Tom POV
Tom was confused. He hadn't seen Annabeth or Olive since Friday. It was now Monday. Or Percy, for that matter. Tom bet it had something to do with their new friend Grower, or whatever his name was. Weird.
Annabeth POV
Annabeth walked up the steps of the school on Tuesday morning with Olive and Percy, thinking over the weekend. It was so nice to get back to camp and have a time away. She had missed everyone - even Clarisse, who gave her a bruised arm when she saw Annabeth. Olive and Rachel had got along well, which made Annabeth happy. She was glad someone was there who understood Olive's situation and helped her get through it.
But now they were back at school. And without Grover. ugh. He had Lord of the Wild duties to attend to, and couldn't afford to spend anymore time away. Alas, they still had to find the demigod too. Annabeth just hoped they would find them soon so that life could get back to normal. Well, as 'normal' as it ever was for someone who is a child of a deity.
They split different ways and got things out of their lockers before heading to class. As all of the people in their group had English, as soon as she walked in with Olive and Percy, they were bombarded with questions.
Tom was worried and slightly mad, that was easy enough to tell. Hayden seemed mostly confused. Jasmine seemed slightly hurt, which Annabeth presumed was due to the fact that Olive left without telling her.
"Why did you leave?"
"Where did you go?"
"Why didn't you tell us?"
Percy held out his hands, but everyone kept talking. Annabeth put her fingers in her mouth and was going to whistle when the teacher arrived. Everyone shut up and got back to their desks. Olive gave a sigh of relief, which was understandable. They would have to think of a cover plan and quick. At least they had until recess, or so Annabeth thought, until a note was slid onto her desk.
Where were you?
- Tom
Annabeth scribbled an answer and slid it back.
Our summer camp. We had an emergency - one of the cabins set on fire.
It was a lame excuse, she knew, and Tom seemed to agree.
That's a lame excuse. He scrawled. Why did they need you guys?
Annabeth thought quickly.
It was Percy's cabin and they needed him to make sure nothing was damaged.
Tom frowned.
But why did Olive need to come?
He had her there. But no challenge is too hard for a Daughter of Athena.
We thought she might qualify to go to the camp so decided to bring her along.
Olive leaned over Annabeth's desk and quickly snatched the note before she could slide it back to Tom. Annabeth looked at the changes.
they them
We thought she might qualify to go to the camp so we decided to bring her along.
Annabeth shuffled towards Olive. "You use they/them pronouns?"
Olive blushed. "Yeah."
"Oh no, I have no problem with it, it's just helpful so I don't use the wrong ones." Annabeth gave Olive a smile. "Thanks for letting me know, though." (LGBTQ+ represent!)
Tom leaned in and joined the conversation. "So why did you bring Olive along? I never got the note. Also should I call you Olive or do you prefer something else?"
Olive shook their head. "No, Olive's fine for now. And they brought me along because they thought I might qualify for the camp. Turns out I didn't, but it was fun to visit anyways." Their eyes lit up. "You should see the activities they have there! And the strawberry fields are gorgeous!"
The teacher looked their way with a glare. "Pay attention, back table!" The three of them shrunk back into their seats. The note passing resumed.
Also Annabeth I need to talk to you.
- Tom
Annabeth frowned.
What about?
She quickly looked at the worksheet in front of her. Easy. She knew this stuff when she was ten. The tell-tale sound of paper on wood let her know a response had arrived.
Just... something. Sorry, I know that's vague. I'll explain at recess.
Annabeth was puzzled, but got back to doing her work. The only reason she didn't finish in time was because the letters were shifting on the page. Stupid dyslexia she thought.
Tom POV
At recess Tom pulled Annabeth aside and grabbed the article out of his bag.
"Look, I know Percy's your boyfriend and all, but I just found this and wanted to warn you." He showed her the paper and she began to read it. "I just don't want you getting hurt, and from what this says, Percy's trouble."
There was an awkward silence whilst Annabeth finished reading. Then did something completely unexpected. She laughed. Snickered, even. Tom was annoyed. "What? What is it?"
Annabeth slowed her laughter to look at him. "Tom, I appreciate you worrying, I do. I know you're looking out for me, but really, Percy is the last person on earth who would hurt me. I'm serious."
"But he was part of a nation-wide manhunt! They think he killed his step-father!"
"Yes, but his step-father was abusive. Tom, trust me, Percy won't hurt me."
Tom was mad. "But how can you know?! Annabeth, come on! I thought you were smarter than this!"
Annabeth's eyes steeled, and Tom gulped. Wrong thing to say. "Look, Tom, I know Percy. Way more than you ever will. He will never hurt me. I know you are trying to be a good friend-" Ouch. Friendzoned. "but you need to lay off of him." Tom opened his mouth to say something but she cut him off. "You notice how it said there were three twelve year olds?"
Tom nodded.
"One was Percy, as you know. One was also Grover. And the third one - can you guess who?"
The pieces began to form together in Tom's mind, but Annabeth beat him to it.
"That's me, Tom. I've got nothing to be afraid of."
And with that absolute bombshell, she walked off to the cafeteria.
