"Around the fence, we usually go onto the nests and make sure everything is in place." said Philip.
"Nests? You mean like a snipers?" Asked Claire.
"Well yeah. It's not easy to build them, so we make a few and put in advantage points around the area, so that we have full view of the area below." They had built sniper towers around the edge of the area, which gave them a clear view of the woods ahead, and of the floor below.
Philip gave her the run down of the sniper nests, while the rest of the group tried their best to fit in with the others. It was hard to be outside since it was pretty cold, but they managed.
"Everything is in order, because we all did our part," Bella told some of the group members who decided to try to talk to her.
"You're not exaggerating?" Kenzie added, when she learned more about her her mindset about Bella changed to some sort of over protective mother.
"I don't think so. Because of what I have done, alot of these people are still alive and thriving."
"I guess so." Kenzie said under her breath as she walked back to the house she was sharing with everyone else. At the same time she didn't want to be there at all, her and Kyle had survived by being on the road, not by staying put.
Mika was out in the backyard with Lee, having some sort of conversation.
"Is this going to work out? This isn't the first time, you know."
"Yeah. I just wanted a safe place for Clementine, and everyone else too. God knows we need it. But we wouldn't make it out there in this weather." he replied.
"I want that too. We can do this. We give this place a shot, but if anything somehow makes us uneasy, we're heading out that gate. Walkers or not. We've made it this far, we can keep going."
"Okay. That's the plan. Philip asked me to go his office a while ago, I should get going. See what he wants."
"We'll stay put here."
Philips office was built into the remains of a old closet room, which was pretty big. There was a rifle leaning against the window, and some close combat ones on the desk.
"Everything alright?"
"Yeah, just some issues we're pretty sure we can fix. We get our water supply from the river down the road ahead, and it's been coming in real slow. We can spend days without water, but we don't want to have something bad happen to it."
"I'm guessing you want me to go take a look?"
"Well not you, but you can ask anyone else around if they would like to go. You'd be doing all of us a favor regardless."
Lee went back to the house and told everyone about the issue.
"So who's up for it?"
"He didn't tell you where it is, so I'll go." said Shelby.
"I'll join her. Shouldn't be too hard," said Mika.
"I'll go too. Just for backup," added Kyle, who was acting a bit weird. They all started to walk out of the house, as Lee gave Kyle a long stare.
"So the water goes into some sort of purifier and it goes trough the pipe all the way back up," said Shelby, as they walked through the woods towards the river.
"Ever had anything bad in it?" Mika asked.
"It might taste weird, but nothing bad. The thing has some filters which throws out garbage or anything else. But it needs a quick clean sometimes."
They reached the river and the purifier, which Shelby started to move around to fix it. Mika helped her by holding it still while she messed around with it, and Kyle was standing about 10 feet away, keeping guard.
A couple of walkers came by, as Kyle aimed at them, but didn't fire.
"Are you gonna kill them or what?" hissed Shelby.
He gave them a quick look as he grabbed a walker by the shoulder and shoved it towards a tree, causing it to fall to the ground, as they killed the other one. Shelby grabbed a log and rammed in its head meanwhile.
"I don't think those were the only ones around here," said Mika.
"Hm... Maybe then-" The walker that Shelby had rammed in was still alive, as it latched onto Kyle's ankle and took a large bite, revealing part of the bone.
"Holt shit, what now?" Asked Mika. Despite being around for a long time, she had never experienced something like this.
"It'll take too long to get him back to a doctor, we have to do something now!" said Shelby, as she looked around in the tool box next to the water purifier.
"What do you mean?!"
"The infection will spread and kill him if we don't cut it off quick. Chances are he might be able to make it," she said as she reached for a hacksaw.
"No! No!" Kyle exclaimed as he somehow got up and began to limp away into the woods, slowly disappearing from their sight.
"We should tell Josh, he's the head of security, he'll know what to do," Shelby added as they finished with the purifier and quickly made their way back.
