The fight in Wakanda was hard, it seemed harder than anything before and they couldn't quite understand why. But the fight the avengers faced with Thanos was harder, and they lost. Before they even had a chance to do anything about it, Thanos was too powerful. Nat was pinned to the ground whilst she watched her friends suffer from his wrath too...but then there was Steve, the love of her life, he would never give up so when they lost it would really hit him hard. She watched and as her boyfriend fought Thanos single handedly, trying to break free from the hold Thanos had on her to help him out, she couldn't, he was too strong. Then, in that moment the ground shook, Thanos had punched Steve so hard that the ground had shook and here he was still trying to get back up...a true soldier. Everything happened all too quick for any of them to even get their heads around. A sudden flash and explosion and Thanos was gone. "Steve?" Bucky called out to his friend as his body began to fade away. "Bucky!" Steve called out in pain, dropping to his knees and running his hand over the ashes of his friend. When everyone around them began to disappear he began to realise what this meant, Nat came running over to them and Steve couldn't help but be relieved that she hadn't been a victim of Thanos's snap, and vice versa. She held her stomach as she wanted to be sick, they lost, they lost everyone...and then her mind went back to James, what if James had been killed? It broke her heart.

After the devastating war, the remaining avengers headed back to the shield quarters to mourn, to figure out their next steps but Nat and Steve, they couldn't...they had to know. Promising the other they'd be back they got on a jet and flew straight to Clint's farmhouse. "Steve...if he's gone I…" She couldn't even finish her sentence without her lip quivering. Steve sighed too, he couldn't lie to her, try to make her feel better that James was still alive because the truth was..that there was a 50% chance that he wasn't and it killed him. He felt like he had failed.

Clint had sat back and watched his whole family disappear right before his eyes, including James, he felt like he had failed his best friend. He couldn't understand why he was the only one, out of his entire family, why it was him that was still standing here. Hearing the ship he swallowed hard and wiped his eyes, knowing it was Steve and Nat coming for their son, a son that he had lost. Walking outside of his door he felt so numb, seeing Nat walking towards him, worry on her face, hope, heartbreak. He didn't have to say anything, he just swallowed hard and looked down unable to face her, "Clint?" Nat asked helplessly, "Clint…" She said again with her eyes filling with tears, Steve watched from afar, he wasn't even sure he'd be able to make it to the doorstep without breaking down. Clint finally lifted his head to look at her, both their cheeks became soaked with tears, "I'm so sorry Nat...I failed you…" he told her with a broken voice, and it was true...well at least that was how he felt. Nat's heart shattered, this was the worst pain, dropping to her knees Clint caught her in his arms and held her close, "I tried...I tried to hold onto them, all of them but...I couldn't." He said as he broke down in her arms, she in his. Steve swallowed hard and couldn't bear the thought of what he was seeing, going back onto the jet he wiped his own tears before yelling out in frustration and hitting the wall. "I should check on him…" Nat said swallowing hard, trying to keep it together herself. "Please just go...I can't stand looking at you knowing what I've done, knowing that I failed you." He said the lump in his throat, he had lost everyone too. "You haven't failed us...we failed you, we failed all of you." She admitted, they had lost the fight, not him. "Please...just go…" Clint said dropping his head once more, he couldn't, he couldn't see his best friend and be able to look at her without feeling the guilt of losing her son. Nat swallowed hard and wiped her tears before nodding, and going back to the ship. Seeing Steve on the floor, his head in his hands, crying...Captain never cried, not like this. She knew right now she had to be strong, despite how hard it was. Sinking in between his legs she moved her hand to his cheek and rested her forehead against his, the tears falling down both of their faces, "I failed him...I failed you." he mumbled out through his tears, he would blame himself, they all would. "This is not your fault…" She choked out, "Our son is gone! He's gone Nat! Because I couldn't stop him...I couldn't stop Thanos, he was too strong." He mumbled out so heartbroken, this broke Nat's heart too. Trying to comfort him the best way she could without hurting herself even more, "We couldn't stop him...we did this together." She told him, pulling him close.

This was the hardest thing any of them had ever had to go through and it was only going to get worse.
