Chapter 24

The rest of the week had Dean and Sam staying at Missouri's and practicing the transfer of their energy. They found that their energies could be given back before the allotted time was up if needed. After a dozen tries both felt comfortable with the spell and had the words down pat.

Missouri worked with Sam when he was energized on how to contact spirits and speak to them. She showed him how to be careful and not let evil spirits use him as a medium to cross over. Missouri cautioned him to be extremely careful if he had to do this, some spirits were not always helpful and wanted to cause more harm than good.

On Friday, they picked up Mama Edeline and took her out for lunch to thank her for the help she provided. It was enjoyable and sad at the same time. Dean was going to miss her and gave her a warm hug when they were ready to leave. She invited the brothers to come by any time they were in town and see her. Dean promised they would, and they bid her farewell knowing she would not be forgotten.

During a light dinner, Missouri made the boys promise to contact her if they had any questions or problems. She wanted to be kept informed about their movements in case they needed her expertise. Sam reminded her he could 'stop by' for a chat whenever he had break, astral projection was the next best thing to being there in person.

The brothers assured Missouri they would keep her updated on their adventures and told her if they couldn't call her, they would have Bobby do it. After taking in the night show from the deck, one more time, Dean decided it was time for him and Sam to call it a night when Sam started nodding off. They were leaving the next morning for Sioux Falls and wanted to get an early start. They bid Missouri good night and headed upstairs to bed.

"Go ahead and use the bathroom first," Sam told Dean as they stepped into the bedroom. He went to his duffle for sleep clothes and sat down on the bed.

"Okay, hey Sammy?" Dean asked as he picked up his sleep clothes and paused before stepping out.

"Yeah, what?" Sam asked looking up.

"Are you good with leaving in the morning? I mean, do you feel like you need more time with Missouri for any additional training on what you guys have been working on? You're not a kid anymore, and I need to let you grow up and be the adult that you are. We're equals now who have ramped up powers and a stronger connection than before. This is about both of us here, and I realized I didn't ask you about this. You should have a voice here too."

Sam looked at Dean with surprise because he had always followed him and let him make most of the decisions since he was the oldest. It had been like that all his life. It actually felt good to be asked this and included in the decision. He mulled it over for a moment.

"I think I'm good. Like Missouri said, there's not much more she can help us with, and we've been here over a month already. I think it's time we head out. We've been out of the action long enough," Sam told him. "Besides, if we need more training in any area, we can still stop by for a refresher class whenever we need it."

"Alright then," Dean huffed. "We leave in the morning." Dean stepped into the bathroom to do his nightly routine and change. He was done and out in less than fifteen minutes. He stepped from the bathroom to see Missouri hurrying down the hall toward him, her face filled with worry.

"Missouri, what's wrong?" Dean asked as he went on full alert.

"Where's Sam? I heard him cry out in pain," she rushed as she looked around Dean.

Dean turned to the bedroom and stormed inside to find Sam laying on his bed, clutching his head as he worked on breathing through whatever was happening to him.

"Sammy, what's wrong?" Dean questioned going to his side. When he didn't get an answer, Dean sat down beside him and tried to see his face.

"I think he's having a vision Dean," Missouri supplied. "That's it honey; work on controlling your breathing and let it play out," she whispered to him.

The vision came suddenly, and Sam hissed with the pain for a moment until it eased slightly. He used the tools Missouri taught him and slowed his breathing as he opened his mind to the scene. He rolled onto his side on the bed and fisted his temples, willing the vision to clear so he could see it. It started off blurry and out of focus until it finally began to clear. Sam could hear voices nearby but couldn't lock on to them as he gave his full attention to the scene.

A forest started taking shape as the mist lifted and everything started to clear. Sam looked around not sure what was going on. There was a leaning, rusty road sign that told him he was on Hollow Springs Road. He saw a driveway at the edge of the trees and began to walk down it. The moon was hanging in the sky, casting the land in shadows, and making it look like a horror movie set. An old house came into view that looked like it hadn't been occupied in a long time. He stopped at the house and looked around waiting for something to happen.

A van pulled up the driveway and pulled around the house to the side where it couldn't be seen. Sam remained still knowing he couldn't be seen, but still had that urge to hide. He moved to the corner of the house and looked around it as the van doors opened and three men and three women got out. He got a bad vibe as two of the guys, threw arms around two of the women and drug them toward the backdoor. The other guy and girl hung back, laughing before following them inside.

Sam moved down the side of the house and tried looking in the windows but couldn't see anything. He was suddenly inside the house and staring into what looked like the living room. There were candles lit sitting on the mantle, two ratty, torn, couches flanked it and sitting on couches were the two women. The other four members of the group were standing behind the couches, two on each one and they were drinking the blood from the women. They were vampires and were having an evening meal.

