Inside an Elementary School on Earth, morning
"Cut it out." Gohan hissed under his breath while glaring at the boy seated directly behind him. His fellow students, mainly the other young boys, had been pulling or flicking his tail all morning as they did most days. When the boy persisted Gohan's anger exploded. He rounded on his latest tormentor. "I said cut it out!"
"Gohan, what is the meaning of this outburst!?" The headmaster a stern older man with thinning silver hair and thick spectacles demanded to know.
"Um, nothing, Headmaster. Sorry, Headmaster, my tail is itchy." Gohan said causing the other students to laugh.
"Again?" The Headmaster signed. "One more outburst from you, young man, and you're suspended for a week, understand?"
"Understood," Gohan said slouching in his seat.
"And no slouching, sit up straight. Proper posture is important, young man." The Headmaster said sharply. He snapped his ruler down across Gohan's desk.
"Yes, Headmaster," Gohan said.
Gohan was resigned to another day of unrelenting torment and intellectual boredom at his new school. After almost two weeks spent there, Gohan decided he hated his new school. The other kids were so mean and most were stupid. Not for the first time, Gohan wished his grandfather and uncle had let him go to Namek. While he knew they were only honoring the wishes of his parents (especially his doting mother). His temporary guardians felt he should spend time with children his own age. They thought it would help keep his mind off the situation with his parents, or so Gohan suspected. He fervently wanted to be somewhere else, anywhere else, but here it was stuck. His only hope was that when his parents returned they would pull him out of school, until then he would do his best to endure he had no choice.
Outside during lunch break a few hours later, early afternoon
Gohan sat alone beneath a huge tree enjoying the substantial mid-day meal his grandfather had lovingly prepared for him as the Ox-King did every day. 'Grandpa sure is a good cook for a retired warrior." Gohan thought munching happily on an immense submarine sandwich nearly the size of his body. A few minutes later he was consuming half of a block worth of thick cheddar slices when he felt someone watching him. He looked up to see a dark-haired girl with pigtails staring at him intently with her pale blue eyes an unreadable expression on her face. Since the incessant questioning which turned into teasing he had received his first day about his tail, Gohan kept a respectable distance between him and the other children during lunch. Why was this girl violating his space? He should find out what she wanted.
"Hello," Gohan said warily.
"Are you a monkey boy? Everyone says you are." The pigtailed girl said.
"Yeah, I'm a monkey boy," Gohan said conforming to that designation. He felt it was easier if he accepted the moniker rather than explain what a Saiyan was. Earth possessed several groups of "animal people" and then there was Tien's three-eyed race but alien life was a notion most people could not or would next accept.
"Coolie," The pigtailed girl said clapping her hands with excitement. "Can you dangle from a tree using your tail like normal monkeys do? I saw monkeys once in the zoo. They are so cool. I wish I was a monkey sometimes or a monkey kid like you are. I mean you're a monkey boy, I'd be a monkey girl, not a monkey boy. Boys are icky." She babbled on for a while before asking another question or rather two wrapped in one. "Do you eat bananas, are they your favorite food?"
"No, I can't dangle from a tree using my tail because it wouldn't support my weight. Bananas are okay, but my favorite food is fish caught from the river and lakes near where I live." Gohan said answering her questions. Although he found her hyperactive nature a bit offputting it was still nice to have someone he could talk to who was not teasing him. "My name is Gohan. What is your name?"
"I'm Videl." The girl said smiling. "Do you want to be friends?"
"Sure, we can be friends, if you want, Videl?" Gohan said.
"Cool, we're friends now." Videl babbled. "Your cool for a boy. Must boys are dumb but your not dumb Gohan, you're cool."
"Thanks," Gohan said. Apparently 'cool' was her favorite word or one of them judging by her frequent use of it the always intuitive Gohan concluded. "I think you're cool too, Videl."
"Wow, you think I'm cool. You're so cool, Gohan." Videl said sitting down beside Gohan.
They spent the remainder of their meal chatting about nothing really just enjoying each other's company. It was a welcomed reprieve for Gohan. He enjoyed finally having a friend he could talk with rather than sit alone at mealtime.
'Maybe school will not be so bad,' Gohan thought.
