A/N: I'm sorry about not updating yesterday, but this chapter was a little difficult to write, specifically the second half, you'll most likely know why after you read it. Please Review!

Chapter 7 - A Close Call

Kate ran through the forest with hatred in her eyes, trying to locate her prey. She went to the feeding grounds and followed Miles' scent around the territory until she came across a clearing with three caribou grazing in it. Miles' scent went straight through the clearing and Kate huffed, "I guess I'm just going to have to hunt for the pack", she said to herself, "because nothing is going to get in my way".

Kate crouched down and sneaked around until she was downwind of the caribou. She slowly moved closer until she was almost right underneath the caribou, then she quickly jumped up and clamped her jaws on one of the caribou's neck. The caribou fell dead in a few seconds and before the others could even react to one of their own being killed, Kate pounced on another and slashed its throat. The last caribou saw its comrades on the ground dead and ran off in an attempt to escape Kate, but she ran after it and quickly brought it down. "There", Kate said, "that should be enough for the pack for a couple days".

Kate scribbled a message in the dirt, then continued following Miles' scent until she came across a stream and saw Miles bending down to take a drink. She smiled evilly, 'there you are', she thought to herself, as she crouched down, preparing to pounce.

Humphrey, Lilly, and Garth, were doing their best to follow Skye as she ran to who-knows-where, supposedly following Kate's anger. "Skye…wait for us!", Humphrey shouted, gasping for breath, "some…of us…aren't in…very…great shape!".

Skye stopped in front of a clearing and Lilly collapsed on the ground out of breath, "I can't…go any…further", she panted.

Garth looked towards the clearing, while Humphrey and Lilly regained their energy, "umm, guys?", he asked.

Humphrey and Lilly looked out into the clearing and saw three caribou lying in the grass with their throats slashed open. "This is where I sensed that great amount of anger", Skye said.

"Kate did this?", Humphrey asked, shocked.

"Well, she is Eve's daughter", Garth said, chuckling. Lilly shot a death glare at him and Garth whimpered, "I'm sorry, Lilly", he said.

The three of them went into the clearing and found a message scribbled in the dirt. Don't bother trying to stop me, you might as well take these caribou to the feeding grounds, because Miles will be dead by the time you reach me.

"Well…", Lilly said, after they read Kate's message, "what do we do now?".

"Kate has already found Miles", Skye said.

"How do you know that?", Garth asked.

"A feeling", Skye answered.

Garth sighed, "well, lead the way", he said, "you brought us this far, following…whatever it is".

Skye turned around in a circle, while seemingly looking into the distance. She stopped moving and pointed into the trees, "Mom's that way", she said.

"Then let's go", Garth said, then the four of them headed into the trees.

Miles took a drink from the stream, then he heard a growl from behind him, which made him widen his eyes in surprise. He turned around and saw Kate glaring at him with anger in her eyes, "oh, hey, Kate", he said, "been a long time since we've talked last".

"You hurt my daughter", Kate growled, "you deserve to die".

"Your daughter?", Miles asked, "I didn't know you had a daughter, who's the father?".

Kate glared at him, "she went to get a piece of caribou and you smacked her away", she growled, "twice!".

Miles remembered the pup at the feedings grounds and also remembered that she called Garth, 'Uncle Garth', which could only mean… "oh, no", Miles muttered, "look, Kate, if I knew that she was you're daughter, I would have never even thought about-".

"Save it!", Kate snapped, then pounced on Miles, pinning him to the ground, "I am going to put you through so much pain that you're going to wish that I am my mother".

Miles whimpered, as Kate raised her paw up to strike him, "Mom, don't!", Skye shouted, then she slammed into her, knocking her off of Miles. "Skye, what are you doing here?!", Kate shouted.

Garth came out of the bushes, "Kate, stop and think about what you are doing", he said, "will killing him make you feel better?".

Kate placed her paw on her chin and pretended to think to herself, "hmm, let me think…", she said, then smiled and unsheathed her claws, "yes".

Miles whimpered and ran behind Garth, "umm, do your thing, Sir", he said.

Garth shook off his startlement from Miles hiding behind him and looked back towards Kate, who was glaring daggers at the cowering Alpha behind him. "Okay, Kate", Garth said, trying not to show any fear himself, "let's just talk about this rationally".

