Fighting Destiny 6
Chapter 16 Wendy War
"
Wendy walked into Tara's office wearing navy leggings, a low cut baby blue ruffled tank top and a blue jacket. She'd accessorized her outfit with half a dozen gold colored chains, a pair of long dangling earrings and black stiletto boots. Her long dirty blonde hair fell past her shoulders in curls and she wore thick black winged eyeliner, dark red lipstick and a lot of blue eyeshadow.
It was typical Wendy, Tara thought. She was trying to be a professional something in her jacket, but the crow-eater was still there in everything else she wore. The low cut tank top, tacky chains and heavy make-up were typical crow-eater chic.
Jax confessed he'd married Wendy out of loneliness, but he could have found someone better to ease his loneliness with instead of her. Wendy always had a hardened look about her, but again that was standard crow-eater. Sweet, innocent girls didn't end up in the Sons' clubhouse or they didn't stay innocent for long.
"I heard you and Jax had a baby. So, I wanted to say "congratulations" for that," Wendy said pleasantly.
Wendy hoped to get Tara on her side and then approach Jax about seeing Abel. It was going to be an uphill fight, but she was clean and ready.
"You came all the way back to Charming to just say that? Really Wendy, I don't need your congratulations," Tara said.
Tara might have given Wendy a more civil reception if she weren't feeling the stress from having just talked to the police. She was also still on edge from the murder of the nurse.
She'd had some pity for Wendy even when she'd nearly killed unborn Abel with crank. She watched the baby go through withdrawal, heart and stomach surgeries and still felt compassion because she was pretty sure Gemma had given Wendy the syringe full of crank she had overdosed with when she was in the hospital.
That compassion left her when Wendy tried to get Jax back the night Abel came home from the hospital. She'd preyed on Jax's sympathy because she was newly sober and he hadn't wanted to do anything to "set her off" and lead her back to crank.
Wendy had just been a pawn in Gemma's hands. Gemma made the calculation that she'd rather have Jax with Wendy because it would be easier for her to control Wendy. Gemma had always hated her from the moment she and Jax got together in high school. She'd done everything possible to break her and Jax up, but using recovering crank addict Wendy was a new low even for Gemma.
Wendy smiled revealing she had dark lipstick on her teeth. If Tara had liked Wendy better, she would have tipped her off about the lipstick, but she said nothing.
"Now that you're a mother, you'll understand how I feel about Abel," Wendy began.
"I was a mother before I gave birth to Nate. I'm Abel's mother. I'm the one that fed him, changed him and took care of him when he was sick or scared. You chose drugs over him and almost killed him."
Wendy started to sit down.
"Don't sit down. You aren't going to be staying that long. What do you want Wendy?"
"I want regular visitation with my son. I'm clean, an addiction counselor now and a contributing member of society."
"You signed your rights away permanently," Tara reminded Wendy coolly.
"I've seen an attorney about that. I'd just been detoxed from crank and had a baby. I was in an altered mental state and didn't understand what I was doing. My attorney says the document signing away my parental rights will never hold up in court because I lacked the legal capacity to sign the document because I wasn't in my right mind."
"You haven't gotten any smarter. An attorney is like a whore. You pay them money and they'll tell you what you want to hear. You knew what the hell you were doing. I tried to get you to reconsider it but you insisted you knew what you were doing."
"I'm going to get to know my son," Wendy said raising her voice. "I don't care what you say. I'm going to get regular visitation."
"You thought if you came to see me first, I'd smooth the way with Jax. I won't. He may have given you a good-bye screw, but that's all it was. He sees you as what you are a woman who chose drugs over the health of his son and almost killed him. He despises you."
"We'll see about that," Wendy spat out the words.
"Sure. There's also something else you can congratulate me on—Jax and I got married."
Wendy should have looked at least a little surprised at the news. Tara suspected that Wendy's timing wasn't accidental. That bitch Gemma contacted Wendy hoping to use her to block their exit from Charming. That was typical Gemma. She wouldn't let them leave without a fight.
"Good luck with that," Wendy said sarcastically. "Your marriage will never work."
"My marriage is different from yours because Jax loves me. He never loved you. I'm also not a crank addict. And we're getting out of Charming."
Wendy flinched when Tara told her that Jax had never loved her, but it wasn't a surprise to her. Jax never lied to Wendy and told her he loved her. It just hurt for her to hear the truth, but if Wendy had any fantasies about getting back with Jax, Tara wanted to put a stop to that immediately.
Wendy should have shown at least some shock at the news that they were leaving Charming. That confirmed to Tara that Gemma had her hand in Wendy's visit.
"You aren't going anywhere," Wendy said. "I'm going to get my rights back."
"We'll see what Jax has to say about that," Tara said very quietly.
Her tone of voice sent chills up Wendy's spine. While he'd had never abused her when they were together, she knew that Jax could be utterly ruthless when it was required.
Wendy feared fighting to keep Abel in Charming could end with her in a grave in Chigger Woods.
