Rapunzel woke up for the next day of the Grand Kingdom Meeting at the crack of dawn. The last day served as goodbyes were saved for the last day after a ceremony. A small sting was felt in the princess's heart as she wasn't a fan of farewells. Except for those who were annoying or enemies, but those were rare cases.
Eugene, stirred awake by the rustling of the bed, put a robe on as he walked with his wife to the window. The sunrise was breathtaking today.
"Beautiful morning, isn't it?" Eugene said.
"Yes, it is," Rapunzel said, but her mind was elsewhere.
Eugene knew his wife too well. He saw her demeanor and said, "You know, a goodbye isn't permanent. We'll see everyone again."
Rapunzel sighed and gave a warm smile. The sun's rays embraced the couple in a cozy hug.
"Are you ready?" She asked.
"With you, always."
The two walked away from the window as they got dressed and groomed themselves for the day.
The halls were filled with servants as they prepared with today's activities. Rapunzel giggled at the sight. It seemed the beginning and end were always the busiest. Even Cassandra could be seen handling chores ranging from changing sheets to fetching supplies. But everyone stopped, guards, servants, and the royal couple alike, as a man walked through the hall.
Rapunzel and Eugene watched as Chaghatai Khan walked by, wearing a smug face. Though he was not wanted, he was still under diplomatic and royal protection. Something no one could interfere with.
Worse still, some dignitaries were seen talking to the man, such as the Queen of Invgarr, now and then. Even after everything he had done, from the attack to his "presentation."
Rapunzel narrowed her eyes at him as Eugene cautiously wrapped his arm around her. Everyone knew the princess would not take the man'\s actions quietly if she could.
"Calm down, Blondie. He'll be gone by tomorrow. Provided someone doesn't do anything else," He said to his wife.
Rapunzel nodded before sending another glare at Khan.
The couple walked into the courtyard, where they saw Hiccup and Toothless land. The chief dismounted as he took notice of Rapunzel and Eugene. The dragon was happy to see them, a clear message seeing how he ran up to them with a smile.
"Find anything?" Rapunzel asked, nuzzling the head of Toothless.
"Nothing. That army must have been the only men he had. Toothless and I spent part of the night searching anywhere, from forest to sea. No sign of any ships or stations bearing Drago's mark."
After his revelation, Hiccup's suspicions about Khan were concerning. Drago was not a man to underestimate, and that's when he asked King Fredric about flying through the night and searching. Khan's room was thoroughly searched from floor to ceiling for anything else, including a messenger dragon. However, that last item had rarely been seen in Drago's army.
Breakfast was a casual event. Everyone was too busy waking up as yesterday's meeting kept them up with too many thoughts.
Many of them were still unsure what to do now. Some were stabbing their empty plates as others spoke to themselves. And while the food prepared was delicious and scrumptious, most of the room was frustrated with how things turning upside down.
It was then the announcer arrived to declare the next and final meeting.
The meeting was... relatively quiet in a sense. There was no yelling or arguing over each other as everyone could speak in an orderly manner.
It turns out nobody liked the idea of being manipulated for a cause, mostly since it involved a precise tactical attack on their lives. And now that there was someone else they were angry about, Hiccup was only brought up in what to do about Drago.
But there was still one question that outranked the dragon conquered.
"I believe we still have the issue of magic to discuss," a nobleman, King Micheal, brought up. "Now we know this Drago fellow to use dragons, but who's to say others won't do the same?"
The usual rambling was replaced with silence as everyone contemplated, thought over, and mused about what to do. Ultimately, the room looked to Rapunzel.
"Well, what do you suppose we should do?"
The princess maintained her decorum as she tried to answer the following as calmly as possible.
"We tried to form proper procedures and have failed to find a cohesive solution," Rapunzel said. "But now we barely have time for anything with the attack interrupting us. This topic will have to be convened upon in the coming months as we figure ways that work with our kingdom. And while some will be good, others won't be."
The other noblemen nodded. They didn't like hearing the last part, but it was undisputedly true. However, the more arrogant members snuffed out the last part, believing themselves to know better.
"Then I say we discuss the...dragon in the room," one nobleman, Duke Archibald, said as he turned to Hiccup and Toothless. "The Vi—ahem—Chief Haddock has made the presence of himself, his people, and the dragons known, but what are we to do about Mr. Khan?"
The room glanced at the Viking and dragon. With their innocence proven, the two heard no arguments in their attendance. Though King Trevor was slightly jealous, Toothless got a seat cushion that matched his Trevor Jr.'s.
But King Fredric was firm in his earlier decision and shouted, "no one is to touch that man! He may be an enemy, but we know nothing of his forces. Attacking him may provoke this Drago into attacking us! This time with dragons."