Sam pulled out, trying to find something that would tell him where he was. He had no way of helping the two victims if he couldn't find out where they were. He saw a newspaper on a counter in the kitchen and looked at the name on it, Fremont Herald and under that was a headline that read, 'Another Missing Person In Small Town Nebraska'. The paper was dated for tomorrow. He now had a town and state name, at least, and a road name. He just hoped they could get there and find the vampires before they kill the women he saw.

"Sammy! Sam, are you okay?" Dean kept asking when he saw Sam's body go limp. He cupped Sam's face and felt for a pulse that was beating erratically. Sam sucked in a long, hard breath when he finally opened his eyes and looked up at Dean. "There you are," Dean cooed to him as he helped Sam sit up on the bed.

"Honey," Missouri questioned him taking his hand and looking into his eyes.

"Pa-per…Pen…" Sam's voice wavered in a rough, hoarse voice.

Missouri looked around and saw a pad and pen laying by Sam's duffle. She grabbed them and put them in Sam's shaking hands. Sam started writing down what he remembered from the vision, his words almost unreadable. He filled the page, until the pen fell from his fingers and he doubled over the paper, letting his mind and body settle back in place.

Dean slipped the pad from his lap and squinted as he tried to read his brother's hen scratch. He made out Nebraska and vamps but wasn't sure about the rest. Dean draped a hand around Sam's shoulders and massaged his neck feeling the stiffness in his body. He didn't say anything, letting Sam take his time to recover so he could tell them what he saw.

Once Sam got his breathing under control and had sipped on some water, he looked at Dean with fearful eyes.

"There's a nest of vampires in Fremont, Nebraska that are killing people. They're going to kill two women if we don't get there to save them," Sam explained. "We need to leave early in the morning, I saw a paper with tomorrow's date on it, so those women are going to be taken tomorrow evening."

"Alright Sammy, we'll save them," Dean assured him seeing the panic in his eyes. "How far is this Fremont from here, do you know Missouri?"

"It's on the way to Bobby's. I'd say about three hours and Sioux Falls is less than four hours from there," Missouri replied. "Why don't you boys try to rest tonight, and I'll have you some breakfast ready early in the morning, so you'll have plenty of time to get there before anyone else dies."

"She's right Sammy, you need to try and rest after the vision. You need to be a hundred percent if we're going up against a nest of vampires. How many did you see?"

"There were four, but there could have been others, I'm not there," Sam sighed. He knew they were right, and he needed to rest, but that was easier said than doing it.

"Go on and get ready for bed Sam, I'm going to make you a hot drink that should help you relax and rest," Missouri told him as she patted his arm and got up to head downstairs.

"It's going to be okay Sammy. We're both powered up enough to handle a small nest of vamps. You've got to remember that, and we have our secret weapon if all else fails."

"You're right, we're super charged now and it should be easy," Sam agreed before getting up and heading into the bathroom on rubbery legs. When he came back out, Missouri had left a cup of warm tea for him to drink.

"Missouri said this should relax you and help you sleep," Dean told him. He watched as Sam picked the cup up and took a tentative sip before deciding it wasn't bad and continued to drink it.

Sam sipped on the tea and felt it seem to warm his body and before he knew it, his eyes were getting heavy. He sat the cup on the nightstand and scooted down in his bed as he pulled the covers up to his chest.

"Nite Sammy, wake me if you need anything," Dean offered before turning off the lamp.

"Nite Dean," Sam yawned as he wiggled around and got comfortable. His breathing evened out and he let the darkness sweep him away into the clouds.

Dean listened to his brother's breathing as it got slower and knew he had gone to sleep. Sleep didn't come that easy for him and he tossed back and forth until finally dozing off thinking about Sam and the vision.

Dean opened his eyes and looked around wondering where he was. He was sure it was a park, but he didn't think he had been there before. Dean started walking down a path that led around a small lake that had ducks and swans swimming around in it. Up ahead he spotted a familiar face sitting on a bench looking out across the landscape.

"Sammy?" Dean questioned when he got closer.

"Dean? What are you doing here?" Sam asked sitting up straighter and staring at him.

"Is this your dream? Am I in your dream?"

"Yeah, I come here sometimes when I feel stressed. You're dream walking dude!"

"Yeah, I guess I am. Where are we?" he asked looking around and pleased with himself to have actually done this.

"It's a park near Stanford. I used to come here by myself and then with…" Sam started but stopped not able to say her name.

"I get it. It's nice here," Dean said. He didn't mention her name either knowing it was still painful for Sam.

"Do you know how you did it, dream walked?"

"No clue, I listened to you go to sleep and it took me a little longer. I was thinking about you and suddenly I was standing by the lake."

"Maybe you have to be really focused on a person before you go to sleep and that allows you to visit them?"

"Could be. Are you really okay Sammy?"

Sam looked back out across the water and he let out a slow breath.

"I will be if we can stop the vampires from killing those two women."

"We will, we will."

They silently sat on the bench and took in the tranquil atmosphere until Dean felt his connection fade and rolled over in his bed but not waking up. He was in his own dreams once again.
