Chapter 19: Kim Tells Her Side of the Story

Angel Grove Police Department, Angel Grove

January 10, 1997

4 pm

Kim was sitting alongside Tommy and his mother at the police station. After talking with Tommy and his parents about giving a statement to the police, Kim had decided to face whatever was coming at her head on and give a statement, as well as identify her attackers.

Detective Moore came out then.

"Hello, Tommy, this must be your girlfriend, Kimberly. I'm Detective Moore, the detective on your case, nice to meet you," Detective Moore said, shaking Kim's hand.

"Nice to meet you too," Kim said, smiling a little smile.

"Let's go back to a room, and we'll talk," Detective Moore said as he, Kim, Tommy, and Jan went to a room in the back.

Once they were all seated in the room, Detective Moore began.

"First of all, Kimberly, I want to say how sorry I am that you had to go through such an awful ordeal. Today I just want to get your side of the story, and if you need to take a break we'll stop, okay?"

"Okay," Kim said.

"Okay, let's start when Tommy dropped you off at the front door of your house."

"Sure. I went to put the key in the door, and I found it to be unlocked. I thought my friend, Aisha, was there an hour earlier than I expected her, so I shrugged it off."

"Now, you entered the house. What happened once you got in the front door?"

"A black, shadowy figure grabbed me from behind, and tried to take my son's car seat from me. I managed to push them off me. Then they tried to grab his car seat again. That's when I tried to grab the car seat back from them. Then they got out a knife, and when I lunged forward, that's when they…they…" Kim said but then stopped.

"Take your time, Kimberly," Jan said as Kim gulped and started again.

"That's when they stabbed me and I crumpled to the ground, holding my chest. They then forced me to ease my grip on the car seat and they took off with my son, and I heard a car peeling off," Kim said closing her eyes.

"Did you notice anything outside before you entered the house?"

"I saw a silver car pulling into the parking lot, but that was it," Kim said.

"Okay, thank you for talking with me today. Now I'm going to show you a couple of mugshots and I want you to look at them closely and try to confirm who those people in the mugshots are, okay?"

"Okay," Kim said as Detective Moore showed her Kat's mugshot. When Kim looked at the mugshot, she froze. She was looking into the eyes of her attacker.

"No, it can't be…Katherine was the one who attacked me?" Kim asked.

"She was identified as lurking around your house 15 minutes before you got home by your neighbors."

"Show me the other mugshot, please," Kim said as Detective Moore showed her Tanya's mugshot.

"That's the driver of the silver car, but she was wearing sunglasses," Kim said.

"Thank you for identifying these mugshots, this will help in the case against them. I will be in touch. You did great, Kim," Detective Moore said.

"What will happen to them?" Kim asked.

"They're being arraigned next week, in which the charges will be read, then once we present the evidence against them the judge will decide if there's enough evidence to warrant a trial. We really don't want that to happen, we would just be happy with a plea bargain, but that's up to the prosecution and the district attorney."

"I would prefer the latter. I just want to move on with my life and watch my son grow up," Kim said.

"Yes, we all want that to happen. Like I said, we'll be in touch," Detective Moore said as Kim, Tommy, and Jan got up, shook the detective's hand, and left the station.

James and Jan Oliver's House, Angel Grove

7 pm

Kim was sitting on the couch in the living room sipping her drink while Jan gave Luca a bath. Tommy came in then and sat down next to her.

"Hey, Kim. What're you doing?" Tommy asked her.

"Oh…hey, Tommy. Sorry I didn't notice you come in," Kim said.

"You seem worried. What's on your mind?"

"I don't know. I just don't want the case to go to trial. What if it does? What if I must testify in court. I'm not ready to face Kat and Tanya yet."

"Kim, it'll be months before a trial starts, so you don't have to face them just yet."

"Months? I can't wait months! I just want to move on with my life!"

"And you will. Maybe they'll agree to a plea deal."

"I hope they do. Now I guess it's in the hands of the district attorney."

"Yeah. Now we must wait," Tommy said holding Kim close to him and rubbing her back.
