Chapter 5: Chapter 5
Giselle was an early riser; it was an old habit cultivated in Avalon where every priestess would wake up before the sun rise in order to get more energy from it. It was 5am and she was the only person awoke at the house. After carefully walking in order not to disturb Ginny and Hermione, who were sleeping soundly in their beds, Giselle moved downstairs to the kitchen. On the stove, a kettle with water was coming to a boil, and right next to it set her special English Breakfast tea blend that contained some of the herbs that grew inside the Avalon well, the ones that could provide clarity of mind, and for some people, visions of what could be. She was observing the kettle when her line of thoughts went down the memory lane of her previous life.
Oh, Paris. Before she was transported to Gringotts and then Hogwarts from one timeline to another, Giselle was living in Paris with her parents.
They all lived at Rue de Dragon nearby an entrance to one of the magical villages of the city, Le Grand Dragon; living on the muggle part of Le Grand was a security choice. Giselle owned and operated an apothecary at the Montmartre magical area and sometimes she just apparated back home, but on the beautiful long summer times her preferred method took longer: cycling from Rue du Dragon to the upper part of Marais; and then taking the bus up to Montmartre; she would take the same route to go back home, sometimes extending her time in the margins of the Seine.
Of course, life had not always been that easy... During the war against Voldemort in France her main role was of a spy for the side of the light or as the French would call it: L'Ancien Gouvernment (The Old Government); people that still believed in the values of the revolution: Libertè, Egalitè, Fraternitè ou la mort, literally: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity or death.
People always new that the Dark Lord was going to return, and since Giselle was ten she was trained to became a spy.
Why this girl? You might ask yourself. She was the daughter of the union between the Lis Blanc from her dad side and the Le Fay, from her mother side. Which means that Giselle was the witch born in that time, that had the purest blood. She was a legacy, and if the old world stayed as it was, she would be the equivalent of the next queen in terms of lineage. Contrary to muggle history, where you could simply kill the ruling king or queen and substitute the government for a new one, the lineage in the wizard world meant something else. Giselle most famous recent relative was Morgane de Le Fay. All magic in the wizard world was related to the Le Fay, they were considered the original wizard lineage, and all magic that affected humans were thanks to them. The Lis Blanc family was a very powerful family, one of those that people could trace a pure bloodline since 1037, people who occupied positions of power throughout the years and that accumulated a lot of goods. For both sides of her family despised the pureblood ideology, they ended up finding each other and getting married. After a long period trying, they requested the Lady of the Lake in Avalon to assist in the completion of a gestation, for all powers they had, they were only human. The Lady agreed, as long as the child could be educated in Avalon.
For years Giselle lived with her parents, it was the week before her 10th birthday when the Lady of the Lake dropped by her parents' house to claim the girl that was promised. The all knowing Lady recommended that they moved back to France, where she guaranteed that they would live a good life and would be needed. Giselle moved to Avalon on July 27th, the day of her birthday. At Avalon she trained under the tutelage of the Lady of the Lake herself. Up until her 15th birthday, Giselle would visit her parents regularly. On that date, the Lady felt it was time to explain to Giselle the role that she might have to take on the times that were coming ahead, she saw darkness in the future and Giselle's training took a new focus. As Giselle became an adult, she was prepared with the best Occlumency, power and knowledge to volunteer herself to the new Dark Lord that was coming to power in France, a British man that called himself Voldemort, Giselle was to become a Death Eater.
Giselle apparated back to France surprising her parents that haven't seen their kid for the past two years. Oh, they were so happy to see her arriving at home, but that state of glory was fastly substituted by an argument. That argument grew louder and louder, and soon the family was screaming at each other in the middle of the streets. Giselle spatted pureblood nonsense on her parents face, accused them of being week and trying to restrain her powers and possibilities. All of that was just a scene created by Giselle to get the Dark Lord attention, since she knew her parents were being observed by his spies, however, her parents knew nothing of it. After she arrived in the new apartment and made sure that everything was secure, Giselle cried for her parents. Cried because she knew they though it was them letting her stay in Avalon that made her that way, and because they were not completely wrong.
One week after her tantrum a very elegant owl arrived with a note containing an invitation for a meeting in a chateau not far from Paris. It was signed by Lord Voldemort. As she took the envelope and finished reading it, another owl came through her wards carrying a port key. As it turned blue, Giselle took a deep breath and grabbed the small ball in her hands.
She landed – elegantly - inside a big salon with medieval tapestry and paintings, for most people it would look a little scary, but Giselle was unfazed by it. She lived in France for a while and had travelled around, some places just had a thing with the medieval period. The people inside the salon, however, were much scarier than creepy paintings of decapitated people with angels surrounding them. About 12 men's, all of then wearing the Death Eaters robe's that everyone heard about and dreamed of never putting their eyes on.
Giselle waited on the doorstep to be called forward, because in under no circumstance a pureblood wizard or witch would enter in a social gathering, even if the social gathering consisted of murderers, without being properly announced, especially a Le Fay.
"Ha!" a scary single laugh of contempt echoed the room "She's too much of a pureblood to enter unannounced" at this comment Giselle just raised one single eyebrow at the charming man that looked at her with hunger in his eyes "Please welcome to Mrs. Malfoy chateau Mademoiselle Le Fay."
