Why Do I always lose the Ones I love?

Link panted up the stairs that seemed to have no end. Finally a light appeared in front of her. She slowed down to a pace and pushed herself to the wall to keep from being seen.

All right. I have no Triforce. I'm alone. Great.

She moved closer to the light.

And I don't care.

Then she drew her sword and with one swift move, she leaped into the chamber, only to find that it was empty. She lowered the sword.

Where are they?

She looked around. A red carpet lead forth to an organ in the front of the room. The whole room had a sort of goldish color about it, a sort of royal feeling. After all, Ganondorf was The King of Evil. Then Link suddenly noticed a staircase that lead up to the roof. Without thinking twice she sped off to the stairs and up through the roof…

---

'Power. Isn't it an odd thing?'

Link sneaked up to the platform at the top of the tower. It was a round space, made of solid black stone with tins at the edge sticking up. The surface of the black rock was smooth, all the way up to the pointy tips of the surrounding tins. Ganondorf was standing with his back to Link, looking out over the land, talking to himself; not having noticed her yet.

'You think you have it,' Link took a step to her right, 'and then…'

Ganondorf fell silent as the step Link took made a noise. He spun around and his red cape danced around his legs.

Under silence he surveyed her up and down, until the words finally escaped his mouth.

'…Who are you?'

Link couldn't help to be sarcastic.

'Aw, you don't remember me?'

Ganondorf didn't reply.

'When you killed my brother?' the sarcasm left her and was replaced with hatred.

Suddenly a smile lit up Ganondorf's face.

'Now I remember you,' he said, 'the little girl who lost his brother.' He gave out a laugh. Then he surveyed her again.

'So you're the one who have been following the Hero!' A grin spread across his face. 'So that you could avenge him,' he said with a mocking baby voice and then started to laugh.

'Did you really think you could kill me?'

At this, Link smiled. She pulled out the Master Sword.

'As a matter of fact, I do!'

Ganondorf stopped dead as he laid his eyes upon the Master Sword.

A silence fell.

'This is impossible…' he started. 'All this time… you were Link. You were the Hero.'

A grin suddenly spread across his face.

'Yes. It all makes sense now. This is why I couldn't get anything out of him.'

A wave of chill suddenly rushed through Link's body. Sheik!

'What have you done to him?' she asked fiercely. Ganondorf grinned. Then he snatched his fingers and suddenly Sheik appeared beside him, bound with his own chain.

'Sheik!' Link exclaimed and made a move to run forth but realized that it would be wiser not to. He struggled to get lose.

'Let him go!' she turned to Ganondorf.

'As you wish,' he grinned and snatched his fingers, and the chain fell to the ground. Sheik's legs gave with and he fell to the ground, clearly wounded.

'If,' Ganondorf looked up to Link, 'you can catch him.' Suddenly he loaded up a huge energy bolt in his hand and threw it away at Sheik. He gasped as it hit him and was thrown over the platform and over the edge.

Ganondorf grinned. 'Oops.'

'Noo!' Suddenly everything went very slowly, and Link threw herself over the platform, managing to grab hold of Sheik's hand. He looked up at her.

'Link!' he said, surprised that she had caught him.

'What?' she panted, 'You think I'd just stand and watch you die? Not a chance.'

Suddenly they heard heavy steps behind Link. Ganondorf stepped up and placed his foot on her back.

'Link,' Sheik looked gravely at her, 'let go.'

She looked shocked at him.

'What?'

Then she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her back. Ganondorf took his giant sword and ripped her slowly on her back. She gasped in pain.

'Yes, Link, why don't you let go?' he grinned.

'No!' she said, biting her lip in pain, and held Sheik's arm firm.

'Link, let go. You have to beat him.' He gave a small smile, despite the sacrifice he was doing. Tears prickled down Link's face, due to the pain and what Sheik was saying.

'No! I won't let the same thing happen to you!' Then she screamed out in pain as Ganondorf ripped her again, slowly, torturing her.

'Don't think of me, Link. Do it for Hyrule. For your brother.'

Link looked at Sheik and slowly realized what she had to do. The tears ran down her face as the grip around Sheik's arm slipped, more and more, until she was only holding on to his fingers. Then with a last look on each other, the grip failed, and Sheik fell towards the ground.

Link clutched her eyes, crying, and thereby failing to see the pair of white wings that soared past below. Images of Sheik rolled past in her memory. Why do I always lose the ones I love?

