Chapter 20

"Sarah Hofstadter come back here!" Leonard yelled as he chased his daughter around the living room.

"You can't catch me daddy!" Sarah ran while teasing her father with Buster joining his big sister, thinking they are playing a game.

"Give me those oven mitts! The turkey's gonna get ruined!" Leonard yelled as Sarah and him circle each other around the living room.

"Do you give up now daddy!?" Sarah asked, laughing and giggling when Penny and William came through the front door, carrying a couple bags of groceries.

Penny and William smiled at each other. "Looks like this is gonna be a good Thanksgiving mom." said the young man, referring to his sister and father.

"I think you're right sweetheart. Let's see how long they can keep it up." said Penny as he held her son's hand, leading him straight to the kitchen and leaving Leonard to deal with the young princess.

"You're not gonna help me?" Leonard asked Penny.

Penny laughed a little. "She's your daughter too you know!" she said as they disappear into the kitchen.

Leonard sighed and faced Sarah who was looking intently at him, ready to jump and sprint away from his father. "Okay, if you don't give me my Spock oven mitts, the turkey's gonna be dry and bland. Do you want your turkey to be dry and bland?" he said, hoping that his food psychology would work on his daughter.

Sarah sighed and removed the oven mitts from her hands. "Okay daddy, you win." she said as Leonard went to take the oven mitts only for Sarah to jump and run away from him with Buster following close behind, joining her mother and brother in the kitchen, laughing and giggling along the way.

Leonard sighed and shook his head, feeling his patience running out as he followed his family into the kitchen.

Leonard entered the kitchen and saw his wife and kids, putting the groceries inside the fridge and counter. Sarah looked at him and smiled, playing on his love for her. "Daddy, you have to take the turkey out of the oven now! We don't want it to be dry and bland!" said Sarah making Penny and William laugh.

"I want to but you took away my Spock oven mitts." said Leonard while giving Sarah a stern look.

"What are you talking about daddy? Your oven mitts are right over there!" said Sarah, pointing at the kitchen counter.

Leonard sighed and took the mitts before opening the oven. The kitchen was then filled with the mouth-watering smell of the turkey along with the carrots, potatoes, sauce and spices in the pan. Leonard slowly took out the pan, carefully setting in on the kitchen counter to cool off while his family looked on.

"Aww, that looks perfect honey!" Penny said, tapping her husband's shoulder. "Good job!" she added.

"That looks really delicious dad." said William.

Sarah's eyes widened upon seeing the turkey, steaming in its own juices. "Daddy, can we try it now!?" Sarah asked, jumping in anticipation.

Penny smiled and held Sarah's hand. "Okay little princess, let's get you and your brother washed and dressed so we can start our Thanksgiving dinner."

"Okay mommy." she said while following her mother upstairs as Leonard started to prepare the table.

After an hour of washing up and getting dressed, the young family sat on the table for their Thanksgiving dinner as Sarah's eye widened, amazed at the assortment of food on the table — vegetable salad, mashed potatoes with gravy, steamed vegetables and corn, chicken lollipops, some brown rice, banana pudding and the turkey as the centerpiece of the table.

"It looks nice dad." said William.

"Thanks buddy. But I think we should thank Google as well." said Leonard making them all laugh.

"Your dad is right sweetie. If we did it ourselves, we would be ordering pizza right now." Penny said making Leonard and William laugh.

"What's wrong with pizza mommy?" Sarah asked.

Penny touched Sarah's cheek. "Sweetheart, today is Thanksgiving, once in a while we have to cook something special to be thankful for everything we have." she said. "Honey, why don't you start by telling us all the things you are thankful for." Penny said to her husband.

"We're not gonna eat yet?" asked Sarah.

"We'll eat after everyone had their turn." Penny told the young lady.

"Okay, let me see, I'm thankful for my wonderful wife and kids who's always surprising me with how smart they are. I'm thankful that we have a roof over our heads and I have a good job. And I'm thankful for having great friends." said Leonard. "William, do you wanna go next?" he asked his son,

William nodded. "I'm thankful to mom and dad for taking good care of us and to my cute sister who's always jumping around like a kangaroo." he said making them laugh. "I'm thankful for having good friends and teachers at school and having good aunts and uncles and cousins." he said.

"Okay, my turn." Penny said. "I'm thankful for having wonderful and smart children. I'm thankful that I have a loving husband who bought me this house, filled with wonderful memories and I'm thankful that my family is healthy and happy." she said. "Sarah sweetheart, your turn." she asked her daughter.

"Thank you mommy, thank you daddy for taking care of me, giving me my princess dresses and toys, thank you for all the food and candy and ice cream. Thank you William for teaching me how to read. Thank you to Buster for always playing with me...that's it." she said making her parents a little emotional.

Penny kissed her daughter. "I love you so much sweetheart." she said.

"I love you too mommy." Sarah said. "I love you daddy." she added.

"I love you too little princess." Leonard said. "So, shall we eat?" he asked making the young girl excited.

"Yes!" Sarah yelled as the couple helped their children put food on their plate. Buster came in, excited to see the table full of food. "Hey Buster, are you hungry?" asked Sarah. The dog barked and wagged his tail at Sarah, excited to be eating with them. "Okay, just stay there and behave." said Sarah as Buster rested his head on her lap, being the good boy as they began eating.

"This is so delicious daddy!" Sarah said after taking a big bite of her turkey slice. Buster softly whimpered, asking his sister for a treat. "Here you go boy." Sarah said while giving a small slice to the dog.

