Chapter 15: Becoming the Ambassador

It has only been a day since the barrier has been broken, and everything seems completely different. Monsters are beginning to pack everything they have so they could move to the surface. It still doesn't feel real. I really did it…I mean…we did it. If it weren't for my amazing brother Asriel, the outcome would have been completely different. I finally feel at ease with my actions because I have finally accomplished what I came here to do. The monsters are free and Asriel is a part of the family again. Nothing can make this moment better.

As the evening quickly approaches, all our friends eventually make their way into the Ruins and into Toriel's home. I greet our friends at the large door separating the Ruins and the Snowdin Forest. It is time for the celebration to begin. As the gang gets settled in, I run to the bedroom to grab one last member.

"Hey, Azzy! Everyone is here! Are you ready to party?"

His eyes draw towards me from the end of his bed. He seems distracted.

"Oh, yeah. I'll be out in a minute," he responds.

I take a seat next to him on his bed.

"Are you alright, Azzy?"

"Yeah…just lost in thought. I still can't believe everything that is happening right now."

"You mean breaking the barrier? Finally setting all monsters free and being able to leave the Underground?"

"Not just that, but everything in this timeline."

Ah, now I see where this is going. I remain silent and let him continue.

"I just…still can't believe that I am back to my normal self. After everything I have done to everyone, to you, I still think that this is some sort of dream."

Before he could explain any further, I wrap my arms around him and hold him close to me. He accepts the gesture and leans further into my arms.

"Listen to me, Asriel. There is nothing to be sorry for. Everything you done was in the past. You are yourself again. I chose to come back and save you because you deserve a second chance after everything that has happened. It wasn't your fault that you were attacked by humans. It wasn't your fault that you were turned into an almost soulless flower. All that matters now is you being here. Not as a flower, not as dust, but as my brother. Now, can we stop this emotional moment and party?"

"Heh, yeah, you're right. Let's go have some fun tonight, Frisk."

The two of us walk out together and greet our friends.

The rest of the evening is filled with many games, activities, conversations, and best of all, pie. As the party ended, we all stayed together and just talked. We talked about our plans for when we get to the surface. We talked about packing and where we will go when we leave the Underground. We share some of the memories we had when everyone was trapped down here. There were many amazing memories that were made here. Even though monsters could not walk the surface, everyone made themselves a home down here. Of course, nobody liked living down here, but some of the best memories were made here. The conversation took a turn when Asgore threw an interesting question.

"Frisk, as you know, us monsters will have a hard time on the surface because most likely the humans will not accept us yet. We would like someone that can speak upon our behalf to avoid any further conflicts from arising. The humans will be afraid of us, but you are one of them. Would you become the ambassador for monsters?"

A moment of tense silence fills the room. Toriel jumps in.

"My child, Asgore and I have been talking, and we believe that you would be the perfect ambassador because you are so close to us and you are a human. Of course, you do not have to do it. Even a part of me doesn't like this idea because it will put you in more danger, but then I think about everything you have already done. You have done things that nobody has the guts to do. You have risked your life many times, and I absolutely hate it, but you somehow stay DETERMINED and find a solution to everything. If there is anyone that could speak for us on the surface, it would be you. Again, you don't have to do it if you don't want to."

I knew my answer before Asgore even asked the question. I knew this was coming, so I had already made up my mind long ago. I respond to the group.

"Yes, I accept the offer to become the ambassador. I will make sure that all the monsters here are protected and welcome on the surface."

The room erupts in cheers as the celebration continues. Asgore holds his cup in the air signaling everyone else to do the same.

He announces, "I propose a toast, to Frisk. Not only has she changed the lives of everyone here, but she has also saved another life and saved all monsters. Let our new ambassador bring us peace among the surface. To Frisk!"

"To Frisk!" everyone responds in unison.

Most of me is very excited about this opportunity, but there is also a little bit of fear. Becoming the ambassador for monsters puts a lot of responsibility on me. I have to be the one that has continuous conversations with the council on the surface to ensure that they are protected. I also have to make sure that monsters don't do anything that would make the humans want to hurt them or even trap them again. One little mistake by me or any of the monsters will make the humans panic and want to send us back here. There is a part of me that keeps thinking about the bad scenarios. What if the humans attack the monsters? What if the council does not believe me, a child, that I am the ambassador? What if I mess up and cause tension between the two groups? There is now a lot more pressure on me and my decisions and actions. It is now my job to act on behalf of the monsters. It is my job to keep them safe and free on the surface. Ugh…that means I should probably head to the surface first before anyone else does to make sure they are safe when they leave. I say my goodbyes to everyone and head into my room to begin packing.

After a while of packing in the silence of my bedroom, I hear a calm voice from the doorway.

"Frisk, are you okay?"

It was Toriel.

"Yeah mom, I'm just packing things."

"You have plenty of time to pack, my child. Why don't you come back with everyone else?"

"I realized that I should first contact the council to make sure that you and all of the other monsters are safe when you leave the Underground. If we leave without telling anyone, I'm sure there will be a lot of panic and violence."

My voice grows more frustration as my actions become a little more aggressive.

"And I must convince them that I am the ambassador because they will not believe me, a child. I will most likely be told to leave and that everything I said was fake."

My frustration continues to grow.

"I also need to find a good spot for everyone to live to that monsters can have a place to stay once you go to the surface."

I feel large arms wrap around me. I didn't know she got that close. I must have lost track of where she was when I was on my rant.

"My child," she responds with her usual soft tone, "you don't have to be the ambassador. We just thought it would be nice if you were because you are a human and they are more likely to listen to you than us. If Asgore went to the council, they would feel threatened."

