Chapter 33: Sick

Thomas woke up not feeling very well. He was feeling very warm, with a big headache that made him feel dizziness. Despite not wanting to, Thomas gathered strength to stand up from his bed and dragged himself out of his room and through the hallway to the bathroom. Once he got there, he threw up to the toilet and then washed his face at the sink. "I guess I should let mom and dad know I won't be going to school today," Thomas said to himself. Thomas then walked to his parents' room and knocked on the door. "Come in," Chilli said while making the bed. Thomas walked into the room not looking like himself. "Oh honey you don't look so good," Chilli said looking at her son. "What's the matter mate?" Bandit said coming out of their bathroom. "I think I'm sick," Thomas said with a sniff. Bandit then felt his son's head and muzzle. "Oh mate, your burning up," Bandit said taking back his hand.

"Go back to bed, sweetheart, and I'll make you some tea," Chilli said, while fixing their pillows. Thomas nodded before heading back to his room. "Poor kid, the last time I saw him this sick was when he was seven," Bandit said looking at his wife. "Luckily I have a special tea to help with just that," Chilli said before kissing her husband on his muzzle. Thomas went back to his bed and laid down. He moaned and groaned while tossing and turning, he coughed and sneezed a couple times before Chilli came in with the tea. "Here you go honey this should help you," Chilli said as she placed the tea on Thomas's nightstand. "Thanks mom," Thomas said weakly. "Your welcome, sweetheart, call me or your dad if you need anything," Chilli said before kissing Thomas on the top of his head. Thomas weakly smiled as Chilli left her son's room.

Bluey and Bingo woke up and went to the kitchen to eat their breakfast. Bluey found strange that Thomas wasn't there already. "Mum where's Thomas? Did he didn't come back from his running?" Bluey asked, while eating her French toast. "He's sick sweetie, he's going to stay home today," Chilli explained. "I better call the school to warn them," Bandit said, while taking his phones. "And I'll call the airport and tell them I need to stay home," Chilli said, also taking her phone. After learning his brother's condition, Bluey was speechless as she felt tears coming down her muzzle. "What's the matter mate?" Bandit said walking into the kitchen looking at his daughter. "He promised me!" Bluey shouted as she jumped down from her seat and ran to her brother's bedroom. "Promised her?" Bandit asked looking at his wife. "What did he promise her?" Chilli said as she and Bandit followed their daughter to Thomas's room.

Thomas was trying to rest a bit when the door of his room was burst open and Bluey got in, approaching him with tears on her eyes. "Big brother, you're a big liar! You promised me! You broke the promise!" she shouted. "Bluey, what are you talking about…?" Thomas started to ask, before coughing. "You said you wouldn't get sick, you promised me!" Bluey protested. "Little sister, I'm okay, I just have a little fever… and some cough…" Thomas said, proceeding then to sneeze. "And sneezes… Oh, my head! I really need to… take a quick nap…" Thomas said, before placing his head comfortable on his pillow and closing his eyes. "No, I want you to stay awake!" Bluey exclaimed. "Bluey, what are you doing?" Chilli asked her daughter, while approaching. "Your brother needs to rest in order to recover," Chilli said, while kneeling down to her and putting his hands on her shoulders. "But, mum, he promised he wouldn't get sick," Bluey said, causing Chilli to share a look with Bandit who had also arrived.

After taking Bluey out of Thomas' room to let him sleep, she told her parents about the talk she and Thomas had after his birthday party. "Oh, Bluey, you don't have to worry," Chilli said. "The kind of sick Thomas has is not very serious, it's just a little flu, like the one you and Bingo once had," she explained. "Your mum is right, Thomas' mum had a different kind of sick, one that she couldn't recover, but Thomas can recover from this," Bandit told. "Are you sure?" Bluey asked. "But of course, he is a Heeler, after all, and we Heelers are strong, it's not a little flu that will change that," Bandit replied. "But… he said he would never get sick," Bluey told. "He must have told you that so you wouldn't get worried," Chilli said. "Sweetie, dogs get sick and they can get better or not, but most of times they get better and Thomas will get better, all he needs is a little rest, care and love… and he has all that to spare here, with his family," Chilli said.

"He will… get better? You promise?" Bluey asked. "Of course, but, for that to happen, he needs to rest and some peace and quiet," Bandit replied. "And do you know what could make Thomas feel a lot better?" Chilli asked. "That you and Bingo made something for him at school, I know you have Arts and Crafts today," Chilli said, causing Bluey to make a slight smile. "Yes, I will make something awesome for him and I will tell Bingo to do the same," Bluey replied, hurrying to the kitchen. "Nice touch," Bandit told his wife, while giving her a kiss on her cheek. "Well, our boy will need a lot of love, and what better than some presents from his little sisters to make him feel better?" Chilli asked. "You know, I feel bad for leaving you here with Thomas, are you sure you don't want me to stay at home? I can still work from home, after all," Bandit said. "Sorry, Bandit, but this calls for some mum love, no worries I can handle it, go take the girls to school and then go to work, I can handle him," Chilli replied. Despite still a little concerned, Bandit nodded with his head.

