He'd been running. That was the last thing he remembered. James and his gang had been chasing him. That part had been like always. He was always being tormented by them.

It wasn't his fault his hair was greasy, he tried to wash it, but spending hours doing research in the lab made it that way. It wasn't his fault his father was the town drunk, that Severus himself was scrawny and malnourished. No, none of that mattered, James and his little gang liked to torment him anyway.

Severus had been walking home from school when they appeared.

"Whatcha doing Snivilus?"

"Nothing," Severus whispered, looking at the ground. His books were in his arms. James laughed, grabbing them. He threw them to Sirius, who caught them easily.

"Monkey in the middle, how droll," Severus muttered, jumping at his books. He'd almost reached them when Sirius threw them to Remus, who simply tossed them into the woods.

"It's getting late, let's get going," he said, leading James, Sirius, and Peter off. Severus sighed and walked into the forest to collect his books. They were laying in the middle of a bunch of mushrooms. He shook his head. He stepped over the white capped fungi and grabbed his books. That was the last thing he remembered until now.

The woods was different. That was his first thought. The trees were wrong, it was too bright. He put up a hand to shield his eyes. Everything felt wrong. He took a few stumbling steps. The ground was hard beneath his feet. He stepped out of the woods and his mouth dropped open. This was wrong, so very wrong.

The world was different. Everything Severus had remembered was different. The cars, they were sleeker. The lights were brighter. He stared, his eyes unable to believe what he was seeing. What had happened? He remembered stepping in the circle, grabbing his books. Then nothing...

Slowly he started walking, looking at the shops that had sprung up. The wares in the windows were strange. The clothing so different from anything he'd ever seen. He couldn't believe girls wore such things now. He glanced down at his own attire. Nice black slacks, a white button down shirt, a vest with his school emblem embroidered on it. He'd lost his tie.

He ran his fingers through his hair trying to figure out what to do. He caught sight of his reflection, he was still fifteen, still a scrawny looking kid with large nose and greasy hair. Around him the world rushed by.

"There you are! Mum was terribly worried we'd missed you," a girl's voice said. Severus spun around to find a girl standing there. She was wearing a pair of tight jeans and a flowy shirt with flowers on it. She was wearing sandals and a necklace with a strange symbol on it.

"Do I know you?"

"Nope. I'm Hermione. My mum manages the time travelers lodge. We rescue people who have traveled through time. Help them adjust and start new lives in this time, well, if we can't figure out how to get them home."

"Time travel."

"Yes! Let's see, you were lost about, I'd say the 1920's?"

"Yes, what year is it?" Severus asked, unable to take his eyes off this girl. She was smiling, her front teeth were slightly longer than her other ones, but it was cute. She seemed concerned about him and she wasn't calling him 'Snivlius', not yet anyway.

"1963! Do you have a name?"

"Severus, my name is Severus."

"Good, then I do have the right bloke. According to what I've read, you vanished one night on your way home from school. Your mum reported you missing, but you were never found. They interviewed some people, a James Potter, who admitted you'd gone into the woods. Everything sound right so far?" she asked.

"Yes, I went to get my books back, they landed in this circle of mushrooms. I don't remember anything after that."

"Sounds like a typical Fairy ring. Mum will want to make sure it's destroyed. Fairies are bad for everyone really. Oh, there's Mum!" Hermione said, waving to a woman. Severus turned and looked. The woman looked very much like Hermione and was dressed in a similar fashion.

"I found him, Mum. Fairy circle, like we suspected. He came out of the woods over there," Hermione sad, nodding to the woods.

"Good. Hello, Severus. I'm Janelle Granger, you've met my daughter Hermione. We're here to help you adjust to this time. I'm sorry but with Fairy circles, there's usually no return."

"That's fine, Ma'am. I wouldn't want to go back there anyway."

"People were mean to you?"

"Very."

"People haven't changed much then," Hermione muttered. "But that's alright. You're safe with us now. Let's go get something to eat and then we'll take you to our home and see about getting you set up in this time. Do you want to keep your name? We could get you a new one, since Severus Snape is listed as dead. I mean, it's been fortyish years..."

"Dear."

"Sorry, Mum."

"No, it's fine. I'd like to stay Severus, but maybe a different surname? Something less common? I'd like to blend in."

"Sure, we can do that. Alright, food and then home. Don't worry, Severus, I think you're going to like this time."

Severus looked at Hermione, who smiled back at him. He could see the friendliness in her eyes, the way her nose crinkled when she smiled. She was cute, she seemed to be interested in being friends with him at least. One friend in this time was more than he'd had in his own. Maybe he was going to like this new time after all?