"What about you?" I ask.

"Me, well, I lost my interest in politics after we lost our children and Asgore declared that any human that comes down here shall be killed. That's why I lived here in the Ruins, where I could be away from politics and I could be the closest to any human that falls down. I have no interest in returning to politics. Asgore will continue to lead the monsters. Listen, Frisk, just say the word and you don't have to do all of this."

I relax in her embrace.

"No…I want to do this. I chose to do this long before the question was asked. You're right, they are more likely to believe me because I am a human…but as a child? I just want to make sure that monsters can be free. If I make one little mistake, it could start a war. I could not bear having to live through that knowing I was the cause of it."

"I know you will not cause a war," she answers, "you know why?"

I shake my head no to the question.

"Look at everything you have done. I have never seen you do a single bad thing. I know for a fact that you will not do anything that will cause us to go back to our early days. You will be a great ambassador, Frisk. I hope you know how proud we all are to have you here."

I smile in response to the last comment. She's right. If I could handle monsters trying to kill me…most of them twice…I should have no problem handling the council.

"Thanks, mom. I guess a part of me is just scared about the future."

She plants a kiss on my forehead.

"We all are, my child, and we will all get through this together. Now, let me help you finish packing."

Toriel spends the next few minutes helping me pack my things for my return to the surface. We would briefly see our friends pop their heads in to say goodbye and wish me luck. What would I do without them? As the night moves on, everyone leaves, except for Asgore. He will be the one that will take me to the surface. I'm surprised that Toriel has offered him to stay here for the night. He has to sleep on the comfy chair in the living room because there is no spare bedroom. Regardless of the circumstances, I'm glad that they are getting along a little better now. They most likely won't get back together again, but if they are on somewhat good terms, that's fine with me. I tell everyone goodnight as I turn in early to prepare for the big day.

I am on the surface and I walk with the monsters out from the Underground. It is the first time many of the monsters have set foot on the surface. As we explore the area outside of Mt. Ebott, there is a scream that erupts from the other side of the mountain. I turn and see a group of people running away and others filming us with their cell phones. The screaming group runs into the city. I lead the monsters in the other direction to an open field. This seems like a good spot to set up a little town for the monsters. That night, I see a flashing, sparking light come from the forest just beside the mountain. Suddenly, a mob of humans rush out holding weapons of all sorts. They attack the little village and I watch as I see everyone I care about get brutally attacked. I try to shout for everyone to stop the fighting, but I feel motionless. I cannot speak or move. I have no power but to watch the gruesome event unfold in front of my own eyes. I see Asriel running towards me, but he gets struck down before he could reach me. I look over and see Toriel pleading to the humans for mercy, but they showed no mercy. I look over and find Asgore fighting. A large group attacks him at once, preventing him from using his powers and weaking him extremely quick. Shortly after, all the monsters become piles of dust. The mob gathers again and walks over to me.

"I should thank you. With your help, we ended all monsters. Now, we can live in peace. But before we can do that, there is still one more monster we need to get rid of."

I quickly realize that they are referring to me. My breathing quickens as I try to move, but I remain motionless. A blade raises and with one swift swing…

I jolt awake gasping for breath. I look around at my surroundings. We are still in the Underground. It was only a dream…it was only a dream…it was only a dream. As I calm down from my horrifying experience, I feel the tears begin to run down my face. Was that all because of me? My whimpers turn into sobs. My hands cover my face to wipe the continuously running tears. While I continue to let my emotions get the best of me, I feel someone sit beside me. No words are spoken, and only an embrace is given. I must of woke up Asriel.

"Shhhh…it's okay. I'm right here."

I lean into him as my sobs begin to fade away. He doesn't ask anything. He doesn't say anything. He only comforts me.

"Thanks, Azzy."

"I'm always here for you, Frisk."

"It was just a bad dream."

"By the sounds if it, it must have been pretty bad."

I nod.

"It's alright. I won't ask you about it. It is best to just forget about it and move on. That's what I do whenever I have bad dreams. Plus, you are usually the one comforting me and not the other way around."

I let out a small giggle as he releases me.

"Better?" he asks.

"Much better," I respond.

"Do you want me to stay here?"

"You don't have to."

"You didn't answer the question, Frisk."

I pause thinking about the question.

"Please?"

"Of course."

I move over on my bed to give him some room and the both of us fall back into a deep sleep. I know my bad dreams can go away whenever he is right here beside me. Man, he is the best brother ever.

Morning arrives as I quickly eat my breakfast and gather my belongings. I have a long journey ahead of me. The four of us walk together to the door to the Snowdin Forest and give our goodbyes. I first embrace Asriel.

"I know you'll do good, Frisk. Once we meet again, you need to tell me everything!"

"I will, Azzy. Also, take care of mom while I'm gone."

"Ha, I see what you did there."

Asriel steps back and I walk over to Toriel. She lowers herself down to my height.

"Please be careful, my child. There is no telling how the surface will react to us being freed. I know you will do us proud."

"Thanks, mom."

Asgore and I make our way through the Underground and to the castle. As we approach the exit to the surface, I turn to Asgore.

"I will keep you updated on everything that is happening. Did Alphys give you a phone?" I ask.

"Yes, she gave me a phone. I'm still learning how to work this thing, but it shouldn't be too hard. Be careful, Frisk. We all care about you and we would feel horrible if something bad happened to you. Whatever happens, stay DETERMINED. You will be a great ambassador."

I walk over and hug him. He grabs me and lifts me in the air with his embrace. God, he is crushing me. After a moment of pain from that embrace, I turn towards the exit.

Here I go…

I take a deep breath and step through the exit.
