to get a free work out of her, please don't use an insured camera as an excuse. You're so embarrassing." Mai said and quickly ran away from him.

Naru's face went livid as she watch her walk away in a good mood. But his darkened countenance was quickly replaced by a smirk when he heard her him a song. She is not skipping or dancing as she usually do when in a good mood but he knew what will happen next. Mai let out a 'Kyaah!' as she tripped on in the sidewalk. And no one, except Masako and Lin, saw how a genuine and happy crept on Naru's face.