The other people that resided looked at them with strange eyes as they ran into one of the houses, looking for Josh.
"It looks like you're in a hurry. What do you need?"
They explained the incident to him.
"Where did he get bit?"
"On the foot. We tried to help him, but he panicked and ran off towards the woods."
He paced around the room, thinking of a answer.
"We can't risk anything for him. Sorry."
"Why not? There might have been a way to help him." suggested Mika. Despite not being around Kyle or his sister for a long time, she always wanted to help anyone part of the group.
"We're low on supplies and manpower as it already it is. You said he was bitten, it's only a matter of time before he turns. Whatever could have been done is too late to do now."
"It's easy for you to say that, but who's going to be the one to tell his sister that? It's not gonna be pretty," she replied.
"You tell her the truth. There's nothing to lie about. Just watch yourself."
The pair walked back to the house, and saw Kenzie there, who almost instantly asked for her brother. Mika told her the news as best as she could, causing her to start to panic and breakdown.
"He.. He was all I had. And now he's gone?" She paced around the room, not knowing what to do.
"I'm going to look for him." she said, as she grabbed some of her stuff.
"And look where? She already told you what happened." said Dalvin, who thought it wasn't a good idea to go out there, especially during the night.
"You don't know what we've been through." She stomped her way out of the house and made her way towards the gates, but was stopped by the guards and forced to go back. She didn't want to believe that her brother was gone, just like that.
She went back into the house, heartbroken as she observed the flurries of snow through the window.
"We should keep a eye on her. She might not be thinking straight, the way she is," Bonnie suggested.
"Yeah. This might be another Lilly situation.." replied Lee, remembering how unstable Lilly was after her dad died.
"A what?"
"Um... Nothing. Let's just make sure she stays safe and doesn't do anything reckless."
"There was nothing we could do. He panicked and ran off deeper into the woods. If he's still alive, he's bleeding out." added Shelby. She had originally had the idea of amputating the foot to stop the infection, but everything happened really fast.
Bonnie had headed towards one of the buildings, which Philip had told her they use it to house any weapons they don't use. Once she entered, she saw several shelves with some weapons, although most of them were empty.
"Not much, huh?" Bella said, coming on through the door behind her.
"It doesn't have to be much. Anything to protect yourself is good."
"Well, it won't be enough soon."
"What do you mean?"
"A lot of the people here haven't been exposed to the dangers out there, like you people have. If that danger comes through those doors, they aren't gonna last long."
"What is there to do?"
Bella reached for a old drawer that was next to her and pulled out a large poster, with maps drawn on it.
"There is supposedly a old military barracks a few miles east of here. While we don't know what is in it, we are sure there has to be supplies in it."
"Why haven't you sent someone to check it out then?"
"For the same reason I said before. We need all the manpower here, but your group gives us a boost. We'll be able to up our defenses if we manage to get in the barracks, and actually find anything."
"Okay.. Who can I take?"
"I'll tell some of ours to go with you, but we'll need some of yours to go. I'll meet you at the gate in 15 minutes." Bella walked out of the warehouse, leaving Bonnie there.
She went back to the house and recruited some members of the group for the trip, consisting of Kate, Lee, Dalvin, Clementine, Zoey and Emile.
They all met Bella at the main gate, who was with some other members of the group as well.
"So do we know what's around the barracks?" Asked Emile.
"Only from what we've been told, but we'll see for ourselves soon." They all got on the truck and drove out towards some side dirt roads for several minutes.
They drove for a while until they reached a gate, which had a warning sign on it.
"This must be it. Stay sharp." They drove down a hill and turned right, ending up in front of the barrack.
"On foot from here." Lee took the lead as they cut a hole in the fence, looking around the yard, which was pretty much empty, no walkers or nothing was visible.
Lee and Clementine headed over towards a small building in the corner and opened it. There were several boxes that had been opened, but most of the contents were still there.
"Looks like most of the stuff is here. Flares, candles, but no weapons."
