Annabeth POV
Annabeth sat in the Big House, at a ping pong table, facing Chiron, Grover, Olive and Percy.
"Chiron, we all saw it. There's no mistaking it - she's mortal." Percy exclaimed when the centaur voiced his disbelief.
"Kelp Head's right - how could we not have checked all the signs? We didn't even test if she could understand Greek!" Annabeth was frustrated in herself.
"It's not surprising we didn't pick up on it - she has most of the features of a demigod: ADHD, a step-parent, seeing through the Mist. No wonder I couldn't pick up a scent." Grover's comment seemed to calm Annabeth, but she was still disappointed in herself.
Olive POV
Olive watched them all discuss the situation before they came to a final conclusion.
"She can stay here, but one thing is sure," Chiron began, "Olive is no demigod."
She couldn't take it anymore. Olive scraped her chair back and sprinted out the door, running through the fields. She ignored the strange looks from campers. All her life Olive had looked for a place to belong. She was always unwanted, whether it be by her parents who left her at the foster home, by the school children teasing her or by her teachers, saying she was disruptive. She thought she'd finally found a place where she belonged, but even here she didn't fit in. An outcast once again. Didn't matter where she went - she would never find her home. The only place she felt truly herself was around Jazzy, but she couldn't exactly run all the way to San Francisco from Manhattan!
Olive hadn't been watching where she was going, but looking up she found herself at the mouth of a cave, the entrance to which was concealed by red curtains. Olive tentatively reached out a hand and pushed through, finding herself in a torch-lit living room of sorts, with a rug and a few couches, one of which was occupied by a red-headed girl. She was just deciding to head out when the girl spoke.
"Hello. I'm Rachel Elizabeth Dare. Need to talk?" The girl piped from the couch. Olive turned around. For some reason she felt like she could trust this strange girl in paint splattered overalls. Olive relaxed and sat on the seat opposite Rachel.
"Yeah, thanks. I'm Olive, by the way."
"Nice to meet you, Olive. You seem stressed. Everything okay?"
Without meaning to, words began to tumble out of Olive's mouth. She explained her situation, how she never knew her parents, and they'd just left her there at the foster care center without another thought. How she'd never really fit in with anyone, and then she met Jazzy. How she finally thought she'd found home at camp, only to find out she still wasn't good enough. Rachel just sat a listened, occasionally brushing her hair with a bright blue plastic hairbrush. Olive finished with a sigh.
"So yeah, that's me I guess. I'm sorry you had to listen to me whine about stuff - you probably think I'm just some dumb mortal."
Rachel smiled. "Mortals aren't dumb - I should know. I am one."
Olive looked at her in disbelief. "You're mortal? Then how come you are here?"
"I, uh, I'm the Oracle of Delphi..."
"Wait, like the prophecy-teller thing? Woah... but, how does that work? Are you like, half human half prophecy dude?"
"Basically the Spirit of Delphi takes over every now and again, but otherwise I'm totally me the rest of the time. See, even mortals are important. We aren't all weak or ignorant - you seem pretty brave from what you've told me. And strong, too." Rachel smiled at Olive, making her feel better.
"True, but what else can I do now? There isn't exactly another prophecy spirit waiting around for someone to host it, and I won't be fighting monsters anytime soon." Olive looked at her shoes.
Rachel shrugged. "Why not? I hit Kronos in the eye with this hairbrush once."
Olive's jaw dropped, and her head snapped up. Rachel's face was totally calm, as if this was a normal thing. "I'm sorry, WHAT? You mean, the TITAN LORD Kronos? THAT DUDE?!" Rach nodded. "Ok, I need a story time here!"
And so the two mortals laughed and joked into the early hours of the evening, sharing stories until dusk, before heading to the Big House. Olive smiled. Maybe, just maybe, she had found home with the strange girl in paint-splattered overalls.
real cute chappie :))))) i had no plan to bring rachel into this story at all, and i know the vote on my profile had leo as the winner, but i felt rachel really understood olive's situation and was the right person here so yeah shes here now lol