Then suddenly a memory soared up in her head.

She was in Chamber of the Sages, talking to Rauru.

'Even Ganondorf believes he has killed the Hero. And there's where we have the advantage. The Hero is alive, safe and sound.' He smiled.

'Yet, before you can become the True Hero and defeat Ganondorf, you must first find the Power within you.'

Link frowned.

'What power?'

'Your courage. It will come to you once you defeat your fears.'

Link snapped back to reality. It will come to you once you defeat your fears. This was her fear. Losing the one she loved. And then lighting lit up the sky, hitting her, giving her back her energy. Then the light suddenly disappeared into a mark on her left hand. The Triforce of Courage.

She slowly rose, grabbing the Master Sword. There was only one thing that she could think of. It burned her heart. Revenge.

Even Ganondorf seemed taken aback by her sudden rage, but he quickly found himself again. He unsheathed his large sword, like Link drew the Master Sword.

They looked gravely at each other for a moment, as the rain started to fall, landing with small splashes upon the black stone. Then without a word, Ganondorf swung his sword, beginning the battle with the first blow.

---

Sheik's feet gently reached the black ground as he angel put him down. He turned around to face Gilraen.

'Thank you.'

As Sheik had been falling from the tower, Gilraen, one of the angels, had suddenly caught him. As the Sheikah looked up to the sky, he could see angels with pure white wings soaring down through the dark clouds, attacking the Ugluks. In the middle Sheik's sharp eyes caught Amon together with the angels. He soared lower and lower until he settled upon Sheik's shoulder. Once again the Sheikah was glad over the bird's quick thinking. Sheik suddenly looked up and saw lightning from the top of the tower. A battle was going on. He wished he could help Link but at this time he couldn't. For once he wasn't there to help her.

He lowered his eyes and ran off to find Zelda.

---

'Aah!' Once again, Link was thrown away from Ganondorf with the strength of his fist. She hadn't even got one clear hit with her Sword at him. Still, she was amazed by her power to stand up to his great sword. Once again she charged against him and their sword clashed together, and they looked at each other, trying to kill each other with their gaze. It only turned out that Ganondorf managed to throw Link away, and this time she slid over the black rocks and over the edge.

And then she was gone.

Ganondorf was suspicious. He was powerful, but he knew that it wasn't supposed to be this easy to kill the Hero. Still, she was, after all, a girl.

He went over and peeked over the edge only to be hit by a kick form Link, who had clung on under the edge. Ganondorf backed a few steps holding his nose, since that was where Link had hit him. She quickly took the opportunity to grab her sword and attack him.

But suddenly Ganondorf looked black at her, grabbed her right hand with tremendous strength, and with his right hand Link looked puzzled as he seemed to be gathering some kind of electric force in it. She suddenly realized what he was going to do and she struggled to get lose. But then Ganondorf grabbed her left arm, sending the electricity through her. She screamed in pain and dropped her sword. That move from Ganondorf should have killed her but the Triforce suddenly created a force field inside her, protecting her from too much damage. Still, it hurt a lot.

Finally Ganondorf let go, and Link fell to her knees, panting from the pain. He grinned, walking towards her, knowing that her sword was out of reach. But then Link looked up, grinning, as she faked too wounded to attack. She grabbed her shield and threw it hard at his face. Shieldless, she ran and grabbed her sword and stood up, ready to continue the fight.

---

Sheik ducked as an already wounded Ugluk lunged for him and it fell to the ground, never to move again. The battle on the ground was somewhat in chaos. Dead and wounded angels or Ugluks were lying everywhere. In some places the mountain caves started to fall together. Sheik knew that Ganondorf had many prisoners in those caves and he ran off to see if he could free anyone.

Zelda shot out her hand to another Ugluk and a blue light emerged from her hand in the form of a bolt, hit the Ugluk and sent him flying over the rocks, landed hard on his head and died. Zelda looked up to see lightning from the top of the tower and she hoped that Link would do all right.

Sheik squeezed through the fallen rocks; it was a good thing he was so swift or else he wouldn't have fitted through the ruined caves. Amon flapped his wings and jumped over the rocks on his claws. Suddenly he flapped his wings and gave out a shriek, to catch Sheik's attention. The Sheikah spun around to see the bird by a small entrance through fallen rocks. He gave a jerk as he suddenly heard a horse whinny from inside. Epone!