"I am sure that Chief Haddock could provide ample troops to counter any threat," The duke said.
"No, no. I agree with King Fredric," Chief Haddock said. "Drago is not the man to let someone attack him without repercussions."
The other dignitaries did not like hearing this. One of the men slammed his fist in rage as everyone did their best to stay calm, relatively speaking.
"We cannot simply stand here and do nothing as a man of a known enemy is here! Think of the damage he could do!" The Duke of Weselton said in outrage.
"I assure you, Chaghatai Khan is kept in his room under watch with guards rotating from every kingdom available. He can not so much as move without anyone knowing his exact whereabouts," Rapunzel countered. This calmed everyone's nerves as the tension fell to a reasonable level.
However, this didn't calm everyone.
"Then what are we to do should this Drago character decides to come down and attack us?" asked another, Graf Palin, who eyed the room in fear.
"Toothless is the Alpha, the leader. He won that right, challenging Drago's. Since taking control of his dragons, it has diminished his forces greatly, but not enough for a defeat," Hiccup said as he and Toothless stood tall. His dragon acted incredibly regal to drive home his title. Reptile or not, he had pride.
"So you're saying you have dominion over the entire dragon race?" the Duke of Weselton asked. His tone was suspicious, and he eyed the chief as such. Around the room were others who copied the latter.
"One could say that, but there's still not much about dragons we know about. With plenty feral dragons out there that we leave alone," Hiccup replied. "With reports and sightings of enemy dragon riders in Drago's army still."
The other dignitaries were curious about that—some more than others.
"What do you mean?" King Fergus asked. He glanced at Toothless. "Are you saying that the enemy could find another night fury and challenge your?"
The room talked amongst itself gain. Nobody wanted to hear that, despite the truth it holds.
Hiccup sighed as he tried to explain as best he could.
"As far as we know...Toothless may as well be...the only Night Fury. We haven't...found any others," Hiccup said with grimace.
Rapunzel looked astonished at that.
"You mean, Toothless is the only Night Fury? You haven't seen any others?" The princess said as the meeting continued.
"I can't say."
The kings and dignitaries digested the information. They weren't keen on a tribe of dragon riders existing and were less so at hearing the rarity of a species that could be alphas amongst the reptiles.
Though as the chief said, there was still much to learn about dragons.
For now, things were at a standstill with many noblemen and women wishing to discuss some different but relevant politics.
Jurisdiction.
Tonight's dinner had been a warm welcome from previous engagements. Rapunzel and her friends noted the more lax atmosphere as people talked amongst themselves in a friendlier manner than at the beginning of the week.
Hopefully, it means that things will calm down, but that was an uncertainty. It was still the last night.
But to Rapunzel and her friends, it didn't matter as they sat down together.
"I guess that was the last meeting," Rapunzel said.
"Can't say we'll have another one like this next time," Anna said. She looked up from her plate to notice some mirthful faces.
"So, you're saying we need more attacks," Elsa quipped.
Anna's eye went wide with surprise as she added, "not like that! I mean, we could use more excitement."
"I know what you meant," Elsa said, wearing a playful face. Anna gave a tricksy shove before resuming her meal.
"Are Viking meetings like this?" Rapunzel asked. "I mean, I can't imagine them being all talk."
"In my experience, this can be how such meetings go for Vikings," Hiccup added. "Though there'd be more axe throwing and maybe an insult or two thrown about."
Everyone at the table raised a brow, wondering if he was joking or not. Eugene smirked seconds later, having a good idea how such an event would play out.
"No dragons or fire? Just axes?" Elsa asked.
Hiccup nodded, though he couldn't help giving a small smile. Viking meetings could go anywhere with eweapo9ns. Axes, swords, bludgeons, maces, anything that could be used to harm one another. There was even an incident with the tables as weapons. And that was when someone didn't bring a gift to the meetings, a Viking custom in these events.
Before they could ask about that, Hiccup and Rapunzel caught a glance of Fergus, Elinor, and Merida. The Celtic saw them and gave an appreciative nod while the daughter waved with a smile.
The two watched as the Celts sat down at a table. Rapunzel would have invited them but thought it would be better to give them some space after last night.
After proving his innocence, Hiccup left with Corona's royalty to discuss the necessary documents. Along the way, the chief thought over how this would change for his people.
There would certainly be some naysayers who'd protest. It wouldn't be about change but could be about tradition, Vikings still raided, and a stop to that might go the wrong way for some. But the chief would walk that bridge when he got there.
Right now, he was receiving parchments for the treaty. If there's one thing he shouldn't do without approval, it was signing an agreement without notifying his clan. That would get the weapons flying.
"Here we go," Queen Arianna said as she handed the last bits of paper to Hiccup. The chief tucked it away into a pocket for safekeeping as Rapunzel gave him a map.
