Kyle's POV
I rolled over, annoyed with the buzzing on the table. It was Matt's phone, I probably shouldn't answer it. I yawned and reached over just to silence it and say Chloe's name on the screen.
"Hello," I said keeping my voice lower as I stepped around Matt and out to the balcony.
"Hey, where's Matt?" Chloe said.
I glanced back at him through the glass door, "He's asleep. You banged him up pretty good, he's still recovering. Why?"
I couldn't lie to Chloe, he was in pretty bad shape still.
"I wanted to know where you guys were at, I was hoping to see everyone."
"Chloe you know we can't come into werewolf territory," I said avoiding the answer for quick second. I didn't know how to explain to her what was going on with Matt. I was the only one who was able to see him right now, everyone else was in a room across the hall. In Matt's efforts to try to heal, his magic would lose grip on maintaining his human form. The girls caught a glimpse of it in the car yesterday and freaked out, he made us stop at the hotel and get two rooms so they wouldn't see it happen again. Matt only let me stay with him because I was nothing more than human, I mean other than being a ghost, so I had no concept of what he was and what it meant.
"No no I meant I'll come to you," she said.
"Ohhh wow I'm dumb," I laughed. "Well we were going to Tess' but we're in Kansas right now. We had to stop for Matt, he couldn't handle the car ride."
That was as much detail as I wanted to say.
"Ok, I'll let you know if I can make it."
After we hung up, I quietly stepped back inside and shut the door, set his phone down on the nightstand in between our beds, and slipped back under the covers.
Matt rolled onto his side and immediately started coughing. He needed to stop doing that until his broken ribs healed. I got up and grabbed him a bottle of water, by the time Matt was done coughing his skin was doing the thing again where it turned colors. I handed him the water.
"Who was on the phone?" He asked after taking a sip.
"Chloe was checking up on you," I said. "She wanted to know if we were close enough that she could come see you."
Matt chuckled weakly, "What did you say?"
"I said you were recovering still," I answered.
I sat on the side of his bed and adjusted the pillow that was holding his broken arm still.
"Remind me why we can't get you casts?" I said.
"Because give me a few days and I won't need them," he answered.
I looked at his bruise covered chest, "You're sure that you took care of any internal bleeding?"
"Yes Mom," Matt rolled his eyes. Or should I say eye, one was still swollen shut.
I stood up, "I'm going to get you some breakfast."
Before I was out of the room, Matt had already dozed off again. I walked across the hall and knocked softly on the door. Simon answered it. He put a finger to his lips as he stepped aside to let me in. The girls were still asleep. I swiped a juice box before stepping out onto their balcony with Simon.
"How's he doing?" Simon asked after he shut the door.
I shrugged, "What you'd expect I guess. I don't really know supernatural stuff."
"So, like he fell out of the sky still?"
I nodded chuckling, "Yeah I guess so."
I opened the juice box and practically drank the whole thing in two sips. "What do you thinks next?"
Simon shrugged, "Matt probably will want a break from hunting for a while. I don't think we're ready to be off on our own, so I guess we wait for him or we find something new."
"Like what?" I asked.
Simon stood there thinking, "I don't know." He said finally. "Life shouldn't be about waiting for the next adventure and that seems to be what its become about. We wait for that next adventure or we try to lead more normal lives. Derek and I were taking college classes before all this, I've got my high school diploma. I could get a job somewhere and maybe be able to afford an apartment or something for us. Tori could finish school. You guys… don't really need school."
"That sounds boring," I said, it was a decent and safe idea but it just sounded boring. Why would a ghost pretend to lead a normal life? People would notice that I didn't age.
"Yeah," Simon nodded. "But if we can't hunt and don't want to do boring, what's left?"
I thought for a minute, trying to come up with some smart mouth response that would make Simon laugh. I had nothing.
We changed the subject and chatted for a little while longer. Then I decided I probably really should get Matt something to eat. Simon and I went down to the breakfast bar and fixed up plates. We weren't technically supposed to leave the area with food but we snuck away with our plates and went back up to the rooms.
I told Simon I'd come back over to their room later to watch a movie or something, then went into Matt's room. I walked in to find him sitting up in his bed.
"Hey whoa whoa what're you doing?!" I rushed over.
"Testing to see how well my ribs healed," Matt grumbled, cranky that I took so long to get food.
I set the plate down next to his leg, "You healed all your ribs already?"
Matt slowly leaned back and laid down, "No just a few."
"Here, eat then," I nudged the plate. "You need it."
I piled up a few fluffy pillows behind his back and head so he could sit up slightly to eat. I turned on the tv and flipped through channels so I wouldn't be staring at him as he ate. When I finally glanced over halfway through a show, I realized he'd fallen back asleep and half a piece of toast hanging out of his mouth. I couldn't help but quietly laugh at it as I pulled the toast from his lips and set the plate on the night stand.