With a small smile on her lips and a nod to the Dark Lord Giselle went inside the room where every member bowed to her, she nodded her head to every single Death Eater present in the room, when lifting up their heads they regarded her with respect, desire and a little fear. Most of them have never been in the presence of a Le Fay, for many, it was the first time that they felt the pull. One of the differences between the am basically royalty in the wizard world and the muggle is that any time a Le Fay was announced by full name, all magical beings present are compelled to bow to this person. It was a part of some old rite that all magical families signed up a long long time ago, and no one ever thought about – or even knew how – changing it . With a smirk Giselle started a conversation with the man that invited her there.
"My Lord, I felt very happy when I received the invitation to this gathering..." a melodramatic pause was something she despised but it had its uses, every weak characters appreciated it and most of Death Eaters would see as a power play with their Lord "But unfortunately you letter did not clarify what you expected of me..."
"My dear, I just wanted to get to know you and your opinion on certain things..."
"Surely my opinion is not of that value my Lord; I'm only a young woman with an interest towards potions..." a grin spread through the young woman's face as she was sure that it made her look like a lunatic "And if it's about potions I'm afraid that one evening won't suffice..."
At that comment a chuckle was heard coming from one of the hooded mans, it was a surprisingly soft and beautiful sound. Lord Voldemort smiled at his guest of honor.
"Mdm. Le Fay..."
"Please my Lord, if you could give me the honor, call me Giselle" said the woman adding a shy smile for charming purposes
"Of course, of course. The honor is mine, Giselle. As I was mentioning, I wanted your opinion on certain things, unfortunately not potions from now, but maybe latter?" he smiled cheekily at his own playfulness "I want your opinions on traditions."
"Oh, traditions? Sure, I can talk about that..".
He sat back at his chair - or was it a throne? - and his followers conjured chairs so they could sit down as well. Giselle was in the middle of the enormous saloon completely surrounded by crazy sociopaths; and everything felt right, because this it was what she has been trained for. And with a hint of a smile on her face, the small woman grew in presence and took the room as her stage. She had to play the best act of her life.
"Well... I believe, my Lord, that traditions are really important. Without those, the culture of a race or a bloodline can't continue unscathed. My family for example, I'm blessed that my grandparents betrothed my parents together, my mom was a rebel once she come of age and could have corrupted the Le Fay bloodline by marring someone that wasn't part of a pureblood family." From her center stage, all Giselle could see was a half-smile on the Dark Lord's face, the faces of the Death Eaters were all covered since they all had their hoods on, so she went on with my pureblood supremacy elegant bitch ranting. "Actually I believe that she would have married a muggle if she could escape the marriage contract. She always said to me that she was lucky that she fell in love with my father."
Obviously, a family secret was kept secret, and no one knew about one of the most fascinating properties of the Le Fay blood. Every Le Fay born would be a pure blood, if taken the test developed by purebloods in the early 14th century that was sometimes, used by the more traditional families.
How? No one really knows it; the family suspects that something occurs in the placenta during the pregnancy. In "regular" pregnancies – muggle or magical – the placenta is an organ that its developed from the mother and father DNA, it provides protection and nutrients for the baby to grow up healthy. In the Le Fay family, the placenta acts differently, and more than 90% of the DNA of this new organ is from the mother. It's still a new field of study, but that's where we are at right now in terms of how.
The question of why brings up a different matter. Mostly the family believes that since the Le Fay's are behind every single branch of magical power that humanity (magical one) had, only breeding purebloods is the nature's way to ensure that magic will keep existing in the human world. That's why all females Le Fay took part in Beltane's festivities. There must be more Le Fay's around the world than everyone knows. Giselle herself had already given birth to one girl after her first Beltane festivities when she was 16. Of course, Beltane's babies are for other people to raise, they were always given away for other - magical or not - family.
Well, means that, in reality, it doesn't really matter if Giselle's mother married a muggleborn or a muggle. The child would be magical anyway and as pure as it can get...
And Giselle continued her rant "But for me it isn't luck is destiny, it's tradition; the purest of the bloods can't mix well with those who have their blood tainted by muggles. I believe in traditions, and I do not like those who diminish it importance or its value."
Voldemort gave the woman a smile tainted with envy, and really hoped that the self-entitled Lord understood that she felt that his blood was tainted and less worthy than hers. She was sure that every Death Eater felt somehow bellow her, after all, their families come from mine, my lineage is the center of the pureblood family's trees; but of course, apparently they didn't know that they were following a crazy half-blood with daddy issues.
"See my brothers and sisters? Tradition is power, tradition is our destiny as so well put by our dearest Giselle." He then turned to me with a soothing voice. "Giselle, your invitation here was not made only for you to expose your beliefs, I want to invite you to join me and my followers as a member of the Inner Circle of the Death Eaters."
That was the invitation that Giselle was working for, so she smiled brightly at the young man.
"I was really hopping that it would come to that my Lord, you honor me with your proposal. May I be so bold to ask you for a private audience before we agree on everything?"
It was a bold move to ask to speak privately, but it had to be done. Giselle needed to be able to impose herself as the most valuable person, and make him recognize that she was more than a simple follower.
"I would be glad to have a private audition with you my dear, of course you won't mind if one of my most trusted Death Eater stays with us in the room?"
"Of course not my Lord."
The kettle came to a boil and the noise ringed in her ears. Giselle smiled to herself while taking the tea pot from the fire. Surely protecting a 15 years old boy would be much less difficult than becoming a Death Eater.
