Chapter Fifteen: You Never Leave Someone Behind. You Take a Part of Them With You and Leave a Part of Yourself Behind

~Unknown

Welcome to the fifteenth chapter of When Wishes Come True!

Answering reviews!

writingficsandbreakinghearts: okay, I'll put that in (in another chapter, though... sorry). Yeah, Biana is so underrated! Pretty much all the girls in KotLC are (except for Sophie, who is—in my opinion—overrated), though. And thanks!

HersheyChocolate0611: honestly, I can see most Jamie ships working (mainly because I know how Jamie, as a person, changes), but Jiana is probably one of my favorites :)! Also, I know, right? But we're all mad here... (yes, that was an Alice in Wonderland quote...) Thanks!

Thank you, everyone!

Recap: okay, I cracked a few jokes, embarrassed myself in front of a gorgeous elf... Basically, it was a normal chapter. Also, Sophie and I are having a talk—not The Talk, but a talk.

At least, I hope...

ONTO THE NEXT CHAPTER!

One wall in Alden's office a large, curved window overlooking a silvery lake, and a rather fancy floor-to-ceiling aquarium wrapped around the rest of the room. But Jamie doubted that he brought both her and Sophie here just to show off his office.

Actually, maybe he did...

At least, she wasn't completely ready to rule out the possibility; elves did love to show off...

She heard Sophie (who was sitting in an enormous wingback chair like Jamie) suck in a breath before pointing to the stacks of (human [yes, she felt the need to specify that]) newspapers. "Keeping up with the news?"

"Looking for you two." He removed another two newspapers from a drawer and handed Sophie one article and Jamie the other. Her picture was circled, she noticed (and also ugly, but she did her best to not pay attention to that), and when she peered over, she saw that some of the articles were circled in red but also crossed over.

"You don't know who sent these to you?" Sophie asked him.

"I have a few theories. No reason to worry."

Did she mention how annoying Alden's trademarked statement was getting? If she didn't, she was mentioning it now.

Sophie seemed to be having similar thoughts, because a hint of irritation crept into her voice when she said, "You keep saying that."

"Because it's true." Alden insisted.

Jamie arched an eyebrow, lifting it high with skepticism and disbelief. Right. And she was a bright pink elephant with wings.

But Sophie just sighed, seeming to give up. Maybe that was smart; from what Jamie had seen and the little she remembered, the Vackers were stubborn people in general.

"Well, if you figure it out, maybe you can find out how the reporter knew about me. My parents were super upset about it."

Obviously, Sophie was the one who that. Jamie didn't even have parents, for KotLC's sake!

Jamie was actually about to crack a joke about that—but then she noticed how Alden's face fell. The words died on her lips.

"I think I know what you're going to say," Sophie said, stopping Alden the second he opened his mouth. Jamie held back a sigh of relief; although she was relieved that she wouldn't have to see Sophie's expression while Alden explained, she didn't want Sophie to think that she knew and potentially lose whatever trust she had—especially when there were so many reasons that she didn't even deserve it in the first place.

"You're going to tell me I'm not related to my family."

Oh.

That's what she thought.

And while it was true...

"Yes, I was planning to discuss that." Everything about Alden was solemn; his eyes, his expression, his tone... "But what we really need to talk about is why you can't live with them anymore."

Alden was at their side in a second, and he took both of their hands comfortingly, even though Jamie didn't need it. Yes, she was confused; if she wasn't going to live with that woman, where would she live? On the streets? She had a sneaking suspicion that that wasn't as cool as the books made it seem.

Or...

Would she live in the Lost Cities?

Truth be told, the prospect of living in the mansions of the Lost Cities was exciting. Scary and intimidating too, but mostly exciting.

But... would she ever get to see Zoe again?

Better question: how could she ever see Zoe again?

It wasn't as if shooting stars flew around everywhere, granting the wishes of everyone. She didn't even know why her wish was granted; back in the human world, she wasn't anything special. In fact, she had to try hard to get noticed—not to get attention, but to be registered as someone who existed. She was the opposite of Sophie: Sophie tried hard to be invisible, but all the attention was on her, anyway. Jamie tried hard to be simply seen, and people normally didn't even realize that she existed.

But when you set all comparisons aside, the truth remained, raw and vulnerable, like a new would.

She was probably never going to see Zoe again.

Yeah, I know, it's a really short chapter. I was going to make it longer, but it felt weird to not end the chapter here. In my defense, some of the actual chapters in the actual KotLC book are, like, two pages long. No , since that was so dramatic, questions!

1. Favorite quote (I'm going to put this question in every chapter from now on, by the way)?

2. What song do you think suits Jamie? Let me know the artist, too.

Remember, vote on the poll! Right now, JamiexFitz (I have no idea what their ship name is; Jafitz? Fitzie?) is winning with... drumroll pleaseone vote! I know, so impressive! But thanks, whoever voted :).

And, remember; please review!
