A New Light

It didn't take long, though, before Link noticed there was a limp in Epone's walk. She came to a halt on the field and examined the horse. He had a wound on his left hind leg.

'He must have scraped himself upon a rock under the water,' Link said and slid of the horse. Then she looked up and saw that they were outside the Lon Lon Ranch. She looked up at Sheik.

'I'll have to go to the Ranch. Epone can get help there,' Link said.

'And then we'll have to get to the castle,' Sheik said.

'The castle?'

'I believe Zelda can help us with the map.'

Link nodded.

'You go on, and I'll come later,' she said. He looked at her.

'You sure?'

She smiled and nodded, thought she really wanted him with her. But she was trying to hide her feelings best she could. Reluctantly, Sheik turned Tzadek around and galloped towards the castle. Epone gave a whinny after the steed, of whom he had grown very fond of.

'You big baby,' Link said softly, 'you'll meet her again later!'

---

Gimel was sitting on the pile of hay, a grass straw in his mouth, gazing out on the field where the steeds were grazing peacefully. The parting of their lead stallion didn't seem to hurt them much. Then suddenly one of them lifted her head and gave a high-pitched whinny. A shadow suddenly fell upon Gimel and he looked up to see Link standing there with Epone looking around at his old home, ears pricked forward in a curious way. The farmer noticed the limp in his back left leg.

'Sleeping on the job?' Link grinned.

Gimel stood up.

'Not that it is any of your business, but no,' he said with a wry grin. Then he looked at her, strangely glad that she was here.

'Didn't think you would come back,' he said, turning to Epone, examining him. Link looked at him in a strange way.

'Why wouldn't I want to come back?' she asked baffled. Gimel was her friend, her first friend really. She wasn't going to ignore him. Gimel looked at her, smiling happy.

---

Epone twitched his ears, but didn't bother more as Gimel bathed his wound in oil of healing herbs.

'So…' he suddenly said, breaking the silence, 'what's with this Sheik?'

Link looked up from where she had been standing by Epone's head, surprised by his question. Why does he want to know?

'He's… a good friend,' she smiled.

'A friend?' he asked, stepping up towards her, his hand on Epone's back.

'Yes,' she said, ignoring the meaning tone in his voice. Why was he acting like this? Then, without warning, he suddenly placed his other hand on Link's arm, and made an attempt to kiss her, but Link pulled back.

He immediately found himself, backing away. '…I'm sorry.'

'Gimel,' Link said softly. She did not want to break their friendship over something like this. 'You know, Sheik is just a friend, but that doesn't mean a need anyone else.'

Gimel looked down in the ground.

'You're a good friend, Gimel,' she said and placed and arm on his shoulder, 'please let us keep it that way.'

Then she leapt up on Epone's back, whom seemed perfectly recovered, and turned him around.

'Thanks, Gimel,' she said and Amon suddenly settled upon her shoulder, making her look very majestic. Then she drove on Epone with a shout and he leapt eagerly into gallop. Gimel gave a sigh, looking after her, before turning back to his duties.

---

Once out on the field of Hyrule again, Link sighed and pulled the reins so that Epone slowed to a halt. Her thoughts wandered in on Sheik. Is he a good friend? Or is he more than that? She could not deny these feelings she'd had on late.

Shaking her head confused, she shortened Epone's reins, ready to continue again. Then she suddenly realized that the air grew cold as the sun was setting. Epone began to dance nervously. As she shortened the reins he began backing, but as she lightened on the reins he jumped forward in a gallop with his head raised high. Something made him uneasy.

'Calm down!' she said to him but he didn't. A heart-freezing shriek suddenly echoed through the valley. Link gasped and realized what scared Epone. The Shadow Riders.

'Hurry, Epone!' she shouted to him as he leapt into gallop. The gate to the city was near. But then one of the dark riders appeared in front of them and Epone rose on his hind legs, whinnying, but not in fear, more like he was ready to attack the riders if Link wanted to. But the movement caught Link off-guard and she was forced to grab onto his mane to not fall off. The shadow rider shot out his hand and grabbed on to the reins of Epone. Four other riders appeared from nowhere and surrounded her. Epone neighed wildly, as they all drew their swords. Link saw no other choice but to defend herself, and she drew her sword in a attempt to scare them off, but they only laughed a chilly laugh.

'What are you going to do?' their leader hissed, 'Kill us?'

It was in that moment of Link's desperation, that a sudden bright light appeared from the sky. Link thought she gone mad as she saw men, with majestic white wings soar down the sky and attacked the riders. One of them suddenly grabbed Link and lifted her up from Epone. She looked at him and saw that his wings were the purest white feathers.

'You're… you're an angel!' she exclaimed to the man. He smiled and flapped his wings to soar higher up in the sky. His skin was smooth, with pale blue eyes, and long brown hair, making him look beautiful.

'Where are you taking me?'

But she got her answer as the angel landed upon a platform of half stone, half cloud. He gently put her down and she carefully placed her feet upon the stone, not sure if the cloud would bear her. She found that Amon had followed them and he settled upon her shoulder, looking suspiciously at the angels.

'Who are you?' Link asked the angel.

'My name is Gilraen. And this;' he said and made sweep out with his arm to the realm they had landed in, 'is the City of the Angels.'

Link looked around in amazement. It was a city in completely white, the rays of the sun reflecting on it, making it a city of light. Gilraen lead her up towards a stair to a great building, which seemed to be the castle in the city.

'Why did you save me?' Link asked him.

'We would not let the riders kill the Hero.'