"And what, Miles gets off without any sort of punishment for hurting my daughter?", Kate asked, then shook her head, "I don't think so".

"Miles will be punished for what he has done", Garth said, "I can assure you of that".

"I don't care what my punishment is", Miles whimpered, "I don't even care if it's Eve, just as long as it's not her".

"You're not helping", Garth muttered to Miles.

"Sorry, Sir", Miles replied.

"Okay, enough of this!", Kate growled, then jumped towards them with her claws outstretched, prepared to rip Miles apart. Miles shut his eyes tight and Garth prepared to take her down, but Kate was suddenly knocked aside by something small. Skye had jumped into Kate and pinned her down onto the ground, "please, Mom", she begged.

Kate tried to break free of Skye's grasp, but she couldn't, which took everyone by surprise. She looked up at Skye, "since when did you get so strong?", she asked.

Skye didn't say anything, instead she just continued to stare into Kate's eyes and she sighed, "I'm sorry", Kate said, "can you forgive me?".

Skye smiled, "of course I can forgive you", she said, then rubbed her head under Kate's chin, "I love you, Mom".

Miles still had his eyes tight shut, "am I dead?", he asked, "I don't hear anything".

Garth breathed a sigh of relief and turned around to Miles, who was shaking in fear, "you're not dead", he said, "but I'd get out of here and stay away from Kate, if I were you".

Miles hesitantly opened his eyes and saw Kate preoccupied with Skye, then he rapidly nodded his head and ran as fast as he could into the forest with his tail between his legs. As soon as he left, Humphrey and Lilly came out of the trees and collapsed on the ground, gasping for breath, "finally…we made it", Lilly panted.

"What did we miss?", Humphrey asked, as he tried to regain his breath as well.

"I'm sorry, Humphrey", Kate said, "I'm sorry for running off like that in a rage".

Humphrey chuckled, "I'm just glad it wasn't directed at me", he replied.

Garth eyed him suspiciously, "why aren't you tired?", he asked.

"I…carried him…here", Lilly panted.

"I carried you as well", Humphrey replied, "and for much longer than you carried me".

"You were…heavier…though", Lilly panted.

"You're not going to kill me, are you?", Humphrey asked Garth.

"No, because then Kate would probably kill me and that won't be good for anyone", Garth answered.

"You think yourself all high and mighty, don't you?", Kate asked.

"No, it's just if you kill me, one of the Pack Leaders, Lilly will be forced to either execute you or banish you, Kate", Garth said, "you know that as well as I do".

"Right", Kate muttered.

"And besides", Garth continued, "I think Lilly should decide your punishment".

Lilly smiled wickedly, which made Humphrey chuckle nervously, "Kate, come here for a second, please", she said.

Kate came over and Lilly whispered into her ear and made Kate smile and she tried not to laugh. Lilly pulled away, "is that alright with you?", she asked.

"Yeah, it's alright", Kate answered.

Humphrey and Garth looked at each other in confusion, "what's alright?", Humphrey asked the girls.

"You're going to be my personal carrier for the day", Lilly said with a smile. Humphrey looked at Kate in bewilderment, "and you're…okay with this?", he asked.

Kate shrugged, "it seems fair", she said, "she did carry you here".

"Did you not hear the part where I carried her longer than she carried me?", Humphrey asked.

Kate shrugged, "nope", she said, then turned to Garth, "did you?".

"No, I did not", Garth answered.

"And what makes you think that I will?", Humphrey asked.

"Lilly's one of the Pack Leaders", Kate answered, "you have to do as she says".

Humphrey turned towards Lilly, who had a huge grin plastered on her face, "you're enjoying this, aren't you?", he asked.

"Yep", Lilly answered.

"You remember that I'm the Omega Leader, right?", Humphrey asked.

"I remember", Lilly answered, "but I'm not an Omega anymore, I now outrank you".

Humphrey groaned, "fine", he said, then crouched down, "get on".

Lilly giggled and climbed onto Humphrey's back, "now, to the Alpha Den", she ordered.

"Are you going to be like that the whole day?", Humphrey asked.

