Tom POV
Tom was, simply put, angry. At first he had been absolutely devastated and mortified with embarrassment. He seriously thought about moving to another country. Or the Moon. But after he ignored his friends' offers of help, got up and stalked out of the school gates, all that was left was rage. How come this was happening to him? What did he do to piss off the universe so much that he got such a crappy life? I mean, sure, he'd bullied kids in elementary school, before he moved to California. Everyone was mean at some point or another! He was a changed person, and he was better than all of them. She doesn't deserve me, Tom thought as he kicked a pebble violently across the sidewalk, but I deserve her. I'm kind and loving and deserve to have her. For her to love me.
But how could he make that happen?
"I know how." From an alley beside him came a voice, rather sharp and cold, but regal in a way. Tom whipped his head around. He hadn't said that outloud...
"Who-" Gods-dammit Tom, get the squeaks out of your voice. Sound cool. Tom reprimanded himself mentally before continuing. "Who are you? And how are you reading my thoughts?"
The voice chuckled, and Tom could see the outline of a shadowy figure standing in the darkness. A woman. "Ah, Thomas. You always were so naïve. Thinking she'd love you for just being yourself? Please. You'd never get anywhere with her. Not without my, services, per se."
Tom gulped. How the heck did this lady know everything? "Show yourself, woman, or I'll come over there and make you!" He smiled internally. Strong, confident and threatening. This lady must be shaking in fear.
"Now, now, Thomas, let's not be rude." She said, stepping into the light. The woman had an angled jawline and sharp cheekbones, with hair drawn into a tight, high bun. She wore a red, flowing toga, with a gold belt sinching her waist. The lady gave Tom a chilling smile. "That's no way to talk to your mother."
*OOP LINE BREAK*
No one's POV in particular
Percy, Annabeth and Olive jumped out of the car and quickly climbed the hill to the crest of Camp Half-Blood. Leo quickly spotted them and excused himself from the conversation he was in, jogging over. "Hey guys," he said, giving Percy a pat on the back and waving to the other two, "Glad you're here. I think this was really a wake-up call for us - security's gone slack since Dirt Face went back to dream land."
Annabeth wrung her hands out, but Percy put his on top of them, calming her. She sent him a grateful smile. "I just don't understand how this happened. And who try something like this?"
Percy sighed. "We never seem to stop having enemies. Let's just hope it's not a primordial deity this time, eh?" He grimaced. "Leo, give us a quick rundown again. What exactly did the campers see?"
Leo took a deep breath and repeated what he told them through the IM. "Basically, two campers were walking to the strawberry fields when they saw a figure in black run up and attempt to take it off the tree. They soon backed off after trying, however, and ran away before Pepper and Talitha could confront them."
Olive spoke up. "Could we speak to them? The witnesses, I mean."
Leo nodded. "Pepper's an Ares kid and Talitha's a Mania one. You could try those cabins?"
"Thanks." They turned to Percy and Annabeth. "C'mon, yall. Let's go talk to some girls about a fleece."
They found Talitha and Pepper in the Mania cabin, looking at something on their phones. Annabeth gave a polite knock and they turned around. The girls looked around fourteen. Pepper had dark skin and long, dark brown hair in a ponytail. Talitha was rather pale, and she had an abundance of curls which flowed around her shoulders like a curtain.
"Hey," said Pepper, shuffling to face the trio. "I presume you guys are here about the Golden Fleece?"
Olive nodded. "That we are. We were wondering if you could describe the person a bit more for us, maybe give us a bit more detail? Anything would be helpful."
Talitha and Pepper shared a look before shrugging and offering them a seat. The Mania cabin was painted a dark purple on the inside, and torches with translucent, white fire hung on the walls, illuminating the constellations drawn in white paint on the ceiling. There were desks with varying levels of clutter, as well as a couch, and papers featuring strange writings and runes. Through the doorway three bunk beds could be seen, placed in an L shape. Off to the right was a small room, which was covered in torn paper, ashes and strange, semi-opaque gloop that none of them particularly wanted to know the cause, or name, of.
Talitha noticed their confused expressions and smiled. "That's our testing room. For... stuff. It gets a little messy sometimes." Annabeth, Percy and Olive took a seat. "Here's what happened. Pepper and I were talking a walk to the strawberry fields, hoping we could get some of the really ripe ones before they got snatched by the dryads."
Pepper nodded. "Dryads love getting the best berries. Stupid dryads. Anyway, we were jostling around, like usual, when all of a sudden I saw a figure sprint towards Thalia's tree."
"I was confused at first, until I saw him too." Talitha continued. Olive put their hand up, as if asking a question and the girls chuckled. "What?"
"You said him. Do you think the culprit is a male?" They asked.
"Yes, we do." Pepper said. "We started running, of course, as soon as we thought that he was a threat. Unfortunately, we just weren't fast enough, but we were close enough to see the person's face." She indicated to Talitha to continue.
"Half their face was covered, but you could tell it was a guy. Which narrows it down-"
Annabeth finished the sentence with her, "-to a lot of people." Percy sighed, and ran his hands through his hair.
"Did you guys get a look at any another distinct features?" He asked, but the girls shook their heads.
Annabeth stood up. "Ah, well. Thank you for your time, guys. You've been a great help." Pepper and Talitha smiled, before heading back to whatever they were doing as the trio left. They were only just out the door of the cabin when the two began arguing about something with raised voices, but anyone could tell it was only a friendly argument.
Percy took Annabeth's hand and turned to face the other two. "Let's go talk to Chiron, shall we?"
