Chapter 18: The Line-Up

Angel Grove Police Department, Angel Grove

January 3, 1997

4 pm

Tommy and Jason were waiting in the lobby of the police department for Detective Moore to come and get them. Tommy was wringing his hands and Jason was doing his best to keep him calm.

Just then Detective Moore came out.

"Hello Tommy, Jason, let's go back to the briefing room," Detective Moore said as Tommy and Jason got up and followed the detective to a small room that was across from the room they do the line-ups in.

Tommy and Jason sat down across from Detective Moore.

"Okay, once we're in the room, the officers will bring out the first set of suspects, which will resemble Katherine. Once you identify the correct suspect we will move on to the next set of suspects, which will resemble Tanya. Now if at any time you feel uncomfortable, just tell me and we'll take a break, okay?" Detective Moore said to Tommy.

"Okay, I understand," Tommy said as an officer came in the room.

"We're ready to do the line-ups, detective," the officer said.

"Okay. Are we ready? Detective Moore asked Tommy and Jason.

"Yes, we're ready," Tommy said as Jason nodded.

They went across the hall to the room. There was a big window straight ahead.

"Okay, you can see the suspects, but they can't see you, okay?" Detective Moore said.

Tommy nodded.

"Bring out the first set of suspects, please," Detective Moore said into the intercom as the officer brought out the first set of suspects.

Five women looking like Kat were brought in. Tommy at first couldn't figure out which one was the real Kat.

"Okay, Tommy, which ones stand out to you the most?" Detective Moore asked.

"I don't know…they all look the same. Wait…Numbers one and five do stand out the most," Tommy said.

"Officer, have numbers one and five move forward, please."

Numbers one and five moved forward.

"Maybe you can have them speak. Kat has an Australian accent," Tommy said.

"Officer, have number one say hello, please."

The officer told number one to speak. She said hello. Tommy shook his head. Her accent seemed fake to him.

"Okay officer, have number five say hello, please."

The officer told number five to speak. Tommy could recognize that accent anywhere as Kat's.

"Number five's the one. That's her!" Tommy said.

"Officer, please have the first line-up of suspects leave the room and bring number five to the holding cell, please," Detective Moore said as the officer did as he was told.

Tommy was so full of anger that Detective Moore thought that they should take a break. Tommy and Jason were excused from the room.

Tommy sat down in a chair clenching his fists. Jason sat down next to him.

"Tommy, man, you need to calm down. We need to get through the second line-up first," Jason said.

"What would possess Kat to do this? I mean, does she hate me that much so that she had to hurt my family?" Tommy asked.

"Kat had her reasons, Tommy. We won't know until she gives a statement. Now that you've identified her she has to."

"You're right, bro. Let's get this second line-up done and over with," Tommy said as he and Jason went back into the room.

"Okay gentlemen, are we ready for round two?" Detective Moore asked.

"Yes," Jason and Tommy said in unison.

"Okay. Officer, please bring in the second set of suspects, please."

The officer brought in the second set of suspects that looked like Tanya. Since Tommy has only seen Tanya a handful of times it was proving to be difficult to identify her.

"I've only seen Tanya a handful of times, but three and four stand out to me."

"Officer, have numbers 3 and 4 step forward."

The officer had numbers 3 and 4 step forward. Tommy's eyes darted between the two but the birthmark on number 3's neck was something he remembered seeing on Tanya at the restaurant he was at with Kim for her birthday last year.

"That's her, number three!" Tommy said.

"Okay officers have the second set of suspects leave the room and put number 3 in another holding cell, please," Detective Moore said as the officer had the second set of suspects leave the room.

"Well, guys, we made it through. We'll give you a call, Tommy, and see if your girlfriend is ready to talk to us in about a week. Meanwhile, get some rest, you had a rough day," Detective Moore said as Tommy and Jason nodded and left the room.

After getting dropped off by Jason, Tommy went inside his parent's house and saw Kim and Jan in the living room playing with Luca.

"Hey Tommy, how did things go at the police station?" Jan asked.

"Good. I did what I needed to do and now I'm going to take a shower," Tommy said giving Kim a kiss on the forehead and giving Luca a kiss on his forehead and went upstairs.

Once the shower was warm Tommy got in it and let the stream of water wash over his body. He wanted it to wash all the tension, all the anger, and wanted to just forget what happened today. That would last for only a short time until Kim had a flashback and woke up screaming and clinging to him.
