Mate of My Desire

Chapter 21

"Well, I believed that worked out well," Harry said as he and Hermione walked out of the Ministry, ignoring the many looks they were getting. He knew they were all really looking at his best friend, but he knew she didn't care what they all thought.

Hermione nodded and said, "Yes, I think so too."

They walked a bit down the street before giving a quick look around, then Disapparating away, landing seconds later in front of Hermione's front door. Hermione went to enter her home but stopped and instead turned to Harry.

"Do you think Fenrir got my message?" Hermione asked almost uncertainly.

"I'm sure of he did Hermione, as well as everyone else," Harry replied. "Remember, Kingsley said that everyone who had a wand and was registered in the Ministry were connected to the Wand Broadcasting System. So, there is no doubt in my mind that he didn't get your message to him."

He then smiled reassuringly at her. "And no matter what, I promise to stand by you through this, as well as defend your relationship with Greyback should anyone else oppose."

The brunette smiled and hugged her friend, saying softly, "Thank you, Harry."

"No problem, Hermione." Harry returned her hug and smiled before pulling away. "I'll see you later, preferably at a more appropriate hour."

Chuckling, Hermione nodded and suggested at noon, giving some leeway for after she was supposed to meet Fenrir—should he show up—to fill him in on whatever would or would not happen. Agreeing, Harry bid her 'goodnight' before Disapparating away back to Grimmauld Place. Entering her own home, Hermione closed and locked the door before leaning against it, letting out a sigh. Godric, she really hoped Fenrir received her message. And further, she hoped he would meet her tomorrow like she hoped. She really wanted to see him again, especially after realizing that she loved him.

Pushing off the front door, she walked back to her bedroom and changed back into her nightgown, then climbed back into bed. Pulling her covers up on her, head cushioned into her pillow, she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep, full of hope that Fenrir would meet her. A month was far too long for her to not see him, and she hoped he thought the same.

Molly shushed her son soothingly as he let out a cry of pain, her trying to clean the bite wound on his neck as tenderly as possible. As she looked at the swollen bite mark, she couldn't help the tears that filled her eyes. She had had a feeling that Greyback would get his proper revenge on her son for what he did, but she wished it hadn't happened. All the same, she also figured it was probably inevitable. Ron had treaded on dangerous territory going against werewolf mating law, even if he hadn't known it existed. And to do so against a werewolf like Fenrir Greyback…well, she could at least thank Merlin that the beast hadn't killed her son.

Ron let out another cry of pain as his mother applied a few drops of Essence of Dittany to his wound, new skin immediately growing over the wound, greenish smoke billowing up from the closing bite mark. Molly sighed in relief at seeing that, though the faint scarring of Greyback's bite mark was still there. Once Ron seemed to have calmed down a bit from the pain, she gave him a Wiggenweld Potion for his other injuries from being beaten badly, watching as the injuries began to fade, only leaving behind some light bruising.

Stroking his hair out of his forehead, she asked, "Are you alright?"

"No, I'm not bloody alright," Ron replied with a scowl. "Greyback bit me, turning me into werewolf and left his vicious goons to beat me up, one even threatening to do so during the full moon. So no, I'm not alright."

"Watch your tone, Ronald," Arthur replied sternly.

Ron huffed before saying, "I want to press charges against Greyback for this; I want revenge."

"That's enough son, just stop. Enough talk of revenge and getting even with Greyback and…just…enough! We wouldn't be in this predicament in the first place if you had just left Greyback and Hermione alone."

"Especially Hermione," Ginny inputted from her seat across from her brother and mother. "The moment Hermione told you that she liked Greyback and made it clear that she wouldn't ever choose you, you should have let it go. But you always have to go about things the hard way before getting the point."

"Ginny," Molly admonished.

Arthur looked at his daughter before turning back to his son. "Furthermore, Hermione has already informed everyone of your offense that needed to be punished by werewolf law, and now it has been. No need to continue to stew about it."

Just then, the Floo roared to life and Bill emerged within the green flames, stepping through into his old home, a concerned expression on his face. Ginny had Floo-called him and informed him of what had happened to his youngest brother, asking him to come through as soon as possible. He had said he would, but first had contacted Remus to inform him of what had happened before making his way to the Burrow.