"Wouldn't flares attract walkers? They're the ones that light up, right?" Asked Clem. While she was experienced in alot of stuff, she lacked knowledge of some things.
"Yeah, but we could use them to draw them away from a area. Let's put these here.." He set them in a box on the side as they went back outside with the rest of the group.
Kate and Bella went towards the building opposite of the one Lee had gone to, and they went in. The rest of them had stayed by the truck and watched guard for a few minutes. Somehow, walkers suddenly started to pour in near Bella and Kate, causing them to lock themselves in.
"Watch it.." they began to fire towards the walkers, but they kept coming in, from inside the barracks, not from outside.
"This is going to hell fast!" said Bonnie as they fired at them.
"The only option they have is if they run deeper into the depot, these fuckers are gonna break through that door anytime!" exclaimed Dalvin, who was thinking of a way to get them out of there.
Clementine saw the pair run deeper into the barracks through the windows. They were eventually overrun as they ran back into the room where they found the flares and climbed the stairs towards the second floor, locking the door.
"At least the lights are still on. Forget these weapons, we just have to get out of here," said Zoey, as she looked at a nearby console to try to find a map of the area.
"I'm guessing they should be on the other side, we should go over there." said Clementine, who was feeling uneasy.
They opened a door, revealing a empty hallway, they quickly ran across to the other side hoping to run into them, they ended up over a platform, overlooking a large open area at the bottom, full of former military, now walkers.
"Shit.. Watch your step," said Emile, who was never a fan of heights either.
Bella and Kate came around the corner, still frightened.
"This isn't working out how we wanted it to, let's just get out of here!" exclaimed Kate, who wasn't willing to risk her life more.
"No, we've been planning and waiting for this moment for days, and we are already here-"
Kate cut Bella off.
"Yeah, but you didn't take into account the damn walkers here that almost got us killed! Now, let's look for a way out.."
Walkers we're knocking on the door from which the group came from, causing them to look for a way out.
"There's a window up there.. If I could get a lift, I can open it and get us out." said Zoey, hoping that it wasn't locked.
"What part of we're not going, don't you understand?! We're getting these weapons now!"
"Fuck off, you can go ahead and look, but we're getting out." said Emile.
Bella grabbed Kate and shoved her against the door with the walkers, one of them reached out and started pulling her hair, while she was vein shoved in.
"Would you all chill the fuck down?! Whatever we end up doing, we need to find a way out." said Dalvin, as the walkers kept trying to get in.
Bella let go of her grip, as Kate shoved her aside and walked away bit.
Zoey managed to pry open the window she had mentioned earlier. She jumped onto the ledge right under it, and looked at Lee.
"Jump, we have a chance right here."
Lee thought about it for a while.
"No, we need to get whatever we can, either for the community or ourselves. Take Clementine, it's too dangerous."
"What? I'm not leaving without you!" She exclaimed.
"You'll be safer with Zoey, I'll meet you out there."
Clementine reached for the bag she was carrying and pulled out a flare she had kept from the box they had found earlier.
"We'll need that, hold onto it." said Bonnie, as she and Emile used their body weight to hold back the walkers on the other side of the door. Clementine jumped out the window along with Zoey, ending up on the roof.
"I don't see any way out, all of you get out here now!" exclaimed Zoey, as she had a wider view of the area from the roof, seeing that they were basically surrounded by walkers around.
"Damnit. Okay, everyone get across. I'll hold them off." Bonnie said, as they all jumped across, some of the walkers began to pour in the hallway. As she jumped towards the roof, a walker grabbed her by the jacket, causing her to hang onto the ledge, just barely.
"Fuck!" Dalvin quickly ran over and pulled her back to her feet. They were all now on the roof, but it didn't feel and look too good.
"Alright, knowing these buildings... There should be some sort of fire escape we can use to get down." said Dalvin, who felt uneasy being on the roof.
"Again? I'm not going back without the stuff we said we were getting!" Bella exclaimed. They all began to argue. Clem saw that she was slowly reaching for her pistol on her hip.
