"Yea we made it Dad" Lyndy says on the phone as David opens the door for her as she walks into the diner as Joanna drops the rag where she has been wiping down the counter "Okay I'll talk to you soon, I love you" she finishes as she hangs up the phone

"Hello" Joanna says as she walks over to them as she gives Lyndy a hug

"Hi Joanna" Lyndy says as she gives her a hug back "Sorry we're late" she says as they pull out of the hug "Someone thought he knew a shortcut" she says as she looks at David "Even though we've been here way more times than he has"

"And you must be the shortcut maker" Joanna says as she turns to look at David

"Yea I'm David" David says as he shakes her hand "It's nice to meet you ma'am" he says as Joanna shakes his hand

"Well I cooked you two something up" Joanna says smiling at them "If you want to come and sit down"

"Come on" Lyndy says as she leads David over to the bar "She makes some of the best food"

"Can't wait" David says as he follows her over to the bar as they sit down as the door opens as a little girl comes walking in as Joanna comes back out of the kitchen "Hey Emily"

"Hi" The little girl says as she walks behind the counter

"Did you have fun with Sam?" Joanna says as she tries to make small talk with Emily

"It was fine" Emily says as she swings the door as she walks into the back of the diner

"I don't know how to get through to that girl" Joanna says under her breath turning back toward Lyndy and David as they look at her

"Who was that?" Lyndy says from where she has been overhearing the conversation

"That is Emily" Joanna says as she continues to look at her "You remember when we had that avalanche in the valley a few months ago"

"Yea I remember" Lyndy says as she looks at her "Some of the horses involved in it" she says continuing "Dad, GG, Grandpa and I came here to help"

"Well" Joanna says looking back toward the kitchen before continuing "The horses were not the only thing involved in it" she says as Lyndy continues to look at her "Emily and her parents had a house in the valley"

"I didn't know anyone could build in that valley" Lyndy says as she continues to look at Joanna "It seems like it would be too dangerous, too much of a risk"

"And it is" Joanna says as she looks at her "And we tried to talk them out of it when they began the build, but they loved the property and didn't want to listen to our warnings"

"So when the avalanche happened?" David says as he looks at Joanna as Lyndy turns to look at him

"When the avalanche happened Emily was at a friends house for the night" Joanna says as she continues to look at them "But her parents were at home" she says continuing "The house was crushed, and her parent's died in it" she says as Lyndy and David continue to look at her "We could find any other relatives for her and I have plenty of space at the house now that Sam is married and him and Laurie are in their own place, so I took her in"

"So what seems to be the problem?" Lyndy says as she looks at her as Joanna leans against the counter

"The problem is even though I lost my parents" Joanna says as she looks at them "My mom was sick for a long time before she passed away" she says continuing "And dad was getting older and having a lot of health problems himself before he passed away" she says as they continue to look at her "My point is, with my parents it wasn't just out of the blue when they passed away"

"But with her parents it was sudden and unexpected" Lyndy says as she looks at her "Yea I know a little something about that" she says as she turns to look at David

Later that night Lyndy and David are sitting on the couch at the house "You know" Lyndy says as David looks over at her "When we lost mom, I remember how hard it was on not just dad but also me" she says as David continues to look at her "My mom being there playing with me out in the fields the day before and suddenly she just wasn't there anymore" she says continuing "But I can't imagine how hard it is on Emily, losing both of her parents in an instant" she finishes as she gives him a look

"I know that look" David says as he looks at Lyndy "Don't worry we'll figure it out" he says as he gives her a kiss on the head "But I'm beat so I think I'm going to go on to my room and go to sleep"

"Okay" Lyndy says as she gives him a kiss before he walks back down the hallway

"Just don't stay up too late okay" David says as he looks back at her

"I'm not" Lyndy says as she continues to curl on the couch "I just want to stay like this for a little longer"

"Alright, I'll see you in the morning" David says as he turns around out of Lyndy's sight stopping as he pulls a ring box out of his jean pocket opening it up revealing the ring inside as he takes a breath

Meanwhile Ty is in the kitchen at the ranch house pouring some juice as his cell phone starts to go off on the table

"Hello" Ty says as he runs over as he grabs it picking it up

"Hey Dad" Lyndy says on the other end of the phone

"Sweetie it's late" Ty says as he sits down at the table as he takes a sip of his juice "I just walked in the door from the clinic, is everything okay?"

