The Truth Behind the Light
Chapter 8
Previous Chapter: "Come on. Uncle Severus is waiting at the staff entrance for us." Draco stated, nudging his cousin to regain his attention. Harry quickly nodded, standing up from the bench. He smiled when he saw Zia was already standing with his dad.
"Harry, Zia I have already taken the liberate of having Tilly arrange for you both to have proper clothes ready in your rooms at Prince Manor so there will be no need to them with you. You are more than welcome to bring anything else along that you want but know that everything you need will already be taken care of." Severus stated as they walked down towards the dungeons. Harry quickly walked beside his father, his stomach bubbling with excitement at the thought of not having to hide that his Head of House was his father. Severus glanced down at him, a small smile gracing his face as he saw the clear joy in his son's green eyes.
When they reached his quarters Zia glanced around, amazing at the warm and welcoming feeling. Harry gave her a grin as Severus moved over to the fireplace.
"Zia, Harry as neither of you have travelled by Floo powder before this time I will go first, and Draco will go last. I want you to very clearly state Malfoy Manor." Severus explained, pulling the clay pot of Floo powder down from the mantle. Zia laughed when she noticed the baby handprints on the pot, figuring they were Harry's since the Potions' master didn't have any other children. Harry shot her a glare, a blush appearing on his cheeks before he followed his father through the fireplace.
When he stepped out into the large and elegant sitting room he stopped, looking around in shock. The room was done in a rich green color with silver wall trimmings. He quickly jumped out of the way when Zia came tumbling out of the fireplace, nearly colliding with him. The young Prince glanced up when he heard his father's laugh. Severus stood in the doorway with Narcissa and Lucius, an amused smirk on his face. Harry blushed when Lady Malfoy suddenly rushed forward and pulled him into her arms.
"I am so happy you are here Harry. We have missed you so much." She whispered.
Continuation: Harry froze for a moment before he reached up, returning the hug from the woman he knew to be his aunt. He glanced over his shoulder at Draco when he heard the laugh the escaped his cousin's mouth, giving him a playful glare. Zia couldn't help but glance around the room, amazed by the amazing sculpt work, carefully walking around to get a closer look at several of the paintings. Her eyes caught the slightest movement outside, watching as another girl skated gracefully across the ice. Severus rested his hands on his son's shoulder once Narcissa had released him from her grip. Harry laughed when she instead turned her attention to her own son. Draco shot him a glare as his mother pressed kisses to his forehead.
"She looks so beautiful." Zia whispered, pressing her hands against the window as she continued to watch the skater. Severus glanced up, turning his attention to looking out the window. He glanced at his brother-in-law with a raised eyebrow when he realized just who the girl was.
"I thought she was still in France with her mother." He commented, led the twins out of the greeting room.
"Marvolo wanted to spend Yule with the both of them which is why we're hosting the Malfoy Yule for the Ministry here three days before Yule. He is having a Yule ball the night before that everyone is attending." Lucius explained as they walked through the manor hallways. Harry suddenly flinched as a sharp pain went through his scar, causing his steps to falter. Severus placed his hand on his son's shoulder to keep him standing, looking down at him with a concerned look in his eyes.
"Harry? Are you alright?" he questioned, only earning a small nod from the 11-year-old. The two families had barely stepped into the dining hall where lunch was being served when Harry felt his legs give out from underneath him, sending him tumbling to the floor. Draco and Zia both released startled gasps, moving to his side. Severus easily scooped his son into his arms carrying him over to the table. Narcissa called for one of the house elves to fetch a glass of water and one of the pain potions Severus kept on hand. Harry's green eyes were squeezed shut as he tried to block out the pain.
"What is going on?" A soft, angelic voice questioned gaining Severus' attention. Marvolo had just stepped into the dining hall with a blonde-haired woman on his arm. Harry released another pained whimper, quickly regaining his father's attention. The small boy raised his shaking hand to his scar, rub at it in an attempt to ease the pain. Severus easily grabbed his hand in his own to stop him from irritating the lightening bolt scar anymore than it clearly already was. The glass of water and potion's vial appeared on the table in front of them.
"Harry you're not going to like it, but I need you to drink this for me." Severus stated as he held the glass vial to his son's lips. Harry swallowed the liquid without any complaints, the pain only easing slightly. Once he was able to sit properly in his seat, Severus took the chair to his left. He noticed how Harry flinched when Marvolo sat at the head of the table across from Lucius.
"Severus is he okay?" the young woman questioned as she sat to her husband's left.
"I'm okay." Harry whispered, rubbing his head with the palm of his hand for a moment before he turned his attention to the table. He slowly reached up to grab one of the sandwiches, his stomach feeling like it was doing summersaults. Severus frowned slightly as he reached over and felt his son's forehead. Harry leaned into his father's touch, closing his eyes.
