Frank POV
"Jason!" I whisper shouted. "We have to hurry or we're gonna get caught!"
"I'm trying, Frank, but I'm no mechanic. Neither are you. I have no idea what I'm doing!"
It was true. Jason and I were in the middle of setting up the trap with the supplies that Leo sent us. It had been a little over an hour, but we were only 3 quarters of the way done. Like Jason said, neither of us are good at this kind of thing.
We had found a spot right by the kitchen, so that it looked like an oven had exploded or something. You could see the spot from the sword fighting arena, and the cabins, but we hid it enough so that it didn't look planned. I had just turned into a small beetle so that I could tunnel under the dirt, and attach a wire that Leo had told us was the trigger. Any slight disturbance, and it would cause the vial of greek fire that we had hidden in the bush to explode. Leo had found a way to turn the normal green fire orange, so that it looked like regular fire. He had also given us a remote that was connected to the wire I was burying. When we were ready to activate it, I would hit the button, and as soon as Alabaster walked by the sensor would go off, and the explosion would happen.
"Jason," I started once I had turned back to human. "What if this doesn't work?"
As Jason looked at me, a flash of worry and doubt shined in his eyes. It was quickly replaced, though, with a neutral mask.
"Frank you don't need to worry, nothing is going to go wrong."
His voice sounded so confident I was almost convinced that this was going to work. Key word: almost. There was a sinking feeling in my chest as I hooked up the last of the wires and slipped the remote into my pocket.
I checked my watch and saw that it read 4:21. We were going to turn on the sensor a little before 6:30 which was when breakfast started. That way the ovens will be on and everyone will be heading to the dining pavilion for breakfast. This is the only time I have been grateful that this camp doesn't have the plates that give you whatever food you want to eat.
Oh gosh. What if this doesn't work? I mean what if the ovens aren't even on when we activate the sensor?
It was going to be fine. This is going to work. Jason will save Alabaster, Alabaster will trust Jason, and we will use the trust to our advantage to cause some freak accident and leave with Nico.
Now all we had to do was wait. ——————————————————————————————————————————
I checked my watch. 6:14. I think we should be good to turn on the sensor now.
"Jason," I whispered from where we were sitting at the picnic tables. "I think we should turn on the sensor soon. Alabaster is over in the arena, but he should be able to see if one of the people or monsters set off the bomb."
Jason sighed and checked the time. 6:15.
"I think you're right." He said. "Can I see the remote?"
"Sure."
I carefully pulled the remote from my pocket and handed it to him.
The remote looked confusing. On it was a series of different colored buttons. I'm assuming that was because Leo used this remote for several of his other inventions. I'd seen it before. He always keeps it in his tool belt. On the bottom of the remote was a larger button that said ON in bold letters. There was also a note underneath it in English.
Jason stared at it for a moment before throwing his hands up in frustration. "I can't read this!" He exclaimed.
I was surprised at first. Jason was always this strong leader, who always follows the rules, and even though he is no longer praetor, he is basically Camp Jupiters role model. I forgot that he — like most other demigods — had ADHD and Dyslexia. I on the other hand, was the abnormal demigod who did not have those things.
"Don't worry I'll read it." I said.
He handed me the remote and I squinted to read the tiny, messy handwriting.
"Press this button when you're ready to set off the explosion."
I was about to press the button when Jason stopped me.
"Wait," he said. "What if he meant that as in as soon as we press it the thing will explode?"
I hesitated.
"It shouldn't be like that." I said. "I mean Leo specifically told us that it will sense something, and that will set it off."
Jason sighed.
"I guess we just have to trust his word."
I gently pressed the ON button. When nothing happened I let out a breath that I hadn't realized I had been holding.
Suddenly I heard talking coming from about 30 feet in front of the trap.
"Jason!" I whispered frantically. "Whatever you do, don't summon any water. I'm probably going to run up and help you once I get over my 'shock'."
Jasons face suddenly clouded with worry.
"How am I supposed to put out the fire without any water?"
I opened my mouth to respond, but didn't get the chance to, for the bomb finally exploded. I was thrown backwards of the bench of the picnic table, but Jason held his ground and jumped up. Alabasters shocked form started running towards the fire, but he was no where near close enough to help. Jason on the other hand had already rushed over to try to help the demigod girl. The monster had dissolved into dust, as it had gotten most of the impact of the explosion.
Jason rushed over and hauled the girl to her feet. Her leg was badly burned and she cried out in pain. Jason supported her weight as he carried her away from the fire. I rushed over there, and started trying to put out the fire. I hadn't quite thought through the facts that it was nearly impossible to put out greek fire. Water barely even helps. The fire started to spread and consume everything, and I was forced to retreat. I risked a glance at Alabaster who had stopped running. He was standing about 15 yards away from the fire, but his attention was not on the chaos happening in front of him. Instead it was on me and Jason. His eyes seemed to be boring into my soul. He gave gave me a withering glare, before running to help put out the fire.
He seemed to realize that the fire was not just any normal fire. I mentally cursed myself. How could I be so foolish! Of course he would notice the fire was different! I'm so stupid!
Alabaster pulled out one of his Mistform Cards (A/N If you haven't read the Son of Magic, the Mistform Cards are Alabasters main weapon. They can turn into different objects. One example of this would be an imperial gold sword. He also has a Mistform protector named Dr. Claymore. He hates the Greek gods, he fought with the Titans during the second titan war. Just to clear things up, in the Son of Magic he clearly states "It's better not to think of them as gods. The best way to think of them is more like a divine mafia. They used their threats to force my mother into accepting their deal. And in the process, exile me from camp so I can't 'corrupt' my brother and sisters. But I'll never bow to the Olympian gods after the atrocities they committed. Their followers are blind. I'd never set foot in their camp, and if I did, it would only be to give that son of Poseidon what he deserves." so I'm not making a good character bad.) and threw it into the fire. The fire started to glow as Alabaster pulled his spell book from a satchel around neck and started chanting. Everything that had happened in the past five minutes started to reverse. The fire died down until it retracted back into bomb form. Alabaster stopped chanting and put his book away. He stalked over to the bomb and yanked it out of the ground. The now deactivated sensor did nothing to stop him, as he stalked over to Jason and pulled out another card.
Alabaster said something in a language I didn't recognize and threw the card at Jason. Jason yelped as he fell to the ground, chains covering his body. Alabaster stalked over and hauled him
to his feet. His Mist protector Dr. Claymore held Jason in place as Alabaster pulled out another card preparing to throw it at me.
"Go!" Yelled Jason. "Go back to Camp, and get help!"
I gave him one last look trying to tell him that I will be back to rescue him, before turning into an eagle and flying off into the oblivion.
——————————————————————————————————————————
I was on the verge of falling out of the sky when I finally saw Camp Half-Blood in the distance. I had been flying for hours nonstop unwilling to give up.
A few minutes later, I finally arrived at camp. I descended till I was a few feet in front of the Big House before turning back to human.
I barged in the door startling the cabin leaders and Chiron, who had been in the middle of a counsel meeting.
"Plan went wrong." I wheezed. "Jason was captured. Nico still there."
I managed to get all that out before falling into unconsciousness. ——————————————————————————————————————————
Yay! I actually updated pretty quickly! I'm hoping that chapter was better than the last ones. I have an amazing beta-reader now (who is actually my friend Elb25) who is helping me with my stories.
Also thank you so muck Wolf Pack. That was so encouraging. Thank you for understanding. What genre or story thing, whatever its called, will your new story be under?
See you guys later!
