Chapter 27: Visiting old Friends
Winter break, 1991
Boston
After getting off the plane and into the airport, 6 month pregnant Sara and her boyfriend was looking around until they saw the familiar person who was picking them up, so as they walked up to him, Scott shook his head with a smile and chuckle. "No way it's been close to six months since I last saw you."
They chuckled before Sara nodded while they get into a hug, or at least the best hug they could get. "I'm afraid so, it does feel a lot longer though, doesn't it?"
He nodded as they pulled back. "Very much so. I've missed you."
Sara gave him a friendly smile. "I've missed you too."
She then asked about Kelly after Scott and Grissom greeted one another, while they were heading towards baggage claim, and he told her that she was having a girls day with her older sister by 2 years, younger sister by 6 years, and their mom, and that they'll see her at dinner later that night.
Once they left the airport, Sara mentioned stopping at a hotel so they could get a room and drop off their bags, but Scott waived it off and took them somewhere else, and when he stopped in the parking lot to the familiar apartment complex, the place she lived during her last year at Harvard, she shook her head. "Scott, we don't want to intrud..."
He cuts her off with a smile. "And you're not. Now tonight you'll have to share the place, but tomorrow night it will be all yours." Sara was about to speak, but he continued. "Eric and Nancy are leaving together right after the reception to go to his parents house for the rest of the holiday, and Kelly and I booked a honeymoon suite. We would have booked a room for you ourselves, knowing every dollar counted for you two right now, but we knew how resistant you could be."
He smirked that last part with a challenge look on his face, causing Grissom to chuckle, knowing how right the other man was about his girlfriend, and Sara just rolled her eyes before she sighed. "If you're sure."
"We are, besides we wanted you to say your goodbyes to the apartment."
Sara looked surprised as the three of them got out of the vehicle. "What do you mean?"
While they got the bags, which the guys took them before Sara had a chance to reach hers, Scott replied. "Well, Eric and Nancy wanted a different place of their own, and Kelly and I decided we are ready for a house."
Sara smiled as they walked into the building complex. "Wow, congratulations."
"Thank you."
Then she asked as they walked into the elevator. "And what's this Eric and Nancy thing? Are they a couple now?"
Scott chuckled with a nod. "Oh you have no idea, it turns out they've been hiding it for awhile."
While they have always been nice to one another, Sara never really got the feeling that there could be more between them, plus both of them had a few significant others during the four years she was around them during college, so this came as a surprise to her.
"Really?"
He smirked again. "I can't believe you didn't see it coming."
Grissom smirked too while Sara chuckled, shaking her head. "Hey, it's not like I can see or know all. I just never got that vibe between them."
Scott nodded in understanding before he continued while they were walking out of the elevator. "Sometimes it takes time for couples, they don't all start like a flash of lightening."
The couple nodded in agreement as they walked the rest of the way in silence, then after walking into the apartment, where not much has changed since Sara lived there, they headed for the bedroom Sara had.
Scott set her bags on the bed before he left the room to give them privacy/unpack, which as they were, they kept eyeing the bed knowingly, then once they were done, Sara had stopped at the end of the bed while Grissom walked up behind her and placed his hand on her stomach before she placed her hand on top of his, both sighing in content. He kissed her temple a second later before they headed back into the living room.
For most of the afternoon it was just the three of them, catching each other up on what's been going on in their lives, then as it got closer to evening, Eric and Nancy showed up at the apartment, and they got to hear the story of how they began their relationship, which started out as a one night, drunken mistake after graduation, but turned into something they never saw coming and they couldn't be happier about it, which Sara and Grissom, particularly Sara since she knew them longer, also couldn't have been happier for them.
When it got to dinner time, they were met by Kelly at an Italian restaurant, where they enjoyed the food and company, and when they made it back to the apartment they all sat around the living room, enjoying more of the company, all happy that they were together again.
2 days later
The next day was mostly spent getting the last minute wedding details sorted out before the bride and groom had a low-key bachelorette/bachelor party later that evening.
Then the next day after that, Sara and Grissom, along with Kelly and Scott's other friends and family, watched a couple who had stuck together, even when things weren't easy, which still wouldn't be for at least a few more years until Kelly officially leaves the Air Force, and made it to their dream day.