Inside an hour later, afternoon
The tail puller was back. Gohan feeling there was no other choice consigned himself to another afternoon of discomfort. However, only two yanks came. Gohan heard a loud yelp of pain which was not his and then felt nothing more from his would-be bully.
"What is the meaning of this outburst!?" The Headmaster demanded of the tail puller using the boy's name.
"Nothing, Headmaster." The tail puller said rubbing his shoulders in obvious discomfort. "My seat pitched me."
"If it happens again, remain silent. I will not tolerate any further disruptions, understood?" The Headmaster said giving the tail puller a stern look.
"Yes, Headmaster," The tail puller said.
Gohan could not help but wonder what actually happened. As soon as he dared, she stole a few glances back at the tail puller. It did not take long for him to uncover the cause of the other boy's change of heart and his minor injury. Gohan's new friend the pigtail-wearing girl called Videl periodically punched the boy in his back glaring at him whenever he turned around. From that day forward, the tail puller left Gohan alone likewise his other tormentors.
A spaceship in orbit around Earth, that night
Turles commander of the mercenary force called the Crusher Corps sat in his command chair watching information flow in from the probe which landed on the planet their ship was orbiting. According to the information gathered, this world would make a perfect nursery for their precious seed. When the Tree Might matured it would bear fruit that could temporarily grant any who ate it power that would rival if not surpass Cold Family; a power which Turles vowed would be his and his alone to wield. With such immense power at his disposal, Turles knew that the Crusher Corps would sweep aside the Cold Empire and rule the universe unchallenged forever.
Although he did not know it, Turles bared an uncanny resemblance to Goku. Aside from their very different outlooks on life, the only thing that separated the pair from being twins was Turles' slightly darker coloration. Turles also possessed several prominent yet minor scars on his face and upper body from years of combat features that Goku lacked.
"The optimal implantation spot has been determined by our main computer." The second in command of the Crusher Corps, a bulky orange alien named Amond announced. "This planet is indeed well suited for our needs. So lush and full of life." He along with his fellows sat in a semicircle of control panels that surrounded Turles' centrally located position on the command bridge.
"Just as we suspected it would." Turles said. Smiling he rose from his seat. Like his five underlings, Turles wore Saiyan armor with the red plastic eyepiece of a scouter covering his right eye. Their only difference in attire was Turles' red cape. The cape flapped around him slightly whenever he walked. "We've wasted enough time conducting our survey. Implant the seed immediately."
"Yes, Commander Turles," Cacao a craggy red alien said. Outside of the ship, a metallic pod with the seed stowed inside whizzed away towards Earth.
"Once the seed has taken root, bring the ship in for a landing near its position." Turles ordered. "I sense this world is ripe for the picking. Apparently, the planet lacks defenders of any significance. We should encounter minimal resistance. But, we best guard our tree until it matures. Remaining cautious is always prudent until victory is assured."
"Yes, Commander Turles plotting course now." the dark-haired Daiz the navigator who appeared nearly human save for his pronounced forehead said. He punched in the proper coordinates which the ship followed a few minutes later.
"What fun," Rasin one of two squat light purple aliens with bulbous heads said.
"What fun indeed, brother," Lakasei the other squat light purple alien with a bulbous head said. Each of their voices filled with glee.
Turles silently observed the rapid descent of the ship under his command arms draped across his muscular chest. Soon no one would be able to stop them and their plans from realization. Not Frieza, not his brother Cooler, not even their feared father King Cold. Prepare universe a new era was about to dawn. An era ushered in by your new masters: Turles and his Crushers Corps!
The Great Northern Forest, night
The Tree of Might grew from a mere seedling into a tree of monstrous proportions within a few short hours. Its immense root system (each root being the size of a great oak) burrowed deeply into the crust of the planet. All across Earth other vegetation slowly withered away and died in a cascading effect from north to south. Lush woodland would become desert. Productive farms would become parched grassland. If this trend were to continue Earth would become a lifeless husk in a matter of days perhaps far less.
King Kai's Planet, afternoon
"Oh no," King Kai said his antennas twitching vigorously. The Z Fighters stopped their training disturbed by their mentor's state of distress.
"What's wrong, King Kai?" Chi Chi asked more than a bit concerned. None of them had ever seen the deity in any state of mind but a jovial one.
