Rachel (not me, the character) POV
Rachel tucked her bright blue hairbrush into the pocket of her shorts as she left her cave, blowing out the torches as she went, signalling her absence. She was on her way to the Big House, to ask Chiron about... something.
Then she got distracted by three figures outside the big blue wooden building. A girl with curly blonde hair, a guy with raven-black locks and a blonde boy. The last one she didn't recognize, but the first two she definitely did. A massive grin spread across Rachel's face.
"ANNABETH! PERCY!" She yelled, but they didn't hear her. "ANNABETH! You're home!"
Annabeth looked towards her and gave Rachel a big smile, before sprinting across the grass and tightly hugging her.
"Hey, Rach." Annabeth said, pulling away. "How have you been?" Annabeth used to be quite wary of Rachel, knowing her former feelings for Percy. But Rachel didn't like him like that anymore (and she was the Oracle anyway), so the two had become rather firm friends.
"Eh, same old, same old. Still going to Clarion's School for Hoity-Toity Brats, but we end a week early so I, of course, came back to camp."
Annabeth made a face. "Ugh. How do you stand it in there? I would judo-flip every one of those 'princesses' on the first day."
Rachel giggled. "Well, I've found a couple that are actually quite nice. Not as good company as all our camp friends though- Oh! You okay there?" Annabeth had fallen into a large hole, which was obviously hand-made. She grit her teeth.
"I swear one day I will get my hands on those Stolls and teach them a lesson." Annabeth said, glaring at the ground. Rachel gulped. Not smart to get on Annabeth's bad side. "I presume they've come to camp early too?"
Helping her up, Rachel nodded. "Yeah, I think it might be just your school that finishes this week. Maybe because you're on the other side of the country." Annabeth considered this, and seemed to think it made sense. "So," Rachel began, "Who's the new kid?"
Annabeth looked over her shoulder and quickly scanned the camp, most likely on the lookout for Stolls to strangle. "You mean Tom? One of my school friends. We recently found out he's a demigod and a grandchild of Apollo."
"Ew." Rachel was slightly disgusted, realising what that meant. "Isn't that super weird though? Like a demigod and god having a kid?" She thought about it in her head for a second, but then shrugged. "Although I guess it's not that weird in the scheme of things. This is Greek Mythology we're talking about."
Annabeth nodded. "Exactly. Still not sure who his godly parent is, however. My money's on Nemesis or Cupid. Or perhaps Iris, now that I think about it. Honestly, this one's tricky. It's definitely a minor god." She got lost in thought and Rachel waved a hand over her face.
"Hellooooo? Earth to Annabeth?" She called in a sing-song voice before laughing. Annabeth playfully punched her shoulder (which still hurt, mind you), and asked,
"So, why were you heading to the Big House?"
Rachel tried to fight the blush off her cheeks (and failed). "No reason."
Annabeth caught her expression and nudged her with her shoulder. "Ahhhhhh, I know that expression."
"Wh-what do you mean?"
"Don't try to deny it. Spill. Who?" Annabeth stopped and put her hands on her hips, looking indignantly at Rachel.
She sighed. "Fine, but you can't tell anyone. I... I was going to the Big House to ask Chiron if Olive would be coming back this summer." Annabeth squealed, then slapped a hand over her mouth. Rachel's eyes went wide. "Did- did you just squeal?! Oh my gods, I have to tell Percy about this. How is he by the way?"
Annabeth, still blushing from the un-Annabeth-like squeal, wagged a finger in her face. "Uh-uh. Don't try to change the subject on me, missy. So you were going to the Big House, to ask if Olive was coming, because..." She moved her hand in a 'go on' motion and Rachel rolled her eyes.
"Yes, alright. Because I like them." She blushed firetruck red, and Annabeth gave her a one-armed hug before stopping.
"Wait.. but you're the Oracle. Which means... oh Rachel."
She nodded, and Annabeth enveloped her in a massive hug, swaying slightly from side to side. Annabeth didn't need to finish the sentence; Rachel already knew the end.
Which means I can't date anyone. She thought bitterly. Rachel used to think of the whole 'no dating' thing as a perk, because it meant much less drama. Besides, she hadn't liked anyone since she took on the role of Oracle.
...until Olive came along. Rachel was torn. On one hand, she really wanted to be with them, which meant stepping down as Oracle. On the other hand, she couldn't just abandon her duties and the role she'd been given, for one person. She voiced these options to Annabeth.
"-and it sucks because I don't even know if they like me back, and even if by some miracle they do, it might not even work out and I just- ugh." Rachel picked up a stick and threw it as far as she could. It felt good. "I'm so pathetic. You guys have fought in two freakin WARS and I'm sniffling over not being able to date someone who probably doesn't even like me back."
Annabeth stiffened. "Rachel, look at me. You are not pathetic. You are the mortal who threw a gods-damn HAIRBRUSH at the Titan Lord Kronos. A HAIRBRUSH. At a TITAN LORD. Everyone goes through things, but the size or scale of your problems does not make it any less important or valid. Okay?" (A/N This goes for all of you! You shouldn't feel your problems are insignificant because they're not as bad as they could be. just puttin that out there)
Rachel nodded. "Okay. Wanna go mess with Percy?"
Annabeth grinned. "Ahh, there's the Rachel I know. And to answer your question - of course! C'mon!"
And they raced off towards the camp, about to make Percy annoyed. Again.
