Ch19 - Lost and Found pt4

We have been sitting in the waiting area of the airport for a few minutes, although as time passed by Oliver's grip on Kyles letter became more noticeable.

I placed my hand on his arm, he looked up; he smiled at me, however it didn't reach his eyes the way it normally would. I had to find out what was bothering him. I then spoke.

"Oliver, you're holding onto that letter like your life depends on it; is something wrong?"

He gazed at me, I could tell he was holding something back. He smiled again, this time it reached his eyes. He spoke.

"It's hard to explain, as you know my parents divorced when I was 14; and I know it's slightly different, however I was in a similar position to Kyle. I waited for my mother to come back, and she never did. I know Kyle is waiting to find his mother, and I want to help him find her because, I never had the chance to speak to my mother, and ask her any questions. I want to give Kyle every opportunity possible to make up for lost time"

I smiled, I know it's difficult for Oliver to talk about his mom; it can be a shock to the system to find out the man you thought was your father isn't actually your father, and then finding out the man who is your father was your mother's lover and that he had passed away. Well that would confuse just about anybody.

"Oliver, we will offer our services to Kyle; that's all we can do. I know this must have caused some feelings to resurface for you. I'm sorry that this has happened, but we are doing something for Kyle and maybe even Charlotte if we find her. We will give Kyle the opportunity to connect with Charlotte, I promise I won't stop until I find her"

He reached for my hand that was resting on his arm. He took in his, we made light conversation. We then heard a voice.

We looked up, the woman spoke.

"Hi, I'm Sarah; if you will come with me I'll take you to one of our offices so you can speak to Kyle privately"

I nodded. I smiled.

"I'm Shane, and this is Oliver O'Toole; we spoke on the phone earlier. Thank you for doing this, we really appreciate it"

She smiled and then she asked us to follow her, Sarah then took us to a room and she opened the door. We stepped inside, I thanked her again. Once the door closed, Oliver and I sat down facing Kyle.

"Hi Kyle, I'm Shane McInerney and this is Oliver O'Toole; we are from the dead letter office. First off thank you for agreeing to meet us, I'm sure you're wondering why we are here?"

He looked at us, and he smiled slightly.

"It's not every day that you're asked to meet people from the post office, it can catch you off guard; and yes I'm slightly curious as to why I'm getting a visit from you both. So what's going on?"

I looked at him, I could feel my heart race. Here goes nothing.

"I'm sorry to tell you that we have your letter; the one that you wrote to Charlotte Mason. We had to read it to determine who it was from. We didn't read the whole letter, we just read enough so that we could make a start in finding you. We had to do a lot of research to find you, and we are in the process of finding Charlotte. Could you tell us why you wanted to reach out to her?"

He looked at us, I could tell he was shocked; he sat there in silence. I looked at him, I felt my heart break. He spoke again.

"When I found out at 18 that I was adopted, I asked my adoptive parents a lot of questions; the first thing I asked was who was my birth mother and then I asked why she gave me up for adoption in the first place and finally I asked if they had an address for her. They told me that they didn't have that information and I would have to find out myself. It took me a long time to get the information that I needed"

I looked at him and I spoke again.

"I'm sure it took a lot of time to find out where she lived, and again I'm so sorry that your letter ended up coming our way. One thing we figured out was the address you sent the letter to, well the reason that it never got to her is because her family no longer live there. So the letter was sent back to us as undelivered, and it was placed in a box which was then shipped to us at the DLO"

Oliver looked at me and he smiled, he then looked at Kyle and he spoke.

"Mr Davidson, if you want we will do our best to find Charlotte; I'm sure that you have a lot of questions that need answered. However if you wish, we will leave finding your biological mother to you"

Kyle looked at us, he smiled slightly.

"Uh... Thank you, I guess I do have a lot of questions; I mean I wrote this a few years ago, and when I didn't hear back I assumed that she didn't want to meet me. I guess it was because she never got the letter, could you try and find her? I mean if you have the time, I understand if you are busy and you can't find her"

I smiled reassuringly, I looked at Kyle again. I then spoke.

"I promise that we will try our best, is there some way to contact you if we do find Charlotte?"

He nodded. He gave us his contact information, I typed it into my phone; Kyle then stood up, we stood up too.

"I have to get back to work, but thank you for finding me and giving me the letter. If you find her I'll be forever grateful, but if you can't thank you in advance for trying"

I smiled, and Oliver shook his hand. Oliver spoke again.

"You're welcome, we are just glad that the letter is back in the hands of its sender. Thank you for your time Mr Davidson, if we find anything we will contact you immediately"

He nodded and thanked us again, he then went back to work; Oliver and I then made our way out of the airport and back to the DLO. We were determined to find Charlotte and reunite her with the son that she had to part with all those years ago.

Once we arrived back at the DLO, I got straight to work on finding Charlotte. Oliver went over and sat down behind his desk.

I went back over the previous searches I had entered into my search program. I wrote down all the information I gathered.

We had her name, we knew that she had a son who she gave up for adoption, we know she was 17 when she gave birth, we also her family didn't support her during her pregnancy, and finally we know that she gave birth at Denver Mercy Hospital.

We spent the rest of the day searching for Charlotte, I sighed slightly frustrated. Oliver looked up from his desk.

"My love, is everything alright?"

I looked at him, and I smiled slightly.

"I guess, but I'm getting nowhere with this search for Charlotte; do you think we will ever find her?"

Oliver stood up and made his way over to my desk, I could tell he was contemplating something. The last time he had that look on his face, he was contemplating what to do about us. I looked at him again, and then he spoke.

"My love, why don't we finish up for today; and tomorrow we can start fresh, and if it's ok with you maybe we can ask Dale for help. She has resources at hand that could help our investigation"

I nodded, I knew that Oliver was right; I mean Dale has helped us a few times, and if I'm being honest she would be a great help in finding Charlotte.

"You're right, we've had a long day; and I think asking Dale to help would be a good idea, and tomorrow our heads will be clear enough to continue the search"

We cleared up, lifted our things and headed to my place for dinner, we ordered from our favourite take out place; we made light conversation, while we waited for it to arrive.

We spent the evening talking, laughing, and relaxing on the porch swing. It was the perfect way to end a somewhat perfect day.