They continued eating when the door bell rang. Leonard stood up to open the door and was surprised to see Amy standing outside, looking sad and agitated. He knew that Sheldon was somewhat responsible for Amy's current mood.

"Amy, come in." said Leonard. "Do I need to ask or is it safe to assume you're here because of Sheldon?" he said.

"I'm sorry about this Leonard." Amy said while putting her handbag on the couch.

"Come on, we're having Thanksgiving dinner." He said as Amy followed him into the table.

Sarah and William got off their seats and hugged their aunt. "Aunt Amy!" Sarah said while hugging Amy.

"Aww, I missed you little princess!" Amy said, kissing Sarah on the cheek before ruffling William's curly hair. "Hi William." she added before taking her seat.

"So, what did Sheldon do now?" Penny asked like it was nothing out of the ordinary.

"You know my husband, always coming up with crazy stuff that only him understands." said Amy as Penny gave her a plate and some utensils before pouring a glass of wine for her. "Thanks Penny."

"What did uncle Sheldon do aunt Amy?" asked Sarah.

"He said that we should celebrate Thanksgiving without celebrating it." Amy said.

"I don't understand." said Sarah.

Leonard smiled at his daughter. "Honey, it means they won't celebrate Thanksgiving." He said.

"But why? You don't have anything to thank for aunt Amy?" Sarah asked making Penny smile. "We already said what we are thankful for, right mommy?" said Sarah.

"That's right sweetheart." said Penny.

"Maybe you can say it now aunt Amy?" Sarah said making Amy smile.

Amy drank her wine and nodded. "Okay. I'm thankful for having wonderful friends and their smart and cute children." she said while lightly pinching Sarah's cheek, making the little girl smile. "I'm thankful for having a great job and career. I'm grateful that my family is well, although I haven't called them in a while. That's basically it I guess." said Amy.

"But aunt Amy you forgot uncle Sheldon." said William.

"Uh sure, I'm thankful that I don't have to see him for another few hours." said Amy making the kids a little sad.

Sarah turned to her father. "Daddy, what's wrong with uncle Sheldon?" asked the young girl.

Leonard sighed. "Honey, nothing's wrong with your uncle Sheldon." He said.

"Then why does he hurt aunt Amy on Thanksgiving? Isn't he thankful that aunt Amy is his wife?" Sarah said making Amy a little emotional, touched by the child's simple view of things.

"You're really a sweet princess." Amy said.

Sarah smiled then turned to face William. "See that? Aunt Amy says I'm a sweet princess!" she said.

"Fine, we get it already!" William said making his parents laugh.

They continued eating while making small talk until they heard the door bell. Leonard stood up, having an idea of who's at the door. He opened it and was not surprised to see Sheldon standing at the porch.

"What did you do now?" he asked as he welcomed Sheldon inside the house.

Sheldon hung his head and slightly hesitated before speaking. "Well, Amy may have spent all say cooking for Thanksgiving when I told her that we shouldn't be celebrating it." he said.

Leonard sighed and couldn't believe what he was hearing. "So let me get this straight, Amy spends all day cooking and preparing for thanksgiving and when you come home you told her that you shouldn't celebrate at all!?" he asked.

Sheldon looked at Leonard and didn't respond until they saw Penny, Amy, William and Sarah emerge from the kitchen with arms folded. All of a sudden, Sarah spoke, surprising them all.

"Sheldon Lee Cooper! What you did was wrong and you should apologize to aunt Amy right now!" she yelled while all of them looked at the young lady in complete disbelief.

Amy stared at Sheldon. "Well Sheldon?" she said as they all look at him.

"I'm sorry Amy. What I did was wrong and I promise it wouldn't happen again." said Sheldon.

"Aren't you gonna say thank you uncle Sheldon?" Sarah said, making Leonard and Penny smile.

"Uh, thank you for what?" Sheldon asked.

"It's thanksgiving uncle Sheldon, we would say all the things we're thankful for. We already did it, right mom?" Sarah said while looking at her mother.

"She's right Sheldon." said Penny.

"So? Why don't you give it a try Sheldon?" said Leonard.

Sheldon sighed. "Okay. Thank you Amy for being with me and thank you to Leonard, Penny and their children." he said making them all smile.

"Alright, why don't we all go back in there and eat?" Penny said as she took Sarah's hand, leading her back in the kitchen with Amy and William following after them.

Leonard and Sheldon decided to follow them. "How do you do it Leonard?" Sheldon asked.

"Do what?" said Leonard.

"Well, before Sarah was born you can barely keep up with Penny. Now there's two of them." he said. "You're like Luke Skywalker going against Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader." said Sheldon.

Leonard sighed. "Sheldon, as much as I appreciate being compared to Luke Skywalker, I don't think that's a nice comparison." he said. "And don't let Penny hear you say that or you'll know what it feels like to be dismembered by a Sith Lord." he added.

Sheldon nodded. "That's probably a good idea." he said when they heard Penny yell.

"BUSTER!" she shouted. Leonard and Sheldon ran to the kitchen and joined them in seeing the dog standing on Sarah's chair, helping himself and eating the food on Sarah's plate. Buster raised his head and looked at them, knowing he did something bad. The dog then stopped eating and quietly jumped off the chair, walking towards the backdoor with his tail between his legs.

"Mom?" William said.

"Yes sweetie?" said Penny.

"I told you this is gonna be a good Thanksgiving." said the young man, making them all laugh.
