Chapter Twenty: Wear Clothes That Matter

~Solitaire Townsend

Reviews:

writingficsandbreakinghearts: yeah, her stubbornness is kind of annoying. Then again, I also made her stubborn on purpose because we already have one Mary Sue (Sophie Foster—not that there's anything wrong with that), so I guess I can't complain... Thanks! Jafitz is great :D It's also the only ship I can write right now since the only other person Jamie could possibly be shipped with is Sophie. I mean, there's nothing wrong with them falling for each other, but I think they make better friends... Anyway, thanks for reviewing!

Jem: okay, I'll add your vote in!

Me: aww, thanks!

luntix3: my ships are: Team Foster-Keefe (duh), Diana (or Dex and Biana), Lylie, and—I know it's not a very popular ship—Tarella (Marella and Tam). I don't really ship Fitz with anyone...? Thanks for reviewing!

Recap: okay, so, my cells are healthier than Sophie's somehow... And Fitz and I are... friends? What?

ONTO THE NEXT CHAPTER!

Jamie awoke with her forehead pressed against the side of her pencil and her drool making a tiny puddle on her notebook. At first, she ignored it; what was the big deal? She wanted to sleep, and drool was just spit—

Then, she realized what she was thinking.

She frantically wiped it away; she was not going to allow her pride and joy to be covered in spit!

Then again, if she left it there, people would be less likely to touch it...

She shook her head and rubbed her eyes. Her vision was still blurry from sleep. After carelessly shoving her notebook to the side, she flopped back onto the bed. She didn't feel like going back to sleep, though.

Jamie had never been a morning person. She normally just snoozed her alarm and went back to sleep until Zoe threw ice-cold water on her and smacked her face with the jug in the way only best friends could get away with. In retaliation, Jamie'd chase Zoe around the house with her toothbrush and threaten to gouge out her eyeballs if she ever did that again. Then, Scott (Zoe's dad) would scream at them to shut up. The next day, it would happen again. It was their daily routine.

Jamie smiled at the memory. She and Zoe were crazy. That much was obvious. But they were crazy together, and that's what made it okay. Chaotic, of course, but still okay.

After freshening up, she threw her door open and sauntered out of the room the Vackers had lent to her. Obviously, the exaggerated swagger wouldn't be there if she wasn't alone in the hallway.

Correction: the exaggerated swagger wouldn't be there if she knew that someone else was in the hallway.

"Morning, Jamie."

Jamie spun around to see Sophie. She forced herself to not blush for being seen acting stupid in front of her; although Sophie may have thought that they were best friends, they weren't. It wasn't being there was something wrong with Sophie or anything; they literally only knew each other for two days. Maybe you could become best friends with someone in such a short amount of time in kindergarten, but Jamie wasn't in kindergarten, thank you very much.

"Morning, Soph!" Jamie chirped, the nickname slipping out along with the forced cheerfulness.

Sophie raised her eyebrows. "I didn't know you could be so... energetic in the mornings."

Jamie just grinned, wondering the same thing. Jamie was multiple things in the horrendous thing called the morning—murderous, grumpy, and tired being some. But energetic? In the mornings? Sure; and she was a Tyrannosaurus rex. Maybe she was extra energetic because she was in Keeper of the Lost Cities...

Together, the two girls wandered around in silence. Well, Jamie was really just following Sophie. She wasn't entirely sure what Sophie was looking for (probably for Fitz, Della, Biana, and Alden), but she doubted it was some evil ancient artifact that would summon a demon-and even if it was, it would definitely make things interesting.

But when they found the living room in the mansion called Everglen, Jamie almost had a heart attack. There were clothes. Everywhere. It looked like some fancy store that lurked in malls to draw in poor, unsuspecting customers and sold hundred-dollar t-shirts had thrown up on the furniture.

And the worst part?

Nothing was normal. Jamie couldn't see a single pair of jeans, a single t-shirt, nothing.

Why was this world so weird?

