Ghosts Of Days Gone By
One Less Problem
"I can't believe that you called Vince and filed a harassment complaint against Summer. How could you do something like that?"
"Summer has been nothing but a nuisance since the first day I met her. She has people fooled into thinking she's actually a good person, but I see right through that act. She is trying to steal you away from me."
Adam ran a hand through his hair. "You're just paranoid."
"You're acting just like Punk did before he decided to break up with me. It was always Summer this…. Summer that…. Summer helped me do this….Summer helped me do that."
"Have you ever thought that maybe Punk broke up with you because he was tired of your attitude? There's a reason he called you a douchebag."
"Excuse me?" Beth scoffed. "I do not have an attitude problem. And what makes you think you can talk to me like that? I'm your wife."
"Let's be real…" Adam started. "You're not a good person."
"How can you say that? I have been by your side for almost the last ten years."
"You were the one who was so hesitant about me making my return to the ring. You never once provided the encouragement and support that every good wife should provide their Husband."
"You can say that if it helps you sleep at night. We both know you're only with me out of convenience. Summer has always been the one who's been the apple of your eye for the last ten years. You're still in love with her."
Adam ran a hand down his face. "I'm sick of this. I'm so sick of this!"
"I'm sick too. I'm sick of knowing that I'll always come second place to that blonde bitch. There is not a damn thing special about her!"
The Rated R Superstar pursed his lips and put his hand on his hip. "You always bring up Summer. You want to talk about her, so let's talk about her. You want to know what makes Summer special? She actually cares about people. If someone needs her, she is right there at their beck and call. That is why she's everyone's favorite McMahon. She's a good confidant and is always willingly to help out in any way that she can. She has that sophistication and grace that is unmatched." If Adam was being real with himself, he could go on and on about Summer and the great things about her.
The Glamazon frowned. "You still don't see it."
"See what?"
"You're in love with Summer."
Adam ran a hand through his hair. Has he been in love with Summer the whole time? Sure, she cared about her. Yes, he felt the need to defend her honor whenever someone talked badly about her. Yep, he wanted nothing more than to interact with her anytime he saw her. And he felt horrible anytime he was mean to her. Okay that was the definition of being in love with someone. Reality just came and slapped him hard in the face.
"Beth, I want a divorce…"
Summer was sitting in Vince's office at the WWE Headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut. He wanted to check on the status of his youngest daughter. "Summer, how was your vacation?" Vince wondered. "I hoped you thought about what you did."
"There was nothing for me to think about. I didn't do anything."
"I see you're still in denial about what you did."
"Dad, for the hundredth time, I didn't do anything!"
"Do I need to give extended time off; this time without pay?"
Summer scoffed. "I don't believe this! I didn't do anything! I found out it was Beth Phoenix who said something to you. How could you even believe that garbage?"
"I have seen you get mighty close with Edge in recent months. Maybe he didn't want you around and said something to Beth and that's why she called me."
"Dad, you were the one who put me in charge of the Edge and Randy Orton feud. It had no choice but to interact with Edge so we could do our jobs," Summer argued.
"I think that was a mistake," Vince replied. "I didn't realize there would be so much drama and unprofessionalism."
"There's only drama because of Edge's wife. She is doing whatever she can to ensure that I am nowhere near her Husband. That's why she accused me of harassing Edge. She was hoping you would fire me so I wouldn't have to work with her beloved Husband."
"I don't believe that for one second, Summer. I think that you just have these wild ideas running through your mind."
Summer scoffed. "These are not ideations Dad. Beth literally said these things to me."
"Until you can clear your mind, I am extending your time off, this time without pay."
"You know what, Dad? I'll do you one better: I quit!" She stood up straight and put her hands on her hips. "I am so done with trying. I obviously can't do nothing right by you."
"Be a quitter! That's what you do best!" Vince exclaimed.
Summer left Vince's office, tears in her eyes. These past twenty-four hours have not been kind to her. She wanted to fall off the face of the Earth. Maybe that was what she needed to do in order to find some solace.
After a very long day, Adam was sitting in his bedroom alone. There were no signs of Beth's belongings lingering in there. Scrolling through his phone, he found the person he wanted to contact. He held up the phone and pressed it to his ear.
"Vincent Kennedy McMahon here."
"Vince, Mr McMahon, it's me Adam, Edge."
"Adam! To what do I owe the pleasure? How's everything going?"
"I have had better days to say the least. But, I want to call and clear the air. I found out that Beth was the one who accused Summer of harassment. I wanted to let you know that I did not ask her to call you, I even had no idea that she had done that. I think she did that so I would be nowhere near Summer."
"So, you're telling me that you had no idea that happened? Beth said you were the one who put her up to that."
"Sir, she lied. I didn't tell her to do anything. She did that on her own accord."
"Summer hasn't done anything inappropriate; has she?" The Chairman wondered.
"Not at all. Summer has been nothing but professional, but that's nothing new."
"Summer tried telling me what happened, but I wouldn't listen. I just thought she was coming up with excuses and lies to cover up what she did."
"With all due respect: Summer is someone you should never doubt. She is usually the one who ends up telling the truth." Adam would know about that from personal experience.
"I'm starting to realize that. I may have been too harsh on her."
"There have been times you have been way too harsh on her and made her feel inferior," Adam said. "I think you should apologize to her."
"We both know that apologizing isn't my specialty, but I should make an exception for Summer."
"I think you should. It would mean a lot to her if you did."
"Adam, I just want to thank you for calling and clearing the air. You have always been a stand up guy," Vince complimented. "I don't give out compliments often, so you should know that you have earned my utmost respect."
"That means a lot to me."
"Hopefully I'll hear from you again at some point." That was the last thing Vince said to Adam before ending the phone call.
The Rated R Superstar laid back on the bed. He hoped that Summer would get the message about what he told Vince and at least talk to him. Cause he wanted nothing more at this point than to be in the presence of Summer. He ached to have an interaction with her.