She also observed that the part where Bella was standing on was weak, since it looked like it was slowly peeling away. She felt like she knew what to do, for the good of everyone else.
Clem pulled out her weapon, at that point no one had noticed, and she fired a round at her feet, causing it to collapse under her, so she fell towards the next floor.
"Shit, now what?" Dalvin was pretty smart about noticing things, and he saw what Clem had done, but he knew she didn't like her and the way she was putting the group in danger, so he didn't speak about it.
"We can give her something to grab onto," said Zoey, who began to look for something long that she could support herself with, but a few seconds later, Bella's yells of pain could be heard as she was consumed by the walkers near her.
The 2 men who were part of her group were shocked. They didn't know what to do now.
"I... Um... Don't know what to say. But we should get going. She knew where the stuff was, but didn't tell us. We should get going." said Zoey. They found the fire escape along the side of the building, as they quickly climbed down and got back on the vehicles, and drove back.
As they drove back, there was a sense of defeat among the group. As they got back to the community, which was called The Reserve, because it was based of a native American reserve, Philip waited for them at the entrance.
"How did the run go?" he asked as they all got off. He noticed that Bella wasn't one of them.
"Where's Bella?"
Lee looked at him seriously in the eye, and nodded his head, telling him what happened.
"Damnit. She may have not had the best attitude, but she kept the kids in check. What happened in there, how did it go down?"
Shelby was sitting on a rock besides them, feeling a bit shocked at the news.
"Something woke the walkers. We were in the courtyard, when they poured out of the depot, we were forced inside." said Kate.
"She told us that it was mapped and safe. Guess not." added Emile.
"I'm guessing you didn't find what you were looking for." stated Philip.
"We didn't get far in the depot. It's full of walkers, we had to get onto the damn roof. We're not risking our necks like that anymore," said Dalvin.
"You saw the armory, how empty it was, those weapons aren't going to last forever," said Josh, who had joined the conversation.
"Military depots aren't the only places with weapons. You just gotta look, if you want to survive." replied Dalvin. Everyone broke up from the bubble of conversation. The group entered the house, where Kate instantly threw herself on the couch nearby.
"We heard everything from in here, looks like shit hit the fan out there," said Coach, who saw Kate was still a bit riled up from earlier.
"That woman, Bella, went balls nuts on Kate." said Dalvin, who took apart his rifle to clean it and maintain it while talking.
"What? Why? I thought we were supposed to help out, not be at our throats," added Amanda.
"Simple. We were surrounded by walkers, she had no idea where the weapons were at, Kate was just being logical and wanted to get out, while Bella wanted to go further into the shit." added Lee. He sometimes wished things wouldn't have gone down like that.
"I hate to say this, but is this really the best option for us? I mean, going out on runs is putting those who go at risk." said Mika.
"I think we're better here for now. Especially with this weather, we'd freeze to death out there, if we're gonna do something, let the weather be in our favor," added Mike.
"Just because we had a tough run, doesn't mean the rest are. Let's just give this place a chance, and if there's something up, then we know what to do." Emile added, as Lee and Mika stepped outside towards the porch, and observed everyone else doing their daily routine.
"Where's the new girl at? I hope the loss of her brother isn't getting her too hard."
"While you were gone she tried to leave again, but they didn't let her. Still believes he could still alive, somehow."
" I know she thinks we're the bad guys here. I can feel that she blames us for it." Lee couldn't help but feel the regret, that he couldn't help anyway.
" She does, and we just leave it that. If it wasn't for us, she'd be dead a long time ago, at least some gratitude would be okay. But don't let guilt take over, everyone else in the group looks up to you, and me, sometimes. It's like a full time job, but we've come a long way."
" What about Carter? He's been off since the Wanderers. I'm worried about it." said Lee. He saw Carter and Cass out in the courtyard with other people.
" He's definitely changed. Who knows what they told, or did to him. We've come a long way, and we're just getting started, no going back, only forward." She patted him on the back as she went back in, leaving him on the porch.