'How do you know I'm the Hero?'

He looked at her and smiled.

'Because we believe it in our hearts.'

Then the stairs ended and Link found herself standing face to face with an angel with long brown hair and a slim silver crown on his head.

'Welcome, Great Hero, my name is Galad' he said, 'We have heard much about you.'

'You have?' she asked surprised. He smiled.

'And we have a gift for you.'

Another angel with blond hair paced forward with a cushion, and upon a bow of white and brown.

'This bow,' Galad said, 'was made by us on the order of the Sages. It never misses its target can never be destroyed.' Link took it in awe, and replaced her old bow with it.

'Please accept this other gift,' Galad suddenly said and picked up a quiver with arrows. Around the arrowhead a light surrounded it.

'This is the light arrows, and I believe that it will aid you greatly in your quest.'

Link accepted the arrows and didn't know what do say. Then she grew suspicious.

'Why are you doing this?'

'We want to help the Hero,' Galad answered.

'But you live in the sky! Even if Ganondorf took over the land it wouldn't affect you.'

'Yes, it would,' Galad said calmly. 'We are good friends with the people of Hyrule and their grief and despair would cast a shadow upon our hearts, unable for us to bare.'

'But,' Galad continued, 'we must not delay you in your quest, Ganondorf acts quickly. Where do you need to go?'

Link looked up, bewildered of the whole scenario.

'…The castle.'

'Very well, if you'd follow me,' Galad said and rose. Link smiled, the only way down was through a ride with the angels. It had been fun to soar through the sky. They came to an edge of the stone floor.

'This should be right,' Galad said, 'our magic will hinder your fall.' Link froze.

'My what?'

'Don't worry. This wont hurt at all,' Galad continued and Gilraen paced out.

'But…' Link started, but then he suddenly pushed her. She gasped.

'What? No, wait!'

But she lost her balance and fell screaming through a cloud. As she turned in the air she saw to her fear that she was falling directly towards the castle, with the high towers and trees. She broke right into one of the trees and landed hard on the branches, still falling fast.

'Oouch, ouch, ouch!' she said to herself and then she suddenly bashed into the wall of stone, then into another tree, and finally she landed screaming in a pond with a splash. When she looked up, surprised that she survived the fall, she found herself looking at the as most surprised Sheik and Zelda. Link sat up with a groan.

'So much for that magic,' she muttered. She was in the courtyard of the castle, where there was a beautiful garden, surrounded by a small pond. Sheik went to help her up, and he then pulled out a twig from her hair from the tree.

'I must tell you,' Zelda said and couldn't hide her amusement, 'this was the least entrance I expected you in.' Sheik nodded.

'We found Epone, and feared that something had happened to you,' he said, his tone worried.

'Well,' Link said, 'I'm all safe and sound, but not thanks to the angels.'

'Angels?' Sheik echoed. Link sighed and told the whole story about the riders and the City of Angels, but didn't mention the part of the Ranch, and Gimel.

'Well, you see what happens if I'm not there to help you,' Sheik said sarcastic.

'Shut up,' Link snapped and slapped him on the arm. He couldn't help to grin, since their quest didn't seem so dark once in the safe castle.

---

'I see no other solution than that the Temple the map speaks of is the Temple of Time,' Zelda said as she looked again on the map.

'The Temple of what?' Link asked.

Zelda smiled. She was wearing the dress she used to wear in public. It was light pink with long cloves. Around her waist there was a slim belt where there were markings of the Triforce and other markings of which Link didn't take notice off.

'The Temple of Time. Long ago, the Master Sword rested there. But that is rests under the castle?'

'Perhaps we should look around,' Sheik said. Said and done, they all went inside the castle to look. Sheik went last, behind Link and realized that he was still holding the twig in his palm. Reluctantly, he let it fell to the ground.

As they entered the room with all the paintings, Link got a better chance to look around. She found a statue of the legendary Hero's head and chest. As she looked upon it a great sadness filled her heart, as he was very like her brother.

'Let us go to the throne room,' Zelda said and interrupted her thoughts and she followed after her friends. Link looked around as she entered the throne room. It was a large round room, with a single throne in the end of it. Link suddenly realized as she stepped on the ground with her thin boots, that there was a small carving in the ground. She looked down, and saw that the carving was in fact a line. Her feet backed a few steps as she saw what the line formed.

A great Triforce was carved in the ground.

'Zelda?' Link started. She stepped back and saw what Link was seeing.

'This is a Triforce carved here for the Goddesses,' she said.

'But how does this help us?' Link asked. Then she suddenly saw a hatch in the ground and she went forth to it. But as she tried to open it, it didn't budge. She took her sword and jammed it through the spring and pulled. The hatch opened, but the sword broke.

'I have never seen that hatch before,' Zelda said as they followed Link down the hole.

'I doubt you've seen this too,' Link said below. As Zelda reached the ground she found herself in a small chamber, and in the middle stood Link, gazing up on a statue.

It was full-size statue of the Hero. He was holding the a replica of the Master Sword in the blade, handing the hilt towards Link, smiling. Without saying a word, Link took the grip, and suddenly a door behind the statue slowly opened. Link slowly went in, but as Sheik went to follow, Zelda stopped him.

'I think she needs to do this alone,' she said. Sheik looked after her.

'I don't think she'll need protection in there.' Then she looked at him; reading was he was thinking. 'But that is not why you want to follow her, is it?'

Sheik sighed.

'I care for her, Zelda.'

'We all do,' she said and placed a hand on his shoulder, 'we all do.'
