Chapter 15 Cop Talk

"

The two police detectives climbed into their navy blue Crown Vic and sat there for a few moments.

"What do you think?" Ambrose looked over at his partner with his pale almost colorless blue eyes.

Sprague shrugged.

"I think we are going to have a hell of a time trying to prove she put the crucifix in Delaney's hands."

"Delaney says she gave it to him because he promised to recant his statement against the Sons," Ambrose reminded him.

"Doesn't matter what Delaney says. He's a documented liar and he's admitted to killing the nurse. Suppose she gave him the cross; I don't think she would do that if she knew it concealed a weapon. We're also going to have a hell of a time proving that she knew about Delaney's statement because we're going to need someone to testify that Dr. Knowles knew about Delaney's statement. Teller will lie and say he never discussed MC business with her."

Ambrose flipped through his notebook.

"We can go talk to Gemma Teller. She was the friend of Delaney's wife Luann. Maybe she doesn't like her daughter-in law too much and she has some information that might be useful."

Sprague gave a snort of laughter.

"Gemma Teller is a long time old lady. She knows the drill. I doubt she'll talk to us."

"Whether or not she talks to us, word will get around to Dr. Knowles. It will help us increase the pressure on her," Ambrose said.

"Contraband gets into prison all the time. Who the hell knows how the cross got into Delaney's hands. Even if Knowles gave the cross to Delaney, what's really the point of this? The nurse is dead and at most Knowles is looking at some minor slap on the wrist," Sprague said.

"That's not the end goal. We're going to squeeze the hell out of Knowles, convince her she's going to be doing real time in prison and then they'll offer to cut her a deal if she'll rat her husband," Ambrose said.

"Yeah, I know what the end game with Knowles is. I just don't feel good about it. I'm OK with cutting corners and putting pressure on people to get scumbags off the street, but I don't feel good about what we're doing here," Sprague said.

"We're trying to get a higher caliber of scumbag off the street. It's widely known that the Sons sell guns. Think of the number of people those guns have killed.

"If we get Knowles softened up and they get her to roll over on Teller, we can take down a motorcycle club and its charters. We'll be legends," Ambrose said. His eyes lit up at the idea. He would ride this case to a book deal and speaking engagements.

"And we'll get a lot of scumbags off the street," Sprague said with mock virtuousness.

"Look, Dr. Knowles knows what Teller's all about. She knows he's a criminal and she's covering for him. That makes her just as guilty in my book. She's not this innocent victim. She's part of this criminal enterprise. Make her an example. If you have criminals in your life sooner or later you'll step over the line and wind up in prison," Ambrose said.

"What the hell," Sprague said with another shrug. "She's kind of a bitch anyway. Definitely comes across as someone who thinks she's better than a mere cop."

"That's the attitude. We'll go talk to Gemma Teller, give Knowles a day or two and then we'll pay her another visit and this time read her her rights and get her to go over the story she gave right after the nurse got killed and see if we can rattle her and get her to change her story."

Ambrose started the car and they headed off to see Gemma.