"Bill," Molly said as she stood up to hug her oldest. Looking up at him, she said, "We're so glad you are here. I'm sure Ginny filled you in."

"Yes, she did," Bill replied. "I took the time to contact Remus before coming. He's trying to acquire some Wolfsbane Potion for Ron, then he'll be coming. He told me to tell you that if he can't get some for Ron on such short notice, he'll give him a few phials from his own stash."

"That's kind of him, thank you darling."

Arthur nodded. "Yes, thank you for telling him, Bill. I didn't even think to contact him."

Bill nodded. "Remus said he had a feeling this would happen, Fenrir deciding to still carry out Ron's punishment. Even so, he hopes the Wolfsbane Potion will give us all some comfort now that Ron is carrying the curse and be there for him following the full moon."

"When is the full moon?" Ginny asked.

"In three days. Ron will have his first transformation then, and Remus said all we can do is wait it out and support him."

"Damn it!" Ron shouted before kicking the table in front of him, knocking it over. "I don't want this to be my life!"

Ron glared at the overturned table in anger, frustrated tears beginning to fill his eyes before he covered his face, a shuddering breath leaving his body as he tried to keep from crying. His parents looked at each other before Molly hugged her youngest son, gently coaxing him up from his seat and up the stairs to his bedroom, intent on tucking him in, just like when he was a child. As they disappeared upstairs, Ginny couldn't help but feel as if the worst was yet to come for her foolish brother. And what made it worse was that she felt whatever was to come for him, it would happen soon.

The next morning at a quarter till eleven, Hermione Flooed into Hogwarts, entering from the fireplace of the Headmistress's Office. She had contacted McGonagall via owl early that morning, asking permission to enter Hogwarts through her Floo Network, to which the older witch agreed. Dusting the soot from her clothes, Hermione looked up to see Professor McGonagall waiting for her. Smiling at the woman, she greeted, "Good morning, Professor."

McGonagall smiled and replied in greeting, "Good morning, Ms. Granger."

"Thank you for allowing me to enter Hogwarts this way. I'm sure I could have come through the wards and the gate, but I just wanted to be safe about it."

"That's fine, no worries. After all, considering the broadcast message you sent out last night, I knew it was only a matter of time before you contacted me."

Hermione blinked in surprise. "You…you know I met Fenrir while I was at Hogwarts?"

The Headmistress nodded and smiled in amusement. "Of course, I did. When I took notice that you seemed rather bothered about something during your Sixth Year, especially after having a meeting of sorts with Albus, I demanded he tell me what was wrong with my favorite student. Of course, he swore me to secrecy and to not let you know that I knew your situation, but I knew nonetheless."

"Oh, alright."

"Of course, I did wish that my favorite student would have chosen a better partner, but I also understand that 'tis destiny you be with Mr. Greyback. And with the obvious emotion you had in your message to him last night, it is obvious you are meant to be with him. Therefore, I wish you luck today."

The brunette smiled and thanked McGonagall before leaving her office, walking through the corridors to get to the castle grounds. She ignored the stares and whispers from the students as she passed by them, even ignoring a taunt and jeer from a Slytherin student about her blood status, as well as her relationship with Fenrir. Soon she was walking out on the grounds, her pace picking up as the Forbidden Forest came into view. Spotting Hagrid on his front lawn, she waved at him as he called out in greeting, "'Ello 'Ermione!"

Slowing down as she reached the edge of the Forbidden Forest, she looked into its dark woods before taking a deep breath. Letting it out, she stepped determinedly stepping into the forest, the daylight she had been standing in disappearing as she walked under the forest's dark foliage. Hermione walked for a while, not entirely sure where she was going, but felt she was getting close to a familiar part of the Forbidden Forest. Perhaps she was getting close to where she first met Fenrir.

Making a turn around a tree, Hermione stopped in her tracks, her brown eyes wide in shock as a surprised gasp escaping her throat. There sitting on an overturned tree, obviously waiting patiently for her, was Fenrir.
