Chapter 33: Yumiko Miura #2
Yumiko Miura had done it. She had finally done it, what she had been thinking about doing since the very beginning. She had broken up with Hayato Hayama. He hadn't even tried to fight for their relationship. He had just smiled in that easy going way of his, full of charm and charisma and then he had the nerve to say something stupid and corny, like he was the one who was making a sacrifice for her happiness.
It pissed her off like really pissed her off. She would have smacked him too but Yumiko decided not to get physical at the last moment. She couldn't be bothered laying her fingers on him. Now that she thought about it there was something really slimy about him.
Why couldn't she have figured this out when she first had feelings for him and then confessed to him and started going out. It would have saved her a whole lot of trouble. But like they said, hindsight is a bitch. Well no worries. She was a strong, independent woman. She didn't need no man in her life. In fact, weren't men the ones who spent their lives mostly remaining single. She could do it if she really wanted to. She could be single and miserable just like –
"I heard Hayama broke up with you."
Speak of the devil. It was him. Hachiman Hikigaya. Hikio. And wouldn't you know it; he was spouting nonsense like always. Yumiko Miura wouldn't have any of that.
"Excuse me, what the hell did you just say!?"
Hikio had the presence of mind to think about it for a second. "Um, you broke up with Hayama."
Yumiko Miura nodded her head. Hmm. Now that seems right. But Hikio had just said the opposite a second before. Now knowing him, he thought that to be true, the right kind of information. He never mixed up his sentences not even in the face of death. He often said the last thing he should have said at a particular moment, but he was never factually wrong about anything.
Last time he said, she had amazing breasts. Not in that way mind you, but a bit more crudely with less finesse, but what he said was true. And even if she punched him twice and kicked him in the gut once for good measure out of sheer embarrassment – he called it, being a tsundere, what a dweeb – he was still right.
Yumiko Miura did have the biggest breasts on campus and she was proud of it.
But no, she would rather dwell on it later. For the moment she had more important matters to attend to. Like how Hikio got this false information.
"Listen, Hikio, I broke up with Hayama." Miura said.
"I just said that." Hikio repeated.
"Yes, but you said something else before."
"Did I?"
"Yes you did!"
He looked away out of fear. "Nope! Can't remember it. Oh well, what can you do? I'm such an airhead." He playfully punched himself in the head and winked with his tongue out. "Tehee~"
"Gross."
"What!? Komachi does this all the time. It's adorable." He protested.
"You are not your little sister Hikio."
"But I am a Hikigaya. The secret art of going 'tehee' has been passed down the Hikigaya family for generations!"
"What?" Miura was confused.
Hikio sighed. "Nothing. Look, I'm sorry. I believed some rumours going around campus. People were saying…" He paused and cocked his head to the side while rubbing his chin in a thoughtful expression. Then he snapped his fingers in a sudden moment of realization.
"Let's try this again, shall we? People were saying stuff about how Hayama and Miura are no longer together because they mutually decided to call it quits." He wiggled his eyebrows creepily. "That works right? Who am I kidding, of course it works. There is nothing more workable in this universe than compromise. You are happy, I'm happy, Hayama's happy and I don't like to say it, but even the gossip mongers are happy."
Yumiko Miura sighed. She couldn't believe he had such limited knowledge about how gossip worked. But then again his social skills were horribly lacking in certain respect. There was also the possibility that he was playing dumb to save himself from pain and punishment at her hand. She had just beat him silly the other day. Two days in a row would be pushing it. He might actually die.
Well no one would miss him. Even he would agree to that, though she doubted whether he would be more agreeable to dying at her hands, just because she was having a bad day and her temper was at an all time high. Talking to him didn't help. It never helped.
"Look Hikio, you know better than everyone how rumours work." Yumiko Miura really didn't want to do this. "Need I remind you what happened when you asked Orimoto out on a date back in our first year?"
Hachiman Hikigaya winced. He rubbed his forehead as if nursing a headache. Thinking about it even today made him feel miserable. Those days were in the past. It's pathetic. It wasn't days. It was a day. Just a day. But it was enough to make him feel the worse form of hurt. Too bad he couldn't rub his chest to comfort his broken heart. It would look weird.