Later that night, once the reception ended, Sara and Grissom made it back to the apartment alone, dressed in more casual clothing and cuddled on the couch while watching a movie, but halfway through it, Grissom surprised her with a question. "How do you feel about getting married?"
Sara moved her head from his shoulder so she could have a better look at him, and she looked shocked. "What? Are you..."
She trials off as he paused the movie and turned his body towards her before continuing. "It's just we never talked about it before." He then took her right hand, where the promise ring was still there, and shook his head lightly. "Well, maybe not officially."
She squeezed his hand lightly while lifting his chin up before cupping his cheek with emotion. "Griss, you know I want to marry you, don't you?" He nodded before she continued. "I just don't want to feel like we are getting married now because I am pregnant, that's not how I want our marriage to start."
He shook his head with a frown. "But you know that's not why we would, it's more than that, we are more than that."
"Yeah, ok you have a point, but can you honestly tell me that if I wasn't pregnant right now, marriage would even come up in our conversations?" He was about to speak, but she continued with a reassuring/loving smile. "Even though we are 100% committed to one another."
He took a moment to really think about it before he shook his head with a sigh. "No, I guess not." Then he got into reassuring mode, even a little teary-eyed. "But I've always wanted to. I just wanted to make sure we were..."
She cuts him off, as she ran her thumb up and down his cheek. "I know, babe, when we are more prepared to take on a marriage." He nodded as she moved closer to him and kissed his forehead before moving down to his right cheek, causing him to close his eyes before she moved to his neck then his ear and whispered. "I love you so much, but I think, with everything..."
He whispered in a understanding tone. "Our plate is kind of too full for marriage right now." After she nodded, she kissed his cheek one more time before pulling back, then he asked as their eyes became connected. "But not off the table?"
She shook her head with a smile. "That will never be off the table." Then she continued with more confidence. "Someday I'll be 'Sara Grissom', make no mistake on that one."
He smiled with a raised eyebrow. "So, no Sidle-Grissom?"
"No way, I've dreamed about 'Sara Grissom' for years."
His smile got a little wider as he took her left hand and brought it up to his lips and kissed it before whispering. "Funny, I've had the same dream." He paused for a second before he sighed. "I can and can't wait at the same time, if that even makes sense."
She chuckled as she moved their hands to her lips and kissed his hand before whispering. "I know what you mean."
They leaned closer to one another until their lips touched, which wasted no time becoming passionate, and that all too-familiar feeling washed over them, so after she managed to slow them down enough, she got up as gracefully as she could with a six month pregnant stomach before looking down at him with her heart racing while holding out her hand. "You know what else is not off the table right now?"
Seeing that look in her eye, he knew what she was talking about, so he asked while she helped him up. "Are you sure?"
She slipped her fingers through his as she whispered. "Like Scott said, this weekend is a goodbye to this place, and this is where a dream, albeit a little early than planned dream, started to come true, so it's like..."
He smiled again as he cupped her cheek. "Coming full circle."
She smiled with a nod as they moved closer to one another to kiss again, so as their lips remained connected they navigated their way towards the bedroom they were staying in, but stopped at a wall next to the door as her back went against it while their kisses became more intense.
Eventually their fingers slipped out one another's and they pulled back so she could move her fingers to the hem of his shirt and lift it up over his head, letting it fall on the floor before moving her hands up his chest until she cupped his cheek and brought him back towards her so they could kiss a little more.
When they pulled back again, this time his fingers went to the hem of the shirt she was wearing, which she managed to stop the tense feeling that came over her, but didn't stop her from biting her lip in nervousness, and he just smiled as he cupped her cheek, seeing that action. "Honey, you're going to have to stop giving me that look, haven't I proven to you that I still want you, that there is nothing that's ever going to stop making me not want you."
She took a breath, hoping she just didn't break the mood. "I know, I'm sorry."
"You also don't need to apologize. It get it." Then he smirked as he got closer to her again. "But hey, if I have to keep reassuring you, I'm up for the task."