"Something awful," King Kai said confirming their worse fears. "A group of dastardly Space Pirates, of similar strength to Nappa and Vegeta, led by a renegade Saiyan Turles has planed a parasitic seed on your planet. If the tree that is growing from this seed isn't removed soon Earth will shrivel up and dead, drained of all its life force." The Z Fighters gasped. "The pirates aim to eat the fruit grown from this tree known as the Tree of Might to gain power rivaling Freiza and his family."
"King Kai, can you contact Mr. Popo?" Chi Chi asked following a pronounced silence.
"Yes, of course, I can contact him, quite readily in fact," King Kai said. "What message do you want me to convey to Mr. Popo, Chi Chi?"
"That he should gather the Dragon Balls and wish us back immediately. We're ready to return." Chi Chi answered.
"But what about dealing with Frieza? He's a pretty big threat too." Goku remained his wife.
"I know that." Chi Chi snapped. "Sorry, but, we have to protect Earth first and foremost, and more importantly our son."
"We should split up to deal with those Space Pirates." Tien offered. "One group will go home the other will head to Namek to deal with Frieza and his goons"
"Piccolo, Krillin, and Bulma are already on Namek so only one of us should go help them. Gohan is all alone." Yamcha suggested.
"Good idea," Chiaotzu readily agreed.
"I'll go to Namek." Goku volunteered. He knew full-well that he and Chi Chi were the two strongest combatants among the Dragon team members present. "I hate that we'll be apart but it's for the best." He gave Chi Chi a heartfelt hug a gesture she returned with vigor.
"Wait, the Earth Dragon Balls can't return me to life." Chiaotzu reminded his friends.
"That's right," Goku said after he and Chi Chi ended their long embrace which they topped off with a short kiss. "I guess you're coming to Namek with me, buddy."
"I guess so," Chiaotzu said not sure how he felt about the situation. He and Tien had not been a part (other than during his sort death) in many years.
"Don't worry, Chiaotzu. We'll be back together before we know it." Tien said.
"Promise?" Chiaotzu said growing misty-eyed.
"Cross my heart-," Tien began.
"And hope to die." Chiaotzu finished.
King Kai telepathically contacted Mr. Popo on the Lookout. After he explained the dire situation to the dark-skinned genie type entity, Mr. Popo informed King Kai who in turn informed the others that it would take a few hours at least before the Dragon Balls could be gathered. At present, only three of the wish-granting orbs were in Mr. Popo's possession.
"Earth needs protecting sooner rather than later." Chi Chi said unhappily. She was less than pleased by the latest news.
"You're right, Chi Chi," King Kai said.
"Maybe Mr. Roshi can help?" Goku suggested.
"No, Goku, Master Roshi isn't strong enough. He couldn't help us fight Vegeta and Nappa and these guys are of similar power." Chi Chi reminded Goku.
"I've got it," Goku said snapping his fingers. "We fight fire with fire. Nappa is pretty strong we can use him against the Space Pirates."
"Goku, are you out of your mind!? Yamcha shouted. "Nappa is just as dangerous."
"Yamcha has a point." Chi Chi said. "If Master Roshi does free him from the jar, how can we expect Nappa to cooperate?"
"Yeah, what would be in it for him?" Chiaotzu questioned.
"His freedom," Goku replied.
"Why won't he just fly off the moment he's let out and not bother helping us?" Tien asked skeptically.
"Easy peasy," Chi Chi said getting into the spirit of this once Goku flattered. His plan was a good one if it could be made to work. "He knows about the Dragon Balls. We lie, we tell Nappa we put a wish on him; he can't physically leave Earth until after he helps us defeat the Space Pirates, so fulfilling the conditions of the wish."
"Do you think he'll fall for it?" Tien asked still uncertain this plan would work.
Chi Chi shot him a come on now the guy is a moron look. "Yeah, I think he will. He did not come across as being clever to me far from it." She said.
"True," Tien conceded.
"Looks like we have a plan, people," Yamcha said excitedly.
"Let's hope it works," Tien said.
Everyone crossed their proverbial fingers and toes. They knew this would be an all or nothing affair. A roll of the dice on which everything depended.