"What happened between Orimoto and I was unfortunate." Hikio said. "However, I will say this. It has nothing to do with what happened between you and Hayama. So don't even make that comparison."
Yumiko wouldn't let him have it. "How is it any different?"
Hikio glared at her. Those rotten dead fish eyes caught her in a snare. If she was the python, he was the mongoose. It suddenly looked like a battle of equals. No, it looked like he had the higher ground. Dammit, she didn't come here to lose.
"Orimoto and I went to the same middle school. I had feelings for her since back then. But she was a friend and I couldn't take the chance to ruin whatever relationship we had. I was happy being with her in whatever capacity she wanted." Hachiman sighed. "Then there was high school. We didn't have any contact. We just lost touch, drifted out. I thought she never saw me as anyone special." He gave a rueful smile. "But then I found out she was here. At Neo Tokyo University! We went to the same campus. We were together again. Like an idiot, I thought it was a sign from heaven, an act of God, Fate pulling our strings together, itself." He gave out a dry chuckle. "We got back in touch. We again became friends. She was fun to be around. She liked me for me. I couldn't have asked for more. But I did. I wanted more." He looked at her with heavy eyes. "You know what happened next."
"You asked her out." Yumiko said solemnly. "She rejected you."
Hikio shook his head. "I wished she did that. But you see like me, she also cherished our friendship. She didn't want to damage it. She didn't want to end it." He let out a long suffering sigh. "And so, when I confessed to her she said 'yes'. Even though she didn't have those kinds of feelings for me, even though she didn't see me like that, she said 'yes.' God, why did she have to say 'yes'!" He spoke loudly all of a sudden surprising her. Then his voice fell down to a whisper. "We went out for an entire week. Those were the best seven days of my life. I told her I loved her. She told me she love me. She didn't lie. She told me that when the week was over. She did love me, but not in the way I loved her." He met her eyes and for once it didn't remind her of those of a rotten, dead fish. It was sad, disheartening, nothing like his. Miura wanted to comfort him, but she stayed her ground. Hikio was strong. He would suffer through to the end and end his tale. "We shared a kiss. My first and last kiss and then said goodbye."
Yumiko Miura felt sad. "Hikio, that's, that's." A couple of tears stung her eyes. "I don't know what to say." She started to weep for him. It was really silly of her. She was a grown ass woman and this hadn't happened to her. But she felt sorry for him. He had to go through this and he remained strong. He was even being strong now when he was telling her his story, his very personal and private story.
"Hey, stop crying. I should be the one crying at the end of this tragic tale." He came closer, cradled both her cheeks with his palm and using his thumbs he wiped away her tears. "Really Miura, sometimes I forget that you are a bit of a crybaby."
Yumiko Miura hiccupped. "A-Am not."
"Okay fine, you are not." Hikio patted her in the forehead a couple of times. It felt really nice when he did that. Of course Miura said nothing because then he would say some idiotic things like how this is what he did to comfort his crying little sister and it would ruin the entire moment. Really, get a clue, Hikio, she thought.
"Feeling better?" He asked.
"Shouldn't I be the one asking you that?" Miura countered.
"Well, I'm not the one who got dumped today."
"For the last time, it was me who dumped him!"
Hikio really had a way of ruining the moment. He had no idea how to deal with a solemn and heartfelt situation. Here he was trying to comfort her, while also simultaneously trying to annoy her to no end. Really, what was up with that, she thought. He couldn't be that much of an idiot when it came to women.
Could he?
"I hope you didn't dump him because I said you had amazing breasts, Miura."
Well, she got her answer.
Hachiman Hikigaya was the biggest idiot in the entire campus. And in a few minutes he would be the deadest idiot in the entire campus too. Sucks to be you, Hikio, she thought with an evil smile forming on her face.
A/N: Almost everyone voted for Yumiko Miura. Guess she is still really popular. It shows. I had fun writing her. Maybe I will make a separate fic about her someday. No promises, though.