Her chuckle gets cut off when his lips touched hers softly, and after pulling back slightly, she wrapped her arms around his neck as she teased him. "And I'm sure that's a difficult task for you."
He chuckled before kissing her softly again. "It's pure torture." Another soft kiss. "Unimaginable pain." This time a deeper kiss, getting them back into that mood, and after pulling back one more time, he whispered. "I love you, more than anything." When they felt a kick between them, they chuckled as he lifted her shirt up and placed his hand on her stomach. "Outside of you buddy, of course." He then looked at his girlfriend, the mother of his child, his everything really. "You two are my world."
When the kicks died down, she cupped his cheek while she whispered. "And you two are mine."
She gives him one more kiss, and while it was soft, it still made them want more, so after she pulled away from him, she walked just inside the darken bedroom and took her shirt off. He stepped into the room a moment later and closed the door behind him, closing out the rest of the world for the rest of the night.
Next morning
By the time they woke up and packed up, Kelly and Scott made it to the apartment, then they took Sara and Grissom out for breakfast at a familiar diner before taking them to the airport, and once they got there, they parked, got out and grabbed their bags out of the back.
After Sara and Kelly said their goodbyes while Grissom and Scott said theirs, Sara and Scott shared a hug, then she smiled while saying. "Congratulations again, I'm so happy you two got your happy ending."
He chuckled. "Well, we aren't done yet."
She chuckled in return. "You know what I mean."
He nodded with a bright smile, the brightest smile Sara had ever seen on his face. "Yes I do, and thank you." He then continued. "And congratulations to you and Grissom, he'll be the luckiest boy in the world."
Feeling up with emotions, she took his hand. "Thank you, not only for what you said, but for making my four years here bearable."
He squeezed her hand lightly. "And that road wasn't one-sided, you made me missing Kelly bearable. I say we had a very good friendship while we were here."
"We 'have' a good friendship, it's not going away just because we aren't in the same state anymore."
"You're right."
Grissom, who heard the last thing he had said, smirked as he wrapped his arm around her waist. "Isn't she right about almost everything."
They chuckled, while Sara lightly elbowed him in the gut, before Sara cleared her throat. "We better go."
"Alright. Let us know when your son arrives, we would like to meet him soon."
The couple nodded before Grissom spoke as he held out his hand. "You got it, and thank you for everything you've done for Sara."
As he took Grissom's hand, Scott nodded. "You're welcome, take care, both of you."
"You too."
After they picked up their bags, Sara and Grissom headed towards the airport entrance, and while watching them walk away, Scott wrapped his arm around his new wife. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"For trusting me to be a friend to Sara."
She took a breath before revealing. "I have to admit that I was a little afraid at first, especially when her name started popping up a lot during our conversations."
Scott frowned. "Kel, I would ne..."
She cuts him off with a smile as she turned around to cupped his cheek. "Deep down I know that you would never do that to me. Plus, once I met her and Grissom together, I knew I would have nothing to worry about, they have that staying power."
"Yeah they do, and I know it's happening sooner than they would have liked, but they are going to make excellent parents." Kelly bit her lip, causing Scott to asked. "What is it?"
She took his hand and placed it on her stomach. "And so are you."
His eyes get wide. "What? For real?"
She nodded with tears in her eyes. "For real, you're going to be a daddy."
"Oh my god, I love you."
He then kissed her passionately, and after pulling back, he asked. "Can I?"
Even though a part of her wanted to wait longer to start telling people, another part knew that Scott wanted to tell Sara first, but not over the phone, so she nodded. "Ok, go ahead."
He gave her another kiss before taking off running, causing her to chuckle while thinking how much she loved her man.
Sara and Grissom had barely made into the airport, when they heard the exciting voice of Scott as he tried to catch his breath. "Guys, you're not gong to believe this."
They turned around and Sara looked worried. "Scott, what's wrong?"
After taking a few more deep breath, he spoke with a smile, a very bright one. "I'm going to be a daddy, Kelly just told me."
They both gasped in surprised, then smiled as they congratulated him, and after he turned and walked out of the airport, Sara and Grissom continued walking towards their gate, both happy for the newlywed couple.