"Why don't you try and eat your sandwich than you can take a nap?" The potion's master suggested. Harry managed a small nod before he picked up the sandwich. The five adults all shared a concerned look before returning to their own lunch. Harry barely managed to finish his sandwich before he felt the need to throw up what little contents his stomach held. Severus glanced up when his son released a whimper, realizing he had his hand covering his mouth, his green eyes wide. Narcissa quickly moved to her nephew's side, easily picking the eleven-year-old once Lucius had cast a feather light charm on him. The Lady Malfoy hurried from the room. Draco watched his mother's retreating back.
"Harry was fine this morning before we left the castle." The blonde haired Slytherin replied, glancing at his godfather. Marvolo frowned as he glanced at his two closest friends, attempting to figure out what had caused young Harry's obvious discomfort. Severus excused himself to go check on his son, figuring Narcissa would have taken him to his room.
Narcissa glanced up from where she was sitting on the edge of Harry's bed when she heard the soft knock on the door. Severus stepped into the Slytherin colored room, frowning when he saw Harry was curled up in the center of the bed with his aunt running her fingers through his hair. He groaned in obvious discomfort as he shifted under the blanket.
"I gave him a stomach soother, but I didn't want to give him anything else without your permission." She explained as he got closer.
"Dad?" Harry whimpered, opening his eyes slightly. Severus knelt beside the bed, taking his son's outstretched hand.
"I'm sorry. This break was supposed to be fun…and I ruined it." Harry whispered, using his other hand to wipe the tears from his eyes.
"You haven't ruined anything. It's only the first day of your break. Mrs. Malfoy already gave you a potion that will make you feel better. So just get some rest and I'll come see how you're feeling when dinner is ready okay?" Severus stated, earning a small smile from his son. Narcissa stood up from the bed, straightening her robes before she slipped out of the room to give the father and son a moment. She reached up to brush some of her hair out of her face, pulling her wand from her pocket. She had barely waved it to fix her hair when Severus stepped out of the room.
"Thank you Narcissa. I think Lucius and Marvolo have retired to the study. It seemed like Lord Slytherin wanted to speak to us about something at lunch." He explained, earning a nod from the Lady of the Manor. They walked through the hallways towards Lucius private study where he took meetings. Marvolo glanced up from his glass of Fire whiskey when the two stepped into the study.
"Draco took Miss Potter out to the pond to show her how to skate with Maddison. How is Hadrian?" Marvolo questioned once Severus had sat down.
"Harry is okay. He's resting right now but I'm going to check on him again before dinner to see if he is going to be up to joining us." Severus explained. He sighed as he reached up to brush his hair out of his face, still attempting to figure out what had caused his son's sudden fatigue since he'd been fine when he'd woken up that morning. Marvolo offered his young wife a smile as she stepped into the study, walking to his side.
"Severus I don't remember if you've met my bride considering you and Bella were always busy with your missions before she went into hiding with Maddison, but this is Grace." He introduced. The blonde-haired beauty offered a smile as she sat on the arm of chair with her husband's hand resting on her waist.
"I noticed Harry didn't seem ill until my husband stepped into the dining hall. Perhaps your…headmaster created a charm of sorts to cause a reaction if the child was around the Dark Lord?" She suggested.
"I haven't allowed Harry to be alone with Headmaster Dumbledore long enough to let him place any kind of charm. But I don't think he knew that I was taking Harry or Zia away from Hogwarts for the Yule break." Severus stated. His frown deepened as he thought about that night at the Potters', knowing that Hagrid had taken the twins from the house on Dumbledore's orders. Lucius could clearly see the calculating look on his brother-in-law's face before he suddenly stood up from his chair. His black robes swept behind him as he exited the study, leaving all of them confused by his sudden departure.
After several hours Marvolo finally ventured down into the private potions' lab that Lucius had set up for Severus in the manor. He raised his hand to knock, watching his friend lean over an empty cauldron, his hands balled into fists. He knew firsthand that his friend was still hurting, remembering the pain they had all went through when they'd thought Hadrian had died. He'd looked at the newborn as a nephew, someone that he would get to see raised by two caring parents that loved him more than anything. Instead, Dumbledore had taken it upon himself once again to tear a family apart for his own benefit simply because he felt like it was for 'The Greater Good'.
"I know you're there Marvolo. You can come in." Severus suddenly called. He stood up straight, turning to walk back over to a desk that had multiple books opened to various pages.