After everyone left to go to work and school, Thomas took a nap, all while Chilli did some chores around the house. Later in the day, Chilli checked in on her son, finding him awake. "Hey honey how are you feeling?" Chilli said walking into her son's room. "I'm feeling better actually, what was in the tea?" Thomas asked sitting up. "My mum used to make it when I was sick. It works every time," Chilli said with a smile. "What happened to Bluey this morning? She was saying something but I can't remember what she was saying," Thomas said looking at Chilli. Chilli placed her hand on Thomas's hand and looked at him. "She told me and your dad about your promise at your birthday party" Chilli said. "Oh no…. she must have been so scared… this is all my fault," Thomas said looking down. "Thomas honey, it's not your fault, you were trying to protect her and I get that," Chilli said, placing her hand on Thomas's muzzle. "Your fever is gone so that's good," Chilli said with a smile.

"Mom, I should have come to you or dad about this situation, I shouldn't have sugar coated it, about me not getting sick," Thomas said, still looking away from her. "Honey," Chilli said making Thomas look at her. "You explained the best you could and I'm proud of you for trying," Chilli said with a warm smile. "Dad's probably mad at me," Thomas said looking down. "No! He's not! And he would never be mad at you for trying to protect your sister!" Chilli said in a serious tone. Thomas then broke down, crying as he hugged Chilli. "Shh sweetheart it's okay you know your dad he's not mad," Chilli said as he hugged her son. "Do you want to call him?" Chilli asked. Thomas then broke the hug and looked at his mother. "Won't he get in trouble?" Thomas asked wiping his tears away. "No, Dr Cooper is fine when it comes to family matters," Chilli said with a smile. "Okay," Thomas said with a smile Chilli then got on the phone and called Bandit.

While in his office, Bandit was nervous thinking about his son the whole time during his work. However, he couldn't focus properly, he even started to sweat thinking about Thomas. He couldn't stop imagining him on his bed, feverish and feeling all bad, it just hurt his heart. "I should just go home and see my son," Bandit said, standing up from his desk. Then suddenly Bandit's cell phone rang. "Hello? Chilli how's our son? Does he need to go to the hospital? I'm on my way out!" Bandit said in a hurry. "Bandit sweetheart slow down our son is fine, he's doing much better but I think we would like to talk to you about something that has involved our daughter," Chilli slowly and calmly. "Oh okay, put him on the phone," Bandit said calmly, while sitting down on his chair.

"Hey, dad," Thomas said. "Hey, son, how are you, mate?" Bandit asked. "I'm fine, a little rest and some of mom's tea and I'm almost good," Thomas replied. "Look, dad… I'm sorry for what happened with Bluey, that's all my fault and I know you must be mad at me…" Thomas said. "Mad at you? What are you talking about? I'm not mad at you," Bandit said. "Really?" Thomas asked. "Look, son, maybe you shouldn't have told Bluey you would never get sick, but… I'm proud of you," Bandit said. "Proud of me? Why?" Thomas asked. "Because you did everything you could to protect your sister the best you could and for that I'm proud of you," Bandit said. There was a pause. "Thanks, dad…" Thomas said. "Your welcome, mate, look, I'll try to get home early, why don't you focus now in getting better?" Bandit asked. "Okay, dad, see you later," Thomas said. "See ya, mate," Bandit said, before Chilli got the phone. "Bandit, hey," she said. "Take care of our boy, Chilli," Bandit said. "Don't worry, I will," Chilli said. "Great… don't worry, I'll get the girls, see you later, okay?" Bandit said. "Okay… bye babe," Chilli replied, hanging the phone. Now more relieved, Bandit was able to focus on his work.

Later, after Bandit was able to get out of work, he went to get Bluey and Bingo. After he picked them up at their respective schools, he started heading home. "Dad, is Thomas okay?" Bingo asked. "Yes, he is, I talked to him, while at work," Bandit replied. "He's… okay? Are you sure?" Bluey asked. "Yes, I'm sure," Bandit replied. "And if you don't believe me, you can see him after we get home," he added. "Can he play with us? I want to play with Thomas," Bingo said. "Sorry, squirt, but your brother will have to stay in bed for today… maybe tomorrow when he's recovered," Bandit replied. He then noticed something wrapped in paper. "Hey, Bluey, what's that?" Bandit asked. "It's a gift for Thomas, mum said I should make something for him," Bluey said. Bandit smiled at that. When they got home, Chilli came to greet them. "Hey, there, sweeties," she said to her daughters, while going to hug them. "Mum, can we go see Thomas?" Bingo asked. "Sure, he's in his room, but try not to tire him," Chilli said.

They went to Thomas' room, where he was reading a book. The door opened and the girls saw their big brother. "Thomas!" Bingo shouted, going to him. "Hey there, Bingo," Thomas said, while going for a hug. "Are you okay now?" Bingo asked. "Of course, mom took great care of me, she made me a delicious lunch and I drank her special tea," Thomas said. "I'm happy to hear that," Bingo said. Thomas then turned to Bluey, who was holding her gift, a little away. "Hey, Bluey… I'm sorry if I was not able to keep my promise," Thomas said. "It's not your fault, I now understand that," Bluey said. Thomas noticed what she was holding. "What do you have that?" Thomas asked. "I did this for you, I hope you like it," Bluey replied, extending the gift. Thomas took it and unwrapped it, being caught by surprise when he saw that the gift was a clay statue of his mother. "I made it after seeing her picture many times in your room and I thought… you would love to have something more, it could also get better faster," Bluey said. Seeing that clay statue, Thomas couldn't help but tear up, while smiling. "Thank you, Bluey, I love it," he said to his sister, with them going for a hug, while their parents observed them from the door, smiling.
