"He just doesn't understand, he'll never understand," Hermione sobbed, throwing herself to the sandy ocean floor. Her tears mixed with the salt. Suddenly the floor beneath her began to spin. She gasped, but didn't even have the time to scream as the ground opened.

The whirlpool pulled her down, finally leaving her on a hard stone floor of the cave below. Hermione picked herself up and looked around. She'd heard about there being caves beneath the sands. They were part of a long lost city that had sank and slowly become claimed by the ocean. This must be part of that city, she realized.

Slowly, she started swimming around, looking at everything. There was wall lined with strange things. She picked one up and opened it. It was rectangular in shape and once it was opened, it seemed to crumble. A word swam to the back of her mind, a word for something she'd heard about on the surface world; book.

"Book, these must be books," she laughed, pulling out another one. This one didn't fall apart as quickly. The leather thing holding it together stayed together. Hermione gently ran her fingers over the words, the pictures on the page.

"The Gods once ruled the world above," she read. The page started to crumble as she read. She quickly tried to look at the picture below it. Her eyes widened. She'd seen him before! The God they were talking about.

"My dearest, shall we spend tonight together?"

"But if my father were to find us together, he would kill you."

"You can't kill a God, my beautiful Hermione. You may be a mortal, but my dear, if I had the power I would make you a Goddess."

"And what would I be Goddess of, my love?"

"You would be the Goddess of beauty and truth and light."

"You tease too much, Severus."

"I would do that for you, if I only had the power."

"Maybe you are not the God you claim to be, if you can't even grant me immortality?"

"I can grant you this though!"

Hermione shrieked as Severus pulled her down to the ground, kissing her over and over. The pair lay on the cool grass looking up at the sky.

"I love you, even if you are a puny God."

"And I love you, even if you are a mortal."

The stars sparkled, little diamonds against a black velvet sky.

Hermione blinked. She was back in the cave, holding the remains of the book in her hands. The pages had all fallen apart.

"Severus? Who is Severus?" she asked, the name making her heart swell.

"I loved you," she added, sinking to the sand. She had loved him, hadn't she? But how could that be? She wasn't a human girl with long legs and bronzed skin. She was a mer with a long golden tail and sea kissed skin. She'd never walked on land, never laid on what she could only guess was some kind of surface seaweed.

"I wish I knew what that was? A dream? It felt so real," she whispered, noticing it was starting to get dark. She knew even though she and her father were fighting, she still needed to get home before dark. There were things out there, in the deep, that waited until the dark of night to venture out. She did not want to meet one of those such creatures.

She was almost to the palace when she saw him. He was swimming in the distance. His long hair forming a cape as he swam

"It's getting dark, you shouldn't be out here!" she called, swimming towards him. He didn't appear to have heard her because he just kept swimming further and further from the safety of the palace. Hermione gave one last look at her safe home before quickening her strides and chasing him.

She'd finally managed to catch up when she realized how wrong she'd been. His tail was glittering with scales like hers. No, it was rough and grey, like the sharks the circled in the waters. She froze, about to turn around, swim home as quickly as possible.

"You can't hide her forever, you old fool! I will find her."

"And you'll die trying in every world, this one and the next. You may be a God, but she shall die over and over until you've learned your lesson."

"You're the one that needs to learn a lesson, Albus. Love is more important than your power, my love for Hermione will triumph over everything, and I will make her a Goddess, I will love her forever. Together, she and I, we will live forever in our happiness!"

Hermione shook her head. Another dream, memory? What did they mean? She realized the shark man was staring at her. Her brown eyes met his black ones. They were the only part she could see of his face. He wore a traditional face shield, this one in the form of a hammerhead shark. It covered the top of his face, leaving his mouth revealed.

She shuddered, thinking about the tales she'd been told about the sharkmen. They would rip your throat open and feast on your blood. They murdered anyone who came in contact with them. They were beasts, horrid creatures warped further by the darkness of the deep sea trenches which they came from.

"Well, go ahead then, rip out my throat," she challenged, sounding braver than she felt. There was something there. Something that wasn't quite fear, something she couldn't explain. He stared at her, looking her over before smiling and revealing his three rows of jagged pointed teeth. Hermione tried to swim, tried to move her tail, but shock kept her treading water in that one spot. He swam closer to her, his nose sniffing her. She could feel his breath on her neck.

"You," he whispered, swimming back from her. Hermione blinked, trembling.

"What about me?" she finally found her way to asking. He looked at her, gently pulling the helmet from his head. Long black hair floated in front of his face. He pushed it aside. Hermione gasped, nearly fainting from the shock. Swimming before her was Severus the man, no the God from her visions.

"You're real?" she whispered, swimming to him, circling him. Her entire body seemed to fill warmth, a strange feeling coming over her. She wanted nothing more than to kiss that teeth filled mouth.

"I am, and I have found you again, Hermione, my Hermione."

"But how is this possible? Who are you?'

"I have had many names, you called me 'Severus'. I am the God of the dark, of the night. The God of revenge and the storm."

"You promised to make me a Goddess, you loved me, and then... then he ripped me from you," she whispered, her voice soft.

"You'll never find her this time, Severus. This time, she won't even remember you if you find her."

"You can't take her memories, Albus. She will always remember me, if the eyes do not see, if the mind does not remember, the heart, the heart will never forget. Once I find her, this time, this will be the last time. I finally have what I need, the one thing I need to make her mine forever."

"You're a fool, Severus, a weak fool. Love shall be your undoing and I will laugh once you realize it."

"Hermione?"

"Severus. My Severus, my God, my love. I remember, I remember so much!" she cried, throwing herself into his arms.

"I'm glad you remember, it makes things easier. In the past, you have not remembered, not until it was too late. We still have time in this life, time together."

"I thought you were my enemy."

"I have always favored the dark, my Hermione, as you should remember."

"You said I'd be a Goddess of light, your light. I remember someone named Albus, he ripped me from you, cast me into life after life, feeling lost."

"You are lost no more, my love. You shall never be lost again. I have found a way to make good on my promise. I shall make you a Goddess to live forever with me."

"Is shapeshifting going to be one of my godly powers? I would very much like to walk on the sands again, to feel the sun again?"

"Yes. Once you are immortal, you shall be able to do everything you dreamed."

"There is only one thing I'm dreaming of in this moment," Hermione said, kissing Severus passionately, a gesture he returned instantly. Around the them the waters swirled, tails splitting into legs, bubbles bringing them to the surface. Hermione finally broke the kiss as the morning sun graced her face. She looked at Severus.

"Welcome to immortality, my love," he whispered, kissing her again.