"Thanks. I know we should formalize things with an alliance, but it just doesn't feel right to go home and announce I made one without their consent. We may be Vikings, but we are one clan," Hiccup said as he studied the chart. He was amazed at how far off he went. Sure, at top speed, he'd be back within days, a week at most, but the concept of how he went in the wrong direction was silly to him.
"It's good you and your people are connected," the Queen added.
"Indeed. It is a good sign of your kingdom for that to happen," King Fredric said. He paused as a thought came to mind. "Would you call your home your kingdom?"
"I don't you'll be hearing of a Viking kingdom anytime soon," The chief said as the DuBroch royal family marched through the doors. The large king and his slender queen wore astern fasces as the princess smiled nervously. They glanced at Chief Haddock before stopping near King Fredric and Queen Arianna.
The room was silent for a good, long minute before anyone spoke up.
"I'd like to ally with Corona as well," King Fergus said gruffly.
Fredric glanced at Hiccup, who shrugged. This was unprecedented, or at least unexpected, as the DunBroch family avoided everyone who approached on any agreements.
"Are you sure?" Queen Arianna asked, walking to the Celtic King.
"Can't say, but we Highlanders have waged war with Vikings for ages. Now I find out some ride dragons," the man added before sighing. "well, it won't bode well for the others back home. Especially with the occasional Viking attack that happens."
"And while we can't just make peace with Chief Haddock and his clan, we can at least ally ourselves with his for a first step," Queen Elinor added.
"Or at least have an idea of what they would be doing," King Frederick said.
The Celts nodded nervously as Rapunzel walked in ver to comfort everyone. The Viking chief sighed and tried to retain patience.
"It's not going to be easy making peace between our people," Hiccup commented. "We're both stubborn people."
"Ay," King Fergus sighed.
Princess Rapunzel went and grabbed Princess Merida. She dragged her new friend to the center, where everyone can see.
"But it could be a step in the right direction," Rapunzel said.
Merida, who had been silent, smiled and nodded. "Ay, but no marriages. I've had enough men coming to me for that."
That got Fergus on alert as he reached for his sword. He found it missing and in the arms of his wife, who knew this would happen. The man chuckled at his nervous habit. Well, starting habit he begun to scare off anyone, granted he never drew it.
"Then we'll get started," Rapunzel said, grabbing more parchments.
The night was filled with talks and agreements, along with some stories Fergus couldn't resist telling. The man loved to spin a tale, and they filled the room with some joy.
Since then, it was decided the Vikings and Highlanders would be given space on the matter. No one would go to one another, but it didn't stop people from approaching them.
Especially when music was played, and dances were appropriate. Needless to say, both Viking chief and Celtic princess had their hands full at times. And they weren't the only ones.
Rapunzel spotted some men near Elsa. All of them were asking for a dance and when they were turned down, would ask to talk in private.
It didn't take much to know what they were getting at. While the Grand Kingdom Meeting was a place for such topics, marriages were not wanted right now as everyone silently scrambled to forge bridges without alerting almost every guest.
Even the young King Arthur found himself in the company of others. However, marriage would not be brought up yet, but an alliance for now.
The last dinner ended with some music and dance as everyone tried to stay calm, collected, and healthy. Rapunzel had grabbed a few friends, including Hiccup, for a dance as they enjoyed the night.
Afterward, everyone went to their rooms. Most went straight to bed, while others stayed up. Rapunzel and Eugene gazed out the window at a standing flag. Hiccup curled around Toothless, staring at the wall. And they weren't the only ones. King Arthur was up writing notes on some paper. Elsa opened a window as she conjured a snowflake to dance in her palms while Anna was silent. Merida did maintenance on her bow as her parents talk amongst themselves.
Tomorrow was to be the end, but so much was beginning.
And we are coming to a close as we wind down, for now. Expect the next chapter soon. And the next book(part) soon as well.
Special Thanks! to Flower Princess11 for all her help!
Reviews:
Jebest4781: Thanks! Though Drago won't be making an appearance right now.
RonaldM40196867: For this series? Yes. It's not over, just the first part soon. Other than that, I have multiple in the works, with another HTTYD and Tangled crossover, featuring Cassandra after Tangled: the Series. Which hopefully, will be out this month. That, along with a NefariousX Glitch Tech fic and I'm working on some superhero crossovers I wanted to write.
130388: Soon, hopefully.
MORTAL18: As of right now, it's just with Corona, who will be making and solidifying an alliance with the DunBrochs, who don't want to fight dragons.
Noxi26: Thanks! Elsa and the Dunbrochs, right now, are more neutral but the DunBrochs will try to make peace sooner. As for the royals, we're not done with things right now. No worries about the English.