---

Link spun around to crash her sword once again into Ganondorf's one. He did an attempt to hit her with his free hand but this time she ducked and flipped her legs around on the ground, causing him to fall. She rose her sword, about to stab it into him but then he used his legs to kick her in her stomach. She dropped her sword and flew over the black stones, but managed to land on her feet. She knew power wouldn't kill Ganondorf so she had to use her brains. Her sword lay a few meters ahead of her, but Ganondorf was too close. If she would try to grab it he would surely stab her by the time she grasped it. Slowly she stepped closer to her enemy. He grinned and held his sword ready. The sword was only a couple of feet away from her but it would be impossible to grab it. And she was shieldless too. She looked up to Ganondorf and smiled. He looked puzzled for a flash of a moment, and then Link suddenly ran forth, kicked the sword so that it slid under the legs of Ganondorf, and at the same moment Link summoned her force to do a high jump in the air, flip over, and landed behind Ganondorf. And before he had time to react she grabbed the sword and stabbed him in the back.

'Aargh!' Ganondorf jerked in pain, stumbled forth a couple of steps and turned around to face Link. He looked at her for a long moment, and then he collapsed on the ground.

Link panted heavily, as she rested for a while where she stood, not sure if she wanted to face the fallen Ganondorf.

After a while though, she slowly stepped forth to him. He lay still on the ground, eyes closed. She regarded him with hatred, his dark skin and foul expression. Funny, she would have expected more when she killed him. A sort of satisfaction, or maybe even some explosions or something. Ganondorf didn't really give Link that really-dead-and-defeated-all-to-your-credit feeling, like the Shadow Riders had given her. She leaned closer, surveying Ganondorf, his red hair and dark skin. Then suddenly he shot up his eyes, causing Link to jerk in surprise, and then he hit her with his surprisingly strong fist, clearly using the Triforce of Power and electricity in his palm. Link flew over the platform and landed on the other side, beside her sword, and passed out for a second from the hard hit. She didn't wake up until Ganondorf had risen and planted his large foot on her chest, giving her problems to breathe.

He gave out an evil laugh.

'Did you really think I was dead?' Link gasped for air. 'Nobody kills me!' Then he shot out his hand and a stream of energy hit Link with such force that she was nailed to the stone. She screamed in pain. This was it, now she was sure to die. Her quest had failed. Hyrule would be destroyed. Images rolled through her mind: her brother, Amon, Zelda, Sheik, Epone, the Sages and suddenly, a memory stayed in her head.

'How do you know I'm the Hero?'

Gilraen looked at her and smiled. She was in the city of the angels.

'Because we believe it in our hearts.'

Then the stairs ended and Link found herself standing against an angel with long brown hair and a slim silver crown on his head.

'Welcome, Great Hero, my name is Galad' he said, 'We have heard much about you.'

'You have?' she asked surprised. He smiled.

'And we have a gift to you.'

Another angel with blond hair paced forward with a cushion, and upon a bow of white and brown.

'This bow,' Galad said, 'was made by us on the order of the Sages. It never misses its target and can never be destroyed.' Link took it in awe, and replaced her old bow with it.

'Please accept this other gift,' Galad suddenly said and picked up a quiver with arrows. Around the arrowhead a light surrounded it.

'This is the light arrows, and I believe that it will aid you greatly in your quest.'

Link suddenly snapped back to reality. The light arrows!

Despite the pain surging through her body she managed to reach back to her quiver, and grab on to one of the light arrows. As it reached the air, it flickered a moment before turning bright. Link grasped it in her hand, battling for a while against the pain and then she gathered all her force that was left to jam it right through Ganondorf's leg.

The pain in Link's body suddenly stopped and she jerked for a while, the black energy still in her body.

Ganondorf stopped dead, looking down at his leg. The arrow stuck out from his leg, at first not doing anything. Then slowly, the light spread out to his body, through his veins, spreading out the pureness from the goddesses themselves through his body. Finally he screamed and started to jerk with pain. He stepped away from Link, screaming, trying to get the pain and light out from his body. Suddenly his body was replaced with pure light for a moment. He screamed and then he fell to his knees, paralyzed.

Link, now on her feet, weak and panting, would not make any mistakes this time. She grabbed her sword, ran forth and with a shout she drove the Master Sword through his body.