"Have you gone to check on your son at all?" Marvolo questioned, stepping into the lab. He frowned when he received no response, knowing that Severus had been too deep into whatever he was working on. That was a problem the young potion's master had always had. His work had always distracted him from the things that were right in front of his face. He stepped over to the desk, looking down at the books in an attempt to understand just what it was Severus was attempting to work on.
"You think Harry has a potion that causes him pain if he's around my magical signature? Severus this is insane. How would Dumbledore have even managed that?" Marvolo stated, picking up one of the books. Severus only sighed, reaching up to bush his hair out of his face.
"I don't know what to think. Grace made that comment earlier about how it happened suddenly and only when you'd walked into the dining hall. He…he got so pale just all of the sudden and there was nothing I could do about it." Severus whispered, a defeated tone in his voice. He hated the feeling of not being able to help his child when he needed him the most. He glanced down at the wedding band that rested on his finger. Normally he kept the silver band hidden under a glamor, but the ring made him feel closer to his wife when she couldn't be with him. He took a deep breath before he turned his attention back to his research.
"I just know something is wrong and I need to figure out what it is." Severus stated, moving to turn back to the potion he'd been attempting to brew. His attention landed on the Lord ring that Marvolo wore, another idea suddenly coming to mind.
"What about the goblins? There healers are more advanced in the dark spells and potions. Do you think they would be willing to give Harry an exam? If I take him to St. Mungos they are going to inform Dumbledore since right now he is still classified as Harry's magical guardian." The potion's master stated, turning to face his friend with a look of hope.
"I can send a message to my bank manager and see if he can get it set up for later this afternoon. Now go check on your son." Marvolo stated, gesturing towards the door. Severus only nodded before he exited the potions lab, walking through the manor towards his son's room. Harry still laid curled up on his side in the center of his bed, his eyes closed tight with his hand clutching the pillow. He sighed as he closed the door, moving over to the bed. Harry shifted closer to his father when he felt the hand stroking his hair. He groaned slightly as he forced his eyes open, Severus gasping when he was greeted by the sight of the beautiful charcoal grey ones Harry had been born with.
"Dad?" he mumbled softly, shifting enough to rest his head on Severus' lap. Severus silently ran his fingers through his son's hair, his mind reeling as he stared down at the eyes he never thought he would get the chance to see again.
"I don't feel so good." Harry mumbled, attempting to curl his body into any even smaller ball, pulling the blanket up to his chin.
"It'll pass, I promise. For now, I just want you to relax and rest." Severus whispered. He eased Harry off his lap for a moment before he shifted to lie down beside the small body. Harry looked at him when he wandless summoned a book from the shelf on the far side of the room. He cuddled up closer to his father when he opened it, closing his eyes as he attempted to listen to the story. Before long he was lulled back to sleep by his father's deep voice.
"Lord Prince sir, Lady Malfoy asked me to inform you and Heir Hadrian that dinner is ready." A house elf stated, popping into the room. Severus glanced up at the small magical creature with a sigh, closing the book. He reached down to brush Harry's bangs out of his face. The 11-year-old groaned as he buried his face deeper into his father's side for a moment before he opened his eyes. Severus smiled when he was once again greeted by beautiful charcoal grey eyes.
"How are you feeling?" he questioned, watching as Harry yawned, pushing the blanket off.
"I feel better, not nearly as sick to my stomach as I did." He responded, offering his dad a small smile. Father and son walked through the hallways towards the dining hall. Harry couldn't help but look around amazed at all the decorations. He knew the Malfoy's were rich, but this was far beyond anything he'd ever expected. Severus couldn't help but flinch at his son's amazement, knowing that while he was an Heir to an Ancient and Noble line he knew nothing about what that meant.
"Harry there you are. I was worried you were going to be stuck in your room our entire visit." Zia stated a smile on her face when she saw her brother was in a better mood. She was sitting next to Maddison, the blonde-haired girl offering a kind smile. They all looked up when the doors opened, expecting Marvolo and Grace to walk in. Maddison frowned when her father didn't follow her mother in.
"Didn't stop enjoying your dinner on my account." Grace stated with a small smile as she took her normal seat at the left to the head of the table.
"Marvolo is still in his study sending out that letter that you asked of him Severus. He said he'd like to see you after you put the twins to bed but that he wouldn't be joining us for dinner." She stated, her soft voice holding a small amount of annoyance. Maddison knew that her parents had almost the perfect relationship. The only time she'd ever heard them argue about anything was when he got too busy with work or his plans.
Harry glanced at his father silently before he moved to sit beside Zia, figuring he was supposed to sit down with the rest of the kids. Draco smirked at his cousin when he took the seat next to him across from Maddison.