"Yep", Lilly answered, "it's part of your punishment".

Humphrey sighed, "alright", he replied, then started heading towards the Alpha Den, while Kate, Garth, and Skye followed behind them.

Fenrir watched the group from the top of a nearby mountain, "look at what you've done, Tor, all of this is your fault", he muttered, "you just had to meddle in the affairs of mortals".

"Actually, it's not her fault, Fenrir", a male voice said.

Fenrir looked around, but saw no one, "who are you?", he asked, "show yourself!".

A golden mist swirled in front of him and a black furred wolf with white streaks of fur and golden eyes appeared. "Did you miss me?", the wolf asked, after the golden mist dissipated.

"I thought you were destroyed millenia ago", Fenrir said.

The wolf chuckled, "and yet, you don't seem surprised that I've returned", he replied.

"I know you always find a way to come back, it's always only a matter of time", Fenrir said, "now, what do you want?".

"I already told you", the wolf said, "it wasn't Tor's fault".

Fenrir snarled, "of course it was her fault!", he growled.

"Really?", the wolf asked, "because from where I sit, it looks like it was your fault".

"I don't ever make mistakes!", Fenrir growled.

"You always were stubborn, Fenrir", the wolf replied.

"Oh, shut up!", Fenrir growled, "it's Tor's fault, no one else's!".

"You know that my Foresight is better than yours", the wolf said, "everything would've been perfectly fine if you hadn't banished Tor".

"I did what I had to do", Fenrir said, "she broke the Laws of Nature and I dealt the punishment".

"Yet, you were never one to follow those Laws in the first place", the wolf said, "take me for example, I was created to bring peace during a time that the world's apex predators were at war, you and Tor could've both just let the world destroy itself and you wouldn't have cared".

"That was different", Fenrir said, "what was going on would've, as you said, destroyed the world, this was just the life of one she-wolf".

"Are you really that blind, that you don't see how important those two wolves are?", the wolf asked.

"What do you mean?", Fenrir asked, then snarled, "and don't think I'm asking because I'm doubting my actions!".

"Let me show you", the wolf said, then he prepared to wave his paw, but Fenrir stopped him.

"Unh unh, the last time you shared your Foresight powers with me, I was stuck in an alternate reality, can't you just tell me?", Fenrir asked, "it would save us both time and me the pain of trying to get back".

The wolf sighed, "alright, Fenrir", he said, "as with any new mated pair, Kate and Humphrey had pups".

"So?", Fenrir asked.

"King planned to invade the Eastern and Western Packs by luring the Alphas away from their territories and into his own", the wolf explained, "he did it by capturing Kate and Humphrey's youngest son".

"And if the pups didn't exist, it wouldn't ever happen", Fenrir said, "that doesn't change my mind".

"If the pups didn't exist, King would've still found a way to lure the Alphas out of their territories and King's daughter, Princess, would've led the Rogues to take over the eastern and western territories", the wolf explained.

"Then how does their pups make a difference?", Fenrir asked.

"The pup they captured made an impression on Princess", the wolf answered, "which made her decide to follow her heart instead of her duty to her father, in doing so, she defied her father and the Rogues fell".

"Why are you telling me this?", Fenrir asked, "you know I don't care about only one wolf pack in the world".

"King's rule won't stop there", the wolf said, "he will win as many wolves as he can to his side and will eventually control the whole of North America".

"You know, you're not giving me a good enough reason", Fenrir said, "I don't care about the lives of mortals".

"But you do care about your existence", the wolf said, making Fenrir gasp.

"What do you know?!", Fenrir growled.

"It's not my place to say", the wolf answered, "and I can't help you, this will be the last you see of me".

"Wait, what?!", Fenrir shouted, but the wolf was surrounded by golden mist and he disappeared. Fenrir grumbled to himself, "damn him!", he growled, "why does he have to be so cryptic?!".

A/N: Okay, the second half of this chapter, I've written, rewritten, and rewritten it again, until finally it made sense and wasn't 3,000 words long. Also my dad came home yesterday afternoon after driving Class 1 for two months and he'll be leaving again in a couple days, so I may not update for a few days. Please Review and I encourage anyone to give suggestions for the story.

Till next time,