"Yea I think" Lyndy says as she leans into the couch "I guess I'm just realizing how lucky I am to still have you here" she says continuing "There's this girl Emily here, the avalanche they had a few months ago" she says as she looks around the room "Her parent's had a house in the valley, it was crushed and well they were killed" she says as Ty puts down his juice on the other end listening closer to her "And I guess I know how it feels to lose one parent suddenly, but I can't even imagine how it is to lose both parents" she says finishing "And Joanna has taken her in but she hasn't been able to get her to open up, I'm thinking maybe I should talk to her"

"Sweetheart I wish you had never had to lose your mom" Ty says as he gets up from the table walking into the living room toward his room "But you did" he says continuing "And if anyone can get this girl to open up it's you" he says grabbing his night clothes "So how's everything else going, anything else happened"

"Um no" Lyndy says as she continues to talk "What else would be going on?"

"Nothing" Ty says walking toward the door "Just making sure that was the only thing you needed to talk about"

"Okay" Lyndy says on the other end "Well I'll see you in a couple of days" she says continuing "I love you dad" she says before hanging up the phone as she fiddles with it in her hands continuing to look at the fireplace

The next day Lyndy walks into Joanna's house as she sits her bag down "Joanna"

"In here" Joanna yells as from the living room as Lyndy comes walking into the living room "Where's David?"

"I thought this might be better to do on my own" Lyndy says as she looks at him "And plus he wanted to take a look around the area"

"Okay we'll I told her you were coming" Joanna says as she looks at her "And I did tell her about your mom" she says as she looks at Lyndy "I hope you can help"

"I'm going to try" Lyndy says as she smiles back at her

A little while later Lyndy and Emily are riding down along the field as Emily turns to look at Lyndy "Joanna told me about your mom"

"Yea it was tough" Lyndy says turning to look at her "For a long time" she says continuing "Joanna told me about your parents" she says as Emily looks at her "She does want to help you, you know that right"

"I know" Emily says as Lyndy continues to look at her "And she seems really nice and all, it's just she"

"Doesn't understand" Lyndy says as she looks at her "Yea I get it, it was hard on me for a while, even to open up to my dad about how I was feeling about my mom" she says continuing "But it does get easier over time, that emptiness never really goes away but it does get easier" she says continuing to look at Emily "But it does help to talk about what you feeling"

"Would it be okay if I talk to you some more" Emily says as she continues to look at Lyndy "It's nice to talk to someone who understands"

"Of course" Lyndy says smiling looking at her as Emily lets out a small smile as they keep riding along

That afternoon David is standing down by the fence watching Lyndy down in the field with the horses as Joanna comes down "I brought you some tea"

"Thanks Joanna" David says turning as he takes the cup of tea from her "I'm just thinking, especially being here, just how amazing Lyndy is"

"With the horses or with Emily" Joanna says as she looks at him "Because I don't know what magic words she used on Emily but she is beginning to open up more"

"Both" David says as he smiles at Joanna before turning back as he continues to look at Lyndy

Later that night after dark Lyndy and David are walking down "You know this is one of my favorite things about being here" Lyndy says as she turns to look at David "Just looking at the river and thinking about how it is always changing, just like with life" she says continuing as they keep walking along

"I'm so proud of you for how you helped Emily" David says as he turns to look at her

"I didn't know if I would be able to find the words" Lyndy says as she looks at him "But I just spoke from the heart and they just came to me" she finishes saying as they continue as the walk toward a gazebo "Wow I've never noticed this before, it's beautiful" she says as David looks out at the river as she notices "Are you okay?"

"Yea" David says as he turns around to look at her "I'm fine, actually I'm better than fine" he says as he continues to look at her "I was just thinking about what you said about the river being like life that it is always changing" he says continuing "And I'm hoping that this will be a good change" he says as Lyndy gives him a confused look "Lyndy you are the best part of me and you continually amaze me with your generosity, kindness and your patients" he says continuing "And not just with me" he says as Lyndy lets out a smile "But with everyone else around you, and they feel it too" he says as he backs up a little from her "And your my one true love and I don't ever want to go through life without you by my side, you are my better half" he says as Lyndy watches him get down onto one knee "So Lyndy Marion Borden, will you marry me and make me the happiest man on earth?"

"Of course I will" Lyndy says as she smiles at him as David slips the ring on her finger "Yes" she says as he stands up looking at him as they embrace in a hug "I love you so much"