Suddenly, it was as if everything fell silent. Slowly, Ganondorf looked up, rose very slowly and looked down at Link. Only the wind could be heard as he did an attempt to raise his sword but then his arm was suddenly shaking, as it seemed that a light tried to emerge from inside of him. The phenomena spread to the rest of his body. A great light was fighting to break through him. He grunted, jerking, and then his body was shot out to a stretch and the light soared through his body until it suddenly vanished in a tremendous explosion of light.

The explosion blew Link away over the edge, falling down from the tower. It was strange, as everything seemed to happen very slowly. But she was not afraid, it was as if all her feelings had vanished and she soared through the sky as if paralyzed, and above her she could see the light from Ganondorf's explosion…

---

Sheik pulled the reins of Epone to another direction as a falling boulder hit the spot where they had been standing the moment before. Suddenly a sound caught his attention. At the tip of Ganondorf's tower, a huge explosion of light emerged, filling up the sky. Sheik's eyes widened.

'Link!'

The tower and the land now started to collapse for real. It was the power of Ganondorf that had contained the land and now that is was gone, the land was being destroyed.

Sheik pressed the sides of Epone and he leaped in gallop over the rocks as Sheik desperately scanned the ground for any sign of Link.

---

Under a large pile of stone, dust, wood and dirt a hand could be spotted. A small light was beaming from it. Silence ruled. The light flickered again, greater this time and suddenly, the pile started to move. Link coughed and managed to remove most of the wood and dirt around her head and shoulder before she paused.

I survived. How could I survive!?

The light on her right hand flattered down to the Triforce on her hand. Link looked at it.

'I'm not going to thank you,' she said weakly to it, 'I have nothing to live for anymore. Sheik is gone,' – her voice broke, but she continued - 'and I've killed Ganondorf. Perhaps I would have rejoined with my brother if this hadn't happened…' She coughed again and passed out for a moment.

Sheik suddenly spotted a blond plait by a pile of trash and in one swift move he jumped off Epone and ran forth to the lifeless Link. She was breathing!

He quickly removed the stones and lifted her up in his arms. She coughed and opened her eyes.

'W…wha… Sheik?' she said, barely breathing in her weak voice.

'Yes, it is me!' Sheik exclaimed in his happiness to find her alive, 'I'm here.' He suddenly looked up to the tower by a noise and saw that it was beginning to fall apart.

'We have to get out of here,' he said and quickly sped over the rocks with Link in his arms, gently putting her on Epone's back and then he swinging himself up, holding Link, who was half gone and half there, and with the other hand he held the reins. Then he pressed Epone's sides and he leaped into gallop over the rumbling ground.

As the tower collapsed in a great cloud of dust, something else seemed to rise from the ruins. A black shadow. It soared over the ground, trying to escape, but suddenly it bumped right into an orb of light. The shadow quickly changed direction but it only resulted in that the shadow bumped into yet another orb of light. This continued until the shadow realized that six orbs of light surrounded it. Suddenly in front of the shadow Zelda appeared.

'Spirit of Ganondorf, meet your doom!' she said, her voice suddenly being full of power. The orbs of light suddenly took form as the new Sages. Link managed to lift her head and in her weakened state she in a blur saw six Sages, every one of them looking like the Ancient One's, but different in some way.

The shadow suddenly tried to escape up in the air but the Sages rose their arms and a light emerged from every one of them, hitting the shadow, and under many shrieks it finally disappeared.

Silence fell. Finally, Zelda spoke.

'It is over.' The Sages turned to the Princess and Epone with the two riders behind her.

'Ganondorf's spirit is imprisoned in the Seal of the Six Sages.' Zelda turned to Link, who managed to lift her head with great effort to face her.

'And the Triforce is now safe. It will return to its full shape, in the Sacred Realm.'

Link looked up and saw Zelda lifting her left hand and the Triforce of Wisdom left her, in the shape of a light, soaring up in the sky, where another light flickered; The Triforce of Power. Suddenly Link felt cold and she gasped as all her strength left her. The Triforce of Courage left her body and united with the other halves and in a light they united as one Triforce, and then vanished in a great light.

'You did it, Link.'

That was the last thing Link saw. With the lack of energy, the light filled her eyes in a blur, and then she could feel herself sliding off Epone, as the world around her grew dark.

Sheik's attention was turned to Link as he suddenly saw her body hit the ground. Epone took a few nervous steps as he leaped off him, suddenly worried. Zelda turned surprised to them. Sheik turned the cold Link in his arms and looked up to Zelda with terror in his eyes.

'…She's not breathing.'