"I have heard many things about you Hadrian Prince. It is an honor to meet the son of one of my father's most trusted allies." Maddison stated, offered him a kind smile. Harry gulped slightly, unsure exactly how he was supposed to respond to someone that had an air of nobility around them. Zia glanced at her brother for a moment before she rolled her eyes with a fond smile. Dinner continued without any incidents aside from the occasional chiding from the adults about manners. Harry leaned back in his chair with a sigh, glancing down the table at his father. He sat up quickly when one of the house elves popped into the room beside the Potions Master holding a silver tray. Harry could clearly see the cream-colored parchment that held a red seal, instantly guessing that the Headmaster had figured out that they weren't still at Hogwarts. Lucius raised an eyebrow when Severus simply waved his wand, vanishing the letter without even bothering to open it.
"You don't think Professor Dumbledore is going to be furious with you for not answering him?" he questioned.
"I don't care if the old fool is angry with me. Perhaps if he hadn't kept my son from me for the past 10 years I wouldn't be so furious with him. Besides, I had permission from Professor McGonagall to take the twins away from Hogwarts for the holidays. If that is an issue to him than perhaps he needs to take it up with the Deputy Headmistress." Severus explained. He glanced down at the end of the table to the children, his black eyes connecting with his son's charcoal ones. He offered him a reassuring smile before he returned to his own conversation. Harry sighed before he relaxed, pushing his chair away from the table. He flinched when he gained the attention of everyone in the room.
"If you don't mind…I'm going to go back to my room." He requested, looking down at his feet.
"Are you sure Harry? It is still quite early in the evening and you've been sleeping for most of the day." Narcissa stated, offering her nephew a concerned glance. Harry glanced at his father with an unsure look on his face. He didn't want to offend anyone with not staying in the dining room, but he was nervous about being around anyone for long periods of time. Thankfully, Zia came to his rescue per normal, standing up from her own chair. She grabbed her brother's hand, giving him a reassuring smile before she turned her attention to the adults.
"We were going to work on a bit of our holiday homework if that was alright. We don't want to get behind since we have two Yule Balls to attend." She explained. Severus frowned for a moment but still gave them a nod of permission, excusing them both from the dining hall.
"Draco, why don't you run along with them? Perhaps the three of you could use the library." Lucius suggested, though his tone of voice made it seem more like a command. Draco simply nodded before he took a final bite of his meal, pushing his chair away from the table.
"Have a good night Heir Slytherin. Perhaps tomorrow we can all spend more time skating." He stated with a small smile before he followed his cousin from the room. Maddison sat in silence, staring after the trio with a faint blush on her cheeks. She quickly looked down at her mother when the Lady Slytherin stood up from her chair.
"I am going to inform my husband that he has had enough time in his study. Perhaps now that the children have left he will join us." Grace stated. She kissed her daughter's forehead on the way out. The blonde haired eleven-year-old sat in silence, unsure of what to do. Normally she would have already gone off to find something to entertain herself, but this wasn't her home.
"Maddison I'm sure Draco, Harry and Zia would enjoy your company. I can have one of the house elves show you where the library is." Narcissa stated, knowing that none of the children were actually working on homework. Severus always made sure his snakes had at least half of it done before leaving the castle and ravens always stayed ahead in their assignments simply, so they had time to go over them again before they were due.
_ Malfoy Library _
Harry sighed as he sat in one of the chairs, figuring there was a cushioning charm on them considering how comfortable they were. He had a book on old customs and traditions open in his lap. Zia was sitting at one of the tables closest to the fireplace with a book about some wizard charms while Draco sat beside her with his own book. Harry glanced over the top of his book, smiling at how close his sister and cousin had gotten in the short time they'd known each other. He couldn't help but think about that first day on the platform. He'd wondered many times if the Malfoys had already known who he was when they offered their help or had it simply been a coincidence. Draco had stood up for him when the Weasley boy had tried to force his opinions on him. Since he'd been sorted into Slytherin the only thing the youngest Weasley had done was hurl insults about his house.
"I hope you don't mind but Lady Malfoy gave me permission to join the three of you." A soft voice spoke from the doorway, gaining the trios attention. Maddison offered a kind smile before she moved further into the library. Her steps faltered when she caught sight of just how many books covered the shelves.
"I'm sorry I wasn't able to properly meet you when we first arrived." Harry stated, standing up from his seat. He held out his hand, holding his breath as he waited to see if she would take it or not. She simply smiled before she shook his hand.
"Mother and father informed me that you were feeling under the weather. I take it you are feeling better now?" she questioned. He quickly nodded, forgetting his words for a moment as he realized just how beautiful she was. Draco rolled his eyes at his cousin's silence, easily figuring he had no clue how to properly speak to a lady.