Fitz was the first to see them. "They're alive!" he teased. He was sitting in an overstuffed armchair and reading a book. The title read Twenty-Five Ways to Catch the Wind. "You guys slept through breakfast and lunch, you know."

And here Jamie was, congratulating herself on waking up on time.

"Really?" Sophie looked around, presumably for a clock. "Sorry."

"You both had a rough day yesterday. Plus, your body needs rest while it detoxes." Della excused as she materialized in the center of a room like a glamorous ghost. Then, she frowned. How are you doing?" Della asked them.

Jamie debated on whether or not she should sarcastically list all the synonyms for "fantastic" she knew, but eventually decided against it. She settled for a shrug.

"Well, you both look great. I mean, you were both pretty before, but I think that detox made a difference. Jamie, your skin is practically glowing, and Sophie, you should see how shiny your hair is. And both of you're eyes are so... exotic. Jamie, your eyes are like cinnamon. Sophie, yours are so... warm. Believe me; you're going to be quite the heartbreaker when you grow up."

"Who is?"

Of course, that was the exact moment Biana walked in. She was wearing a fitted dress with intricate gold embroidery, looking more gorgeous than any twelve-year-old had the right to look.

"Sophie and Jamie." Della smiled. "Don't they look so pretty?"

Biana shrugged, showing that she was not impressed. "Did either of you change your dress?"

Jamie blinked. Why would she think that? It's not like it was true or anything...

Okay, fine, it was true, but she didn't have any other clothes!

"All my other clothes were—" Sophie started to explain, but Della cut her off.

"I'm sorry. I should've sent something up. I've been shopping all morning." She waved her arms at the explosion of clothing everywhere. "Behold. You're new wardrobe."

Jamie's jaw dropped.

Look, it wasn't like Jamie was living in poverty. She had a fair amount of belongings. At least, she did before she was isekai-ed; her belongings were conveniently left behind.

Anyway, back to the point at hand; why did she need so many clothes? Was she supposed to be wearing five outfits a day?

Then, she paled, because holy KotLC, that was totally a possibility. Elves were so lavish, they probably did wear five outfits.

Then, she realized how stupid it was. It was way too impractical. They probably only wore two outfits; one being normal clothing, the other being pajamas. And potentially three, if you wet your pants—um, if you spilled something.

"That's all for us?" Sophie asked incredulously.

Della winked at them. "I got you everything you need, plus a few extras." A few!? "The only thing I didn't get was a new nexus. I figured you'd want to pick your own. Unless you want to keep those old, beat-up ones."

Jamie frowned as she examined the fashionable-but-necessary bracelet. The gold crystal glimmered in the light. These were supposed to be old? They looked brand new.

"Did these belong to someone else?" Sophie asked.

Della nodded. "The teal one used to be Fitz's, the golden one Biana's."

Jamie raised her eyebrows at Biana. "This used to yours?"

Biana nodded, making her dark locks flutter.

Jamie shrugged. "This one's fine."

Biana frowned. "Are you sure you don't want something... prettier?"

"Do you want this?"

"Well, no—"

"Then I may as well keep it, right?"

Biana didn't say anything, but Sophie agreed.

"If that's what you want." Della smiled radiantly. "I should be all done done packing all these in a few minutes, and then I'll get you some lunch."

Jamie was about to offer her help (not in sucking-up way; there were just a lot of clothes), but then Sophie joked, "Packing? Are you kicking me out?"

At least, she tried to make it sound like a joke; a touch of hurt still leaked into her voice.

But Della, being the kind woman she was, rushed to take Sophie's hands in hers. "Of course not. We thought you'd want to get settled into your new home. If you want to wait a few days, we'll unpack your stuff right now."

"No, it's fine." Sophie said before adding, "In fact, I don't even want lunch. I'm not hungry."

Della smiled sadly. "You're going to like Grady and Edaline."

They said something else, and Alden joined the conversation, but Jamie wasn't paying attention. It wasn't a big deal, anyway; she'd remember it if it was important.

Besides, she was more concerned with the name that was stabbing at her head:

Brant.
